Debbie Roth | 7 comments Patchett had me at the first line, “The christening party took a turn when Albert Cousins arrived with gin.” I’m still reading, and it’s quite an odyssey through the realities of divorce, 20th century style. Beverly’s mental dialogue about the kids is hysterical. It’s a darkly funny novel to me so far, and I’m really enjoying it. I read The Dutch House in early September, so this is only my second Ann Patchett novel, but definitely not my last.

Erin Carter | 4 comments I am about a quarter of the way through this novel. The first chapter describes the pivotal moment when two family's trajectories change. Then we jump forward fifty years and are introduced to the consequences of that moment. I am really enjoying this book so far--the author's structure of the story--specifically her use of shifting time to create an emotional impact (as opposed to a linear story structure) is keeping me engaged and wondering what is going to happen between point a and point b.

Sandy Carlaccini | 1 comments I have read the pivotal moment but not much further. Need to get a move on... I’m glad you are enjoying it.

Lynn Nicke | 1 comments Sorry, I am not that far into it yet. I need to pick up the pace!!!

Erin Carter | 4 comments I really enjoyed "Commonwealth." It is the first book I have read by Ann Patchett--I will read others :) I liked the exploration of family dynamics and blended families. Also the perspective one gets as they grow up and the ability to forgive themselves and others for youthful mistakes.
