To Completion

We are going to follow the travels of Phileas Fogg from this classic adventure novel
by Jules Verne.
80-Days-2

✱ Published in 1873, this classic has become synonymous with travel over the years. Phileas Fogg, a rich British gentleman, sets off with his French valet, Jean Passepartout, on an epic adventure that takes him all over the world in order to win a bet he made for £20,000. He sets out to prove that with the opening of India's new railway it is possible to travel around the world in 80 days.
✱ Today parts of Fogg's journey would be very difficult to complete due to travel restrictions and lack of available ocean travel. Despite this, there have been many real life imitations. The two most famous were Nellie Bly in 1889, who traveled the world in 72 days for her newspaper, and in 1988, Michael Palin (Monty Python) completed the journey for a BBC travelogue in 79 days and 7 hours.
✱ It's interesting that the Hot Air Balloon has become a popular image connected with the book because Fogg never actually used that method of transportation. It was made popular by the 1956 film where a hot air balloon was used for a portion of the journey.

Below you will find Fogg's itinerary. Choose one of the options and complete a task for each location for a total of 27 tasks.
Option One: Complete the tasks IN ORDER.
Option Two: Complete the tasks in any order.

Challenge Rules: All forms of books are accepted as long as they are 100 pages or more. When posting updates of completed books, please include a link to the title and author’s name, along with the date you finished reading the book. When you have finished the challenge, please copy and paste your entire challenge and re-post in a new message, letting us know it is completed.

Bon Voyage!!

ITINERARY

Days 1 - 3

1. London, England - The Reform Club
PA900060
Upper class gentlemen of the 19th century frequented “gentlemen clubs” on a regular basis. Fogg’s bet was made in The Reform Club, which does exist. Founded in 1836, it is a private members' club that was comprised of an all-male membership for decades. It wasn’t until 1982 that it changed its rules to include the admission of women. It was the first gentlemen’s club in London to make the change.

Read a book that has a male MC (tell us who) or read a book that takes place in the 1800’s.

2. Dover, England
Dover-SM
Fogg and his valet, Passepartout ,begin their journey on the night of October 2, 1872. Their first challenge is to cross The English Channel. There isn’t a lot of detail regarding this in the book but they would have had to take a train to Dover, the closest ferry port on the Strait of Dover which is the narrowest part of the English Channel. Though now the area may be better known for the spectacular White Cliffs of Dover which bring travelers from all over the world to see.

Read a book that was published in the month of October (any year) or read a book that is narrow (100 - 150 pages long).

3. Calais, France
Calais-SM
The ferry’s destination was the French port of Calais. Since the Middle Ages it has been an important center for trading with England. Under English rule from 1347 to 1558, it was called the "brightest jewel in the English crown". Calais is still a key transport hub, but also draws visitors as a popular beach destination and is home to the Lace Museum for which the town is famed.

Read a book with something “bright” on the cover (post cover) or read a book with a title that begins with a letter in LACE (you can use or ignore A, An or The).

4. Paris, France
arc-de-triomphe-SM
The next step of Fogg’s journey would be getting to Paris - a 3 hour train ride from Calais. At the time, Paris was in the middle of a major restoration period following a recent revolution. Even though the iconic Eiffel Tower was not yet built, the city was gaining beautiful squares and parks and wide new avenues all converging at the famous Arc de Triomphe. Fogg would not have had the time to enjoy the charms of the city but would be switching trains and heading through the French alps to Italy on the Orient Express.

Read a book with a three word title or read a book whose author's first and last initial can be found in ORIENT EXPRESS.

5. Turin, Italy
Turin-SM
Our adventurers’ train stops in Turin, a major political center in northern Italy that served as the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy from 1861 to 1865. Today it is an important business and cultural center known for its rich architecture, numerous art galleries, churches, palaces, opera houses, piazzas, and museums.

