Em*Greedy* (Iniya) (iniya_n) Does that quote ring a bell...?? well, its none other than our very dear Hercule Poirot, who with his simplicity and modesty and the clever use of his grey cells has impressed many of us to the core....

Here we are, me, my buddy and few others, warmed up with lenses and binoculars, ready to explore the various works of Agatha Christie, cases of Hercule poirot, Miss Marple and numerous other such novels which involves detectives and mystery...

We'll start with a christie novel, the plan is to read atleast one a month, no harm if we do more or less, lets make sure that we discuss each before moving onto the next case..

And bottomline.. lets not restrict ourselves to christie, we can also read Holmes or even our childhood fancies Hardy boys or Nancy Drew ;-) ;-) ;-)

message 25: by Shinjini (new)

Shinjini (shinjini14) | 3174 comments I am going to suggest you read the Hercule Poirot series in order. They are individual stories and not really a "series" of sorts but there are a few things you might miss out on if you don't read it in order and as intended by the author. The relationship between Poirot and Hastings develops through the series so you might like this way better.

And even though I have read the Mysterious Affair at Styles I am going to go with that. Just let me know when you start the second book. :D

message 26: by Ahtims (new)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 2936 comments @ Shinjini, this year I had devoted for a chronological Christie (as well as Wodehouse ) journey as I was curious to see the evolution of the author as well as the characters. Hence keeping my fingers crossed for the Mysterious Affair. It would be a reread, but luckily I have a very short memory. :P

message 27: by Srividya (new)

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) I would agree with both of you and suggest the same thing. If we are planning on a Christie journey, with regard to her Poirot books, lets start from the very beginning and move forward.

I think Ini is on leave from today but she should be checking in between. Let's see what she has to say as this is her idea and her baby, so to speak! :)

I had actually planned to do that last year. As usual, I got sidetracked so that didn't work out. If I have some buddies here, I will be dedicated because I really enjoy the writing and even though I have read some out of order, I am going to read them again.

I will probably not read A Mysterious Affair because I remember the story pretty well (I read it in May) but I am so in for Murder on the Links! :D

message 29: by Ahtims (new)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 2936 comments :-) All the best for your Agatha venture

Em*Greedy* (Iniya) (iniya_n) i agree to what u r saying jinny ... so far I've read the books in a very clumsy order.... reading the books in order will be interesting i guess... so shall we start with mysterious affair at styles without any poll??/ agreeing guys???

p.s. I'll take silence fpr 2 days as consent if there's no response...

message 34: by Srividya (new)

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) If it is decided that we are taking the chronological order of reading.. I hereby take the liberty of declaring

The Mysterious Affair at Styles as the BOOK OF THE MONTH in the MYSTERY/CRIME GENRE for the month of FEBRUARY.

Will wait for dissenting arguments, if any, till Tuesday 13th January 2015 but after that this book choice will be taken as final.

Start date for Reading will be 1st February. Given that it is a small book, it shall be a monthly read. Will set up the thread towards the end of this month.

Happy reading! :)

The beauty about Christie is, the crimes are for the most part very simple. There is no untraceable poison from an african snake and what not. Yet the circumstances make the case so complicated.

Em*Greedy* (Iniya) (iniya_n) so true anirudh... simplicity is christie's speciality.... Doyle's is usually complicated.....

message 47: by Sheetal (new)

Sheetal Dash (sheetalsdash) | 6 comments I agree with you.Sometimes the answer to the puzzles were so simple. Like in Murder on the Orient Express the way she built up suspense made the case seem like impossible to solve but in the end the answer was so simple and justified. She was an amazing woman. My fav author.

message 50: by Anirudh (new)

Anirudh Thing with Holmes is, his plots always include stuff ordinary people wont know about. And he focuses in facts a lot. Christie makes fun of it in some of her books. In fact in one book she even created a character who is obsessed with cigarette clues. Poirot challenges him that he will solve the crime sitting in his chair. :D
