This is a really fascinating and powerful book and I'm looking forward to hearing everyone's thoughts as they read!

I am so happy I'll be able to read it and join the group read this time! My copy is supposed to be in its way!

Yay! It's been so nice that our library is open for pickup, though I realize I read in more formats so my reading choices have never really faltered.

True, if I were open to Kindle I would have had more choices, but as it is I ended up rereading most of the Isabel Allende books I already own and I am glad for that!

It's always good to get different perspectives!

love it when that happens!

I'm with you. Actually, I've gone way more off the deep end (hehe) than your thoughtful, considered review, and after reading half, I just can't with the other half.
I do think it's partly just me though. It was the kind of book I wasn't going to like so I should just have stayed away from it.
I am only up to the 4th chapter but it's not drawing me in. I am not sure to what extent it's because of "withdrawal " from what I just read priviously ( Mexican Gothic), which I loved so much, or if its the style which is kind of stream of consciousness ( or not?). The premise, mermaids descended from pregnant slaves thrown overboard, is brilliant.
For those who finished, feel free to share more specific thoughts in the spoiler thread! I'll head over there and give some of my thoughts. It's been a while since I read it, so they'll be more my impressions than anything specific!

Will be joining over there soon!
It gets much better starting chapter 5 but I will not say why in order not to give away any spoilers!

I finished today and would love to discuss your perspective more in the spoiler thread.
I am struggling as how to rate this book!

I'd be interested in reading your impressions too Emily.
My 4 stars is because of I think it the premise was original and subject matter relevant, but I also struggled with parts.
