Pru decides that she’s going to have one night of sexual pleasure before her marriage to George because he not only plans to continue his affairs but is characterized as a lousy lover. What did you make of her decision in this Victorian era?

Robin (robinmy) | 2450 comments I assume it was very daring for the era the book is set in. If someone found out about it, she would be ruined and the wedding would probably have been cancelled.

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2973 comments She definitely took a great risk and I think it was a very foolish thing to do.

Laura She obviously didn’t think of the consequences of her actions. Very risqué for that era to go have a one night stand. That whole scene was far fetched to me, but necessary to the story I guess.

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1203 comments Well, in her defense, I imagine Pru was not as worldly wise as she thought she was.

Very risky for an unmarried woman to give up her virginity this way. It was quite common, however, for married women during this era to take lovers. I think Pru was so disillusioned about her pending marriage, feeling duped, that she didn’t care. Part of it might have been her own way of punishing George, too.
