It is suggested in chapter 9 that the Empire has been around for at least 40 years.
Luke and Leia trekking through the caverns reminds me of Indy. I like how chapter 9 ends with the underground metropolis and the species found there.

Halla: "I want nothin' to do with the Rebels. I'm no outlaw."
Leia: "We're not outlaws, either! We're revolutionaries and reformers."
Halla: "Political outlaws, then."
Leia: "The Empire is staffed by outlaws."
Halla plays the role usually played by Han Solo in later novels.
Interestingly Luke never gets a chance to offer his opinion on the matter due to a near accident while driving.

I thought this passage was an interesting look into how Leia's time on the Death Star affected her...
"Leia, why are you so afraid of an Imperial Governor," he asked gently as they walked on. "What could Moff Tarkin have done to you back on the Death Star before Han Solo and I rescued you?"
She turned memory-haunted eyes on him. "Maybe I'll tell you someday, Luke. Not now. I'm not? I haven't forgotten enough. If I told you I might remember too much."
"Don't you think I could take it," he asked tightly.
She hastened to correct him. "Oh not you, Luke, not you. It's me, my own reactions I'm worried about. Whenever I start trying to remember exactly what they did to me that time, I start to come apart."