Read a book that takes place in a capital city (tell us where) or read a book that mentions one of the following (include text): art gallery, church, palace, opera house, piazza, or museum.

6. Brindisi, Italy
Brindisi-SM
Fogg now heads south by rail to the charming city of Brindisi which lies on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. Due to its strategic position on the Italian Peninsula, the city has played an important role in trade. Fogg and his valet board the steamer The Mongolia for a 4 day voyage to cross the Mediterranean Sea.

Read a series book #4 or read a book with the letters SEA intact in the title.

Days 4 - 7

7. Mediterranean Sea
Med-Sea-SM
Their steamer heads out to the Mediterranean Sea which is actually made up of many smaller seas and borders 22 different countries. For hundreds of years it has served as the central superhighway of transport, trade and cultural exchange between diverse peoples encompassing three continents. The Mongolia was probably just one of many steamers crossing the sea since it boasts some of the world’s busiest shipping routes.

Read a book that has a ship in the story or on the cover (post cover) or read a book that takes place in a country that borders the Mediterranean Sea.

Days 8 - 20

8. Suez Canal, Egypt
Entrance-to-the-Suez-Canal-Port-Said-Egypt-Liebig-educational-card-late-19th-or-early-20th-century
Arriving in Egypt, Fogg’s first sign of trouble begins. Mistaken for a notorious bank robber, a Scotland Yard detective joins them when they reboard The Mongolia and he follows Fogg for the remainder of the journey. They travel down the newly built Suez Canal which connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea making it the shortest link between the east and the west. This important thoroughfare opened for navigation in November of 1869.

Read a book with a character that is a detective or read a book that mainly takes place during the month of November.

9. Aden, Yemen
Aden-SM
The steamer made a stop in the city of Aden. At the time, Aden was a British Colony and an important port and coaling station for trade between British India, the Far East, and Europe. The commercial and strategic importance increased considerably when the Suez Canal opened. From then and until the 1960s, the Port of Aden was one of the busiest ship-bunkering, duty-free shopping, and trading ports in the world. Unfortunately, today Aden is considered a highly dangerous destination and closed to travelers.

Read a book where the MC travels to a dangerous location (tell us where) or read a book with an MC whose first name starts with a letter in ADEN.

Days 21 - 23

10. Bombay (Mumbai), India
Bombay-SM
Promising the captain a reward if they arrive ahead of schedule, they cross the Arabian Sea and sail into Bombay two days early. Known as "The Gateway to India", it was a booming trade center in the 19th century and home to the country’s first railway. Fogg soon discovers the Trans-Indian Railway ends 50 miles short of Calcutta, their next destination, so he must make an alternative plan. Believe it or not, he purchases an elephant, hires a guide, and the group rides the elephant through the Indian jungles.

Read a book that takes place in India or has a jungle setting or read a book with a total page count that includes both 5 AND 0.

11. Allahabad, India
Elephant-SM
The adventure continues when our travelers rescue Aouda, a young woman about to be put to her death at a Sati ceremony, a former practice in India whereby a widow throws herself onto her husband's funeral pyre. They create a plan to have Passepartout take the place of the deceased husband on the pyre - rising from the dead, scaring the priests so they can carry Aouda away. Their plan works and they even manage to make it to Allababad in time to catch the train to Calcutta.

Read a book tagged ADVENTURE on its GR homepage or read a book where a funeral takes place.

Days 24 - 36

12. Calcutta, India
Calcutta-SM
Fashioned by the colonial British in the manner of a grand European city, Calcutta was the capital of India at the time and under British rule. It is now one of India’s largest cities and one of its major ports. Then considered British soil, Detective Fix takes the opportunity to arrest Fogg and Passepartout but of course, they escape, jump bail and hurry off to board their awaiting steamer The Rangoon which is heading to Hong Kong. Fix also boards the steamer at the last minute - he will not give up!

Read a book with a double T (tt) or double O (oo) intact in its title or author’s name.

