Chris (chrissieml) | 152 comments Nope, never heard of her before. I see my local e-library has a copy of her 5 part 'the Lion of Wales' series - using King Arthur and Modred as background - but the premise doesn't really appeal to me.

For historical murder mysteries, no one will ever better the Cadfael books IMHO.

One of my favorite medieval mysteries is by Priscilla Royal

Beth Stewart | 644 comments Can you judge a book (or series) by the cover?

My short answer: yes. In many cases you can identify whether it is a book/series that will appeal to you.

I agree that one can often tell if a book/series will appeal by the cover. After 70 years of reading, I now read more for pleasure than any other reason. I know what I like, and overly violent covers put me off the book. The new "cartoon" style artwork covers don't appeal to me. I'm looking for British-set books and often the cover art leads me to those books. The cover alone isn't enough to sell me a book, though; I still read the copy that gives an idea of the plot and characters, and a page or two so I can tell if the writer's style appeals to me as well. Covers do help to sell books, even if the effect is subliminal.
