Tavia is already at odds with the world, forced to keep her siren identity under wraps in a society that wants to keep her kind under lock and key. Never mind she's also stuck in Portland, Oregon, a city with only a handful of black folk and even fewer of those with magical powers. At least she has her bestie Effie by her side as they tackle high school drama, family secrets, and unrequited crushes.

But everything changes in the aftermath of a siren murder trial that rocks the nation; the girls’ favorite Internet fashion icon reveals she's also a siren, and the news rips through their community. Tensions escalate when Effie starts being haunted by demons from her past, and Tavia accidentally lets out her magical voice during a police stop. No secret seems safe anymore—soon Portland won’t be either.

ch 5 (view spoiler)[ I'm having a hard time distinguishing between the girls. Hopefully as it goes, they'll separate more. I feel bad that Tavia has to hide who she is because she's a siren and her own dad treats her poorly.

ch 10 (view spoiler)[ Okay wow. That girl Tavia tried to ask for help was a bitch. She thinks Tav is jealous because she's dating Prium and couldn't even stop focusing on her phone for one second.

Then Rick was a total douche to Effie and I feel like she should tell him to fuck off and find a new fake bf at the fair. Both of them deserve better people in their lives. Tavia's dad made her feel so shitty about herself she tried to choke herself and could have died! I have so much anger on their behalf (hide spoiler)]

finished (view spoiler)[ I was confused by the ending. Effie is living with her dad or no? I mean, he turned people to stone and didn't seem like a great guy. And Wallace was talking to Tavia at the end, but can either of them still have contact with Effie? Clearly I missed a lot.

Overall I liked the relevance to issues we're having in America, but I thought the plot was slow and the mythical creatures weren't well explained. (hide spoiler)]
