Book review ⭐️ Wow, no thank you by Samantha Irby. A book about unsolicited whining. The title is quite apt ‘wow, no thank you’, indeed.
It’s a collection of essays on Samantha Irby’s reflections on her life and experiences till her current age, 39. It’s her ranting and rambling about the ‘joys’ of ageing, the menace of a malfunctioning uterus and gut, the perils of a rapidly diminishing bank balance, the never ending aches and pains, etc. Someone’s bowel movements or lack of are really not my area of interest, if it were I would buy a book on it, preferably by a doctor. I am very appreciative of her attempt to transform the ordinary into funny and fill up 300 pages, however, toilet humour just does not appeal to me. At the same age, I am not the target audience, clearly.
The language of the book is casual, colloquial and very YA, it’s screaming ‘I don’t wanna ever leave my 20s’, there’s not a page without a swear word. At first the book was really annoying, by the end of it, I just felt sad. She’s someone who’s constantly seeking validation and trying to fit in and she does it by being condescending, each to their own, I guess. I am genuinely sorry that she suffers from all these ailments. And, I certainly think she needs to up the hygiene and cleanliness levels.
I have to quite willingly admit, I was absolutely mortified by the book, given the rave reviews. Its not my most enjoyable read, in-fact quite the contrary.
