I think here, in these three sections, Corbusier takes what he set out in the essay ‘Three Reminders to Architects’ and applies it more precisely and descriptively to existing architecture. ‘The lesson of Rome’ correlates well to ‘Mass’, ‘The illusion of plan’ to ‘Plan’ and ‘Pure creation of the mind’ to ‘Surface’.

A particular quote I like from this essay is: ‘Profile and contour are a pure creation of the mind: they call for the plastic artist.’

I don’t necessarily see all the criticisms of the architecture of Rome that Corbusier sees but I’m interested to hear if anyone in the group agrees or disagrees with him.
