I'm gonna read that book soon!

Nerdy Werewolf (nerdywerewolf) | 218 comments Okay, gonna list the few I have enjoyed and why. (Expect to see this happening in most threads...)

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas -This one is full of hype right now, not because it's the best story ever told-because it has good characters that really evolve over time! Very subversive.

Cinder by Marissa Meyer A young-adult take on Cinderella (and other tales later) that puts her in a post-apocalyptic world with moon werewolves and war.

Cinder is a great book! I haven't read A Court of Thorns and Roses, after reading some reviews it just didn't seem like the type of book I want to read.

Nerdy Werewolf (nerdywerewolf) | 218 comments @Ella, It's definitely not for everyone, but she takes from different fairy tales for different books and uses the tropes to shape the characters...and then she lets them breathe. It's really well done, but only if you're in love with the characters presented!

That's good to know, thanks! My main concern is the content, I've heard it's just a bit on the too descriptive side.

Fridey | 283 comments Ella,

A while back, after reading reviews and also something that the author said I decided not to go for it.

lol, I can't help it but if an author has said something that I find off putting, I lose complete interest in reading his or her books.

I'm I just weird anyone else does the same? : /

Yeah I know what you mean!

message 11: by Nerdy Werewolf (new)

Nerdy Werewolf (nerdywerewolf) | 218 comments There's absolutely nothing wrong with that! There is definitely some violence and sexuality in the series, and that's not for everyone all the time!

You are absolutely allowed to decide something's not for you, no matter popular opinion. That's what's so lovely about being human, yes?

:) :)

How we like books is like how we like food or music, we are all so different from one another.

What is it that they say?: One man's trash is another man's treasure. (No, I don't know who they are, lol)

But I like getting recommendations as I want to discover new authors, new books, so keep them coming. :)

message 13: by Nerdy Werewolf (new)

Nerdy Werewolf (nerdywerewolf) | 218 comments Same-sies! I like to revel in differences and encourage them. If I like something someone else doesn't (or vice-versa), it only makes me curious to see their perspective and explore why!

I don't know how. But my goodreads notifications completely skipped over this topic. It sure is fickle lol. I'm honestly not sure how I didn't see it before now haha. All well, better late than never!

Thanks for posting your recommendations Nerdy Werewolf! We're always happy to hear what you think, even if we personally wouldn't enjoy the book. :)

As a wise person recently once said, "SAME." XD

(I mean I might pick it up just to see why my friend liked it so much, but I'm pretty certain I would DNF it if I did.)

@Fridey By the way, most of the time when you say that it's probably just you, there seems to be at least one other person that agrees with you in these chats Lol!

Fridey | 283 comments lol, I'm always surprised when someone does agree or can relate. Normally tend to be the odd one out. :)

Nerdy Werewolf (nerdywerewolf) | 218 comments I'm gonna list all the ones that have been mentioned (by others, above), but not yet linked, first:

Cinderella Is Dead by Kalynn Bayron
Ash by Malinda Lo

Some others I've come across that I'd like to try:

We've discovered a new sub-genre: The Ugly Stepsister's take!
Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister by Gregory Maguire
Stepsister by Jennifer Donnelly
The Ugly Stepsister by Aya Ling

Romantic retellings:
If the Shoe Fits by Julie Murphy
An Offer From a Gentleman by Julia Quinn

YA retellings:
So This is Love by Elizabeth Lim She also wrote Six Crimson Cranes!!!
Cold Hearted by Serena Valentino
Before Midnight - A Retelling of Cinderella by Cameron Dokey
Geekerella by Ashley Poston

I feel better, now.

Awesome, thanks for those! Have you read any of those personally? I think I have Stepsister on my list, but I'm not sure if it's worth reading or not...

Nerdy Werewolf (nerdywerewolf) | 218 comments Nah, these are recs from a bunch of friends who read retellings, too!!

LOL I feel better after recommending my favorites too.

message 25: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (tallyo) | 7 comments I'm a little embarrassed at the number of books on my shelf that are Cinderella retellings...

Some of my favorites that haven't been mentioned:
Cinders: The Untold Story of Cinderella

Traitor's Masque

Cinders, Stars, and Glass Slippers

Cinder & Ella

I read Stepsister last year and enjoyed it! Geekerella is adorable, and I've read it twice. I've also read Before Midnight but didn't really like it- I don't think anything was particularly wrong with it, but I didn't really enjoy the writing style.

Ohh I’ve been meaning to read Cinders, Stars and Glass Slippers. I just haven’t gotten around to it haha. And it’s okay to have a favorite retelling that you favor in your shelf Lauren. My biggest shelf besides Read is literally fairy tale retellings so I can definitely relate haha.

I have that one on my kindle...it's been on the backburner of my mind for a bit. But I just got a series yesterday for a dollar by Melanie Cellier (Hidden Mage) so I might start that I dunno...Ack.

message 28: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (tallyo) | 7 comments Ohhh, I grabbed that series the other day too. I'm sure it'll be really good- I loved the Spoken Mage series.

Melanie Cellier also has The Mystery Princess: A Retelling of Cinderella. I've had that one on my Kindle for a while but haven't gotten around to reading it yet.

Oh Hidden Mage. I'm not really sure what happened, but I really didn't like Melanie Dickerson's writing style in her fantasy world. The whole world was just washed out for me and it was boring for me. But that's just for me and I hope you enjoy it more than I did. :)

You mean Melanie Cellier, right? :)

message 31: by Susan (new)

Susan Chapek | 56 comments One of my favorites is Bound (mashes European and Chinese Cinderella stories).

Cinderella's Dress and Cinderella's Shoes are sweet historical "sequels" to Cinderella.

Letters by Cinderlight: A Tale of Cinderella gives a different setting and back-story.

The Shadow in the Glass mashes Cinderella with the legend of Faust--very inventive, but a little too dark for my taste.

I was NOT a fan of Shadow in the Glass. I thought the concept was wicked intriguing, too! It was just not redemptive enough for me, I think?

The others look great! Thanks for the recommendations!!

You put your finger on it, Nerdy Werewolf. I don't demand a happy-happy ever after, but--well, even Faust grows in understanding and in some versions is literally redeemed.

message 35: by Nerdy Werewolf (new)

Nerdy Werewolf (nerdywerewolf) | 218 comments YES! Exactly.

I need the ending to be common-sense-satisfying, not sunshine and rainbows. If our journey leads absolutely nowhere, how can that possibly be satisfying?? Haha!
