The character Toddy MacFarlane mentions he was an assistant to Dr. Knox. The real Dr. Knox is who Burke and Hare sold the bodies to.

I read that before he came to the USA and found himself typecast as Count Dracula, he was Hungary's answer to John Barrymore. I can see why.
