Welcome to Havenfall Buddy Read Discussion thread! This thread officially opens on June 20th and anyone can join at any time. Please keep in mind that spoilers are allowed in this thread but only up to the group's current reading place. Do not spoil the book if you've read further than the group. Any extra days can be used to catch up!

I am very excited! I have to say I already started yesterday ^^

I kept being interrupted while reading this so it took me a while to read the first 3 chapters

This has "new writer" all over it. Only 3 chapters and she mentioned multiple times why the Solarians were closed off.. there's sure something else that was mentioned more than once in that short period of time, but this stood up to me.

I'm a bit confused about the inn. Is it open to all worlds all year along or just that summer period? And somewhere it says that otherworld people (?) can't survive long on Earth but only in the inn.. So why did she go with Brakken, a Fiorden, to a bar? If I understood correctly the inn is not that close to the town or whatever it is, and the bar was in the town or on the outskirts

Idk why, but the book gives me such huge nostalgia. It reminds me off fantasy stories I read as a kid and that makes me happy.


I thought that the inn was open all the year around, but the MC can only help out in summer bc of school. I understood that humans cannot survive in other worlds. I am not sure about the otherworlds on Earth tho.

Soooo.

As I read I can finally confirm: Everyone can travel into every world, but only for a few weeks or they get sick and die after. Except Solarians bc they are shapeshifter and can shift into any race so they survive in the other worlds.

I hope the book makes more sense now to you!

I haven't read yesterday's or today's chapters, I'll try to catch up these days.

CH 4 This is what I was saying when I asked about the otherworldlings leaving Havenfall.

With the exception of Havenfall as a safe zone, Byrnisians and Fiordens can’t travel outside their worlds without deteriorating, and humans can’t visit Fiordenkill or Byrn for more than an hour or so.

So they can't get out of the inn.. so Brakken and Maddie got out of the inn or they drank at the bar in the inn.. which is not how I understood it.
Also, her not listening to Marcus and not only talking and dancing with Brakken, but going somewhere private with him... well I'm assuming it's not going to end well.

CH 5 And then this:
Everything about Haven fascinates him, from the cars to the diner food to the idea of the post office. But the ancient protective magic ends at the edge of town; he can’t go farther."

This is what confuses me.. Like, first Havenfall is a safe zone, but then it's the whole Haven town.

CH 6. Well, isn't she fast to think Brakken took her keys?

How goes the reading? I haven't moved much from chapter chapter 9.

Oh me too! Sorry I did not reply to your chapter updates! I will do so now. Idk my lack of reading this book is not bc I do not enjoy it, because do you know those books that reek like nostalgia? Idk I have so many déjà-vu's while reading this. (Even though I never read a book that was similar to this one)

About Cahpter 5.

I think it is not like the town is a 'safe zone' but they mentioned in the beginning that soldiers are patrolling the borders of Havenfall so no magic leaves the city. So I guess he cannot leave the town, because Brekken is somewhat a magical creature. I get that the wording of this is somewhat confusing, if you do not pay high key attention on the world building all the time.

Chapter 6

Idk, it is totally cliche that she loves Brekken so much and... well she is really not a fast thinker or really drunk/tired because.... yeah.

I thought human soldiers are patrolling the borders.. It doesn't really matter, cuz I'm not really liking it so the attention I'm giving it is not full, or even a normal amount. I'll try to catch up on some chapters latter, but honestly, I would much rather, and will do, go and start Once&Future.

I'm just going to say what I think about The Heiress, these thoughts are after a few pages of chapter 9 (view spoiler)[So, since she could go through the solar storm or whatever it is, and she shouldn't have been able to.. Right now I'm thinking.. is she maybe a Solarian? (hide spoiler)]

So, it's not like I expected to magically like the story or the writing, although I think I'm having more problems with the writing than the actual story, but.. I'm not liking it. And if this wasn't for those wonderful points.. I would've dnf-ed it after the first 30% even though it's a short book. I started skimming it and that's how I'm going to finish the book.

I skim-read it till the end.. well, I was not surprised with the things that happened. Maybe just one (view spoiler)[That Maddie's brother is alive and that he's also Taya's brother. (hide spoiler)]
