Is it Helen Duff who did his others?

message 4: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments I just finished The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. It was pretty unsatisfying, bland, and just not executed well.

Now starting Age of Empyre, and things are looking bleak for the characters here. D:

Yes, and no, and yes.

It is Helen Duff.
She did the UK editions of the Nun trilogy.
But I listened to the US editions, with a different lady.

Elona Starting July with Sourcery, then I'll tackle the book of the month The Cloud Roads.

message 7: by Aaron (new)

Aaron (zalejin) | 248 comments Gonna finish Flashforward, move on with For We Are Many and going to try and take part in this month's book with The Cloud Roads. (Going in blind, not reading the blurb, should be good!)

message 9: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments Read The Son of Neptune and loved it. So much better when Percy's around, and I preferred the two new characters in this one compared to the new characters in the first book.

message 10: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished The Lemurian Stone and started Adventures in Science Fantasy, a collection of Robert E. Howard's, well, science fantasy stories, most notably including his short, Barsoom-influenced novel Almuric.

message 11: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Started Jack the Giant Killer, old school urban fantasy, an early book by Charles de Lint.

message 13: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished Jack, the Giant Killer, read its sequel, Drink Down the Moon in pretty much one sitting (it's short) and started another book I've not read in decades, Roger Zelazny's Doorways in the Sand, newly available in eBook format.

message 14: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished Doorways in the Sand (it was short and fast) and started Byzantium, a massive historical novel by Michael Ennis. This one will take a while.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Joseph wrote: "Finished Doorways in the Sand (it was short and fast)...."

Weird, but fun format, wasn't it? One of my favorites. Loved the characters.

Yep -- definitely on the more experimental end of the Zelazny scale. I know I read it a bunch of times in high school and I think it took me a while back then to wrap my head around what was going on. Even this time (first time I'd read it in decades) there was a certain period of reorientation.

Finished The Emperor's Edge, and Trapped. Both were good. Now onto Magic Bleeds.

message 19: by Janette (new)

Janette | 211 comments Have just finished Mageborn which I really enjoyed. Quite dark and I suspect that the sequel will be even darker. Being mageborn is not a good thing in this series.

Finished Magic Bleeds, I'm really enjoying this series. Especially since my brother lives in Atlanta and I've been there many, many times and I know all the land marks. Now I'm dwelling into Disc World with the book Eric.

message 21: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments I finished A Darker Shade of Magic last night. I really enjoyed it and have jumped immediately into book 2, A Gathering of Shadows.

I finished Eric. What can I say. It's Terry Pratchett and it's great. Now I'm reading Finnikin of the Rock. It's a really great story.

message 23: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished massive historical novel Byzantium and moved on to something more bite-sized: Robert M. Price's sword & sorcery anthology The Mighty Warriors.

I’ve had Finnikin on my list in so long. I read Dragonflight by McCaffrey. I enjoyed it but you can tell it’s from a different time. One of the MCs shakes the other when he’s irritated by her. It reminded me of all the spanking in Wheel of Time.

message 25: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments I haven't read McCaffrey since probably high school or before; I remember liking the original Dragonflight trilogy and reading maybe a few of the next set, but I was young and it was the ... 70s? 80s? and a lot of stuff slid right past me.

(SEE ALSO: My relationship with the Thomas Covenant books.)

message 26: by Tnkw01 (new)

Tnkw01 | 2293 comments Mod
I read some McCaffrey a few years back and I did find it a little dated. Also, I like fantasy dragons a whole lot more then I do sci-fi dragons.

message 28: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments Just finished Age of Empyre. A nice wrap-up for the series.

And I was in the mood to read something a bit shorter, so I've started How to Stop Time.

Finished Finnikin of the Rock. I liked the unexpected plot twist I didn't see coming but overall the story was just ok. Now I on to Soul Music.

Honestly, a lot more than I realized, especially considering that Byzantium took two full weeks; but the rest were relatively short and I think I was spending more time reading vs. other forms of entertainment last month.