13. Singapore
Zoo-2-SM
During their 13 day journey across the South China Sea, the steamer makes a stop in Singapore to take on more coal. During the 19th century, Singapore quickly grew as an important trade hub, attracting immigrants from China, India, the Malay Archipelago and beyond. We discover that something is brewing between Fogg and Aouda - they disembark for a romantic carriage ride through the city. You can actually still take a horse and carriage ride through the Singapore Zoo.

Read a book tagged ROMANCE on its GR Homepage or read a book with a romantic activity in it (tell us what it was).

Jan | 20729 comments The Journey Continued

Days 37 - 42

14. Hong Kong, China
Tea-Farm-SM2
Hong Kong was another British Crown Colony in the 19th century. It was the main supplier of tea to the Commonwealth and in return they supplied the country with opium. Seeing this as his last chance to arrest Fogg, Detective Fix uses this drug to his advantage, taking Passepartout to an opium den, keeping him from informing Fogg of a change in the departure time of their next vessel, The Carnatic. The valet manages to catch the steamer but as Fix hoped, Fogg misses the departure. But Fogg still outsmarts the detective and escapes arrest.

Read a book with a teacup or teapot on the cover (post cover) or read a book where drug or alcohol abuse is important to the plot (tell us how).

15. Shanghai, China
Shanghai-3-SM
Not finding another steamer in Hong Kong, Fogg and Aouda take a pilot boat to Shanghai. One of the first Chinese ports to be opened to Western trade, Shanghai has become one of the world's largest seaports. Its striking skyline today would look like science fiction to Fogg in the 19th century. They do find a steamer that will take them both to Yokohama where they hope to meet up with Passepartout.

Read a book tagged SCIENCE FICTION on its GR Homepage or read a book that takes place in a metropolitan city (tell us where).

16. Yokohama, Japan
Chinatown3-SM
Just south of Tokyo, Yokohama is a Japanese port that was opened to foreign trade in 1859 and became home to a large population of Chinese. Today it boasts having the largest Chinatown in all of Asia. Our travelers have all arrived safely and Fogg starts the search for his valet. He finds him working in a circus trying to earn his fare home. After being reunited, the four of them (including Detective Fix, who promises to stop trying to delay Fogg) board a paddle-steamer, the General Grant, to take them across the Pacific.

Read a book with a title or author name (first or last) that starts with Y (ignore A, An or The) or read a book that has the word CIRCUS in the text (share text).

Days 43 - 64

17. Trans Pacific Crossing
Steamer-SM
This is the longest portion of their journey, taking 22 days to cross the Pacific Ocean. They have spent a great deal of time on steamers which were a major driver of trade globalization. In 1867, the Pacific Mail Steamship Company launched the first regularly scheduled trans-Pacific steamship service with a route between San Francisco, Hong Kong, and Yokohama. This route led to an influx of Japanese and Chinese immigrants, bringing additional cultural diversity to California.

Read a book with the ocean on the cover (post cover) or read a book with a character that is an immigrant (tell us who).

Days 65 - 71

18. San Francisco, California USA
San-Francisco-SM
They arrive in the US via San Francisco, which had experienced two recent booms - the 1849 Gold Rush and the discovery of silver in the Comstock Lode in 1859. It had grown from a village of 800 people into a busy city of 35,000. Our travelers board the Pacific Railroad Train bound for Omaha, Nebraska not knowing that there are many obstacles ahead for them.

Read a book with over 35,000 ratings on its GR homepage or read a book with TWO of the following numbers in its total page count: 1, 8, 4, 5, 9 (share page count).

19. Ogden & Salt Lake City, Utah USA
Great-Salt-Lake-2-SM
The train crosses the Sierra Nevada mountain range into the state of Nevada where it must stop and wait for a giant herd of bison to cross the tracks. They enter Utah and marvel at the Great Salt Lake, the largest salt lake in the Western Hemisphere. The train then has a 6 hour layover in Ogden, Utah so our travelers take the opportunity to cure their curiosity about Mormonism and visit Salt Lake City, the Mormon capital founded
in 1847.

