Rosa (rowza) | 86 comments Hi everyone!

I'm pretty frugal and hate bringing more "stuff" into my home, so I typically just borrow books from the library unless I love a book enough to spend money on it and let it occupy space on my shelf :) That being said, I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for ebook subscription services they like. When my library doesn't have a certain book (or when they do but I have a deadline to meet and there's a wait list), I usually use my Libro FM audiobook subscription to bridge the gap. I like the idea of getting a credit each month to apply to whatever book my heart desires, rather than receiving a book chosen at random, but I'd like the option of reading the book rather than listening sometimes.

I heard Scribd has something along the lines of what I'm looking for ("like Netflix but for books"). Has anyone personally tried the service and liked it? How broad is their selection? Have you tried a different service and liked that better?

Kayla Tocco (kaylatocco) | 13 comments scribd is okay but I wouldn’t call it a Netflix but for books but they have a free 30 day trial you can do and they send you email reminders before they charge you so if you don’t like it you can cancel anytime. I used to do kindle unlimited which I loved but they don’t have every book. Only reason I stopped the subscription was we had to do some major budget overhauls and even a $10 monthly subscription was on the chopping block, been thinking of resubscribing though- kindle unlimited is more Netflix for books in my mind.

Rosa (rowza) | 86 comments Thanks, Kayla! That's good to know that they send email reminders ahead of time. I, too, had Kindle Unlimited for a time and got rid of it for the same reason you did. My biggest beef with it was that Kindle Unlimited didn't carry bestsellers and recent releases very often, which is what I typically stray away from the library for. Circe and Where the Crawdads Sing both had 10+ week waits when I had to read them for my in-person book club.

I think I may give Scribd a go. I searched for a few titles and it seems they have a decent selection of newer books. And they have a 60 day trial right now which is awesome! Thank you for your insight!

Kayla Tocco (kaylatocco) | 13 comments You’re very welcome! Let me know how you like it- I’m not opposed to trying it out again as it’s been a while since I have it a go. I had the same issues with kindle unlimited- I found it to be good for books I maybe wouldn’t have tried had the bestsellers been available so you can find some hidden gems that way but typically when I’m searching I’m looking for something specific etc.