Read a book tagged NON-FICTION on its GR homepage or read a book that taught you something new (tell us what).

20. Medicine Bow, Wyoming USA
Train-2-SM
Traveling into Wyoming and crossing the Rocky Mountains, the train is forced to stop near Medicine Bow because the suspension bridge that crosses the river has been damaged by bad weather and they are not sure it will support the weight of the train. After much deliberation they decide they can try crossing at full speed! They barely make it across before the bridge completely collapses into the rapids of the river. Close call!!! Maybe this is a good reason why suspension bridges are rarely used for railways anymore.

Read a book that got your heart racing (tell us why) or read a book with a train, bridge or river on the cover (post cover).

21. Fort Kearney, Nebraska USA
Fort-SM
There is more excitement ahead when the train is attacked by Sioux Indians near Fort Kearney, an important stage station built in 1848 as a safe haven for Overland Trail travelers, Pony Express riders, and gold prospectors. The soldiers at the fort scare the attackers away but it was soon discovered that Passepartout had been kidnapped. Fogg departs with a team of soldiers, leaving Aouda in the capable hands of Detective Fix, and goes off to rescue his faithful valet. He is successful but when he returns he finds that the train has left without them.

Read a book that has a kidnapping or rescue in the plot (briefly share details) or read a book with a title that starts with a letter in SIOUX (ignore A, An or The).

22. Omaha, Nebraska USA
Sledge-3
Our travelers’ next mode of transportation was quite unusual - a sledge with sails! Fashioned to the “sail” over the frozen plains, it could reach a speed equal if not superior to that of the express trains. The distance between Fort Kearney and Omaha, as the birds fly, is almost 200 hundred miles. If the wind held good, the distance might be traversed in five hours, reaching Omaha in time to catch the train. And that they did with only enough time to board!

Read a book from your TBR that is numbered in the 200 range (200 - 299) when sorted by date added or read a book with sails on the cover (post cover).

23. Chicago, Illinois, USA
rebuilding-SM
Chicago is their next destination where they hope to find a train that will take them to New York City. The Windy City was in the throes of the “Great Rebuilding” from the devastating fire that happened the year previously, destroying 4 square miles of the city and leaving more than 100,000 residents homeless. Fogg and his companions find the city has risen from its ruins, proudly seated on the borders of its beautiful Lake Michigan. They board a train that will take them through Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey like a flash, hoping to catch the steamer bound for England.

Read a book that is set in one of these US states: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, or New Jersey or read a book that has fire as a central plot theme.

24. New York, New York USA
New-York-2
New York City in 1872 would look very different from the city we know. Several key landmarks would be missing: the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge. “Missing” is the key word here - our globetrotters arrive to discover they have missed their transportation home by just a few hours. The only steamer available is heading to Bordeaux, France. With no other options they board the Henrietta the next morning.

Read a book with the letters (intact) HEN or MISS found in the title, series name or author’s name.

Days 72 - 80

25. Queenstown (Cobh), Ireland
Cobh-SM
The 80 day mark is fast approaching and Fogg is getting desperate! He cannot convince the captain of the ship to make a detour so he bribes the crew to mutiny and make course for Liverpool. They encounter hurricane force winds and eventually run out of fuel. But Fogg buys the ship from the captain and has the crew burn the wooden parts of the ship for fuel. Unfortunately, they only get as far as Queenstown, Ireland, a seaport town now known as Cobh and famous for being the last port of call of the ill-fated Titanic.

Read a book that has had a title change for republication (share book titles) or read a book set in a coastal town.

26. Liverpool, England
Liverpool-SM
Fogg’s party catches an express mail train to Dublin where they board a ferry to Liverpool, the famous maritime city that brought us The Beatles. Fogg is ahead of schedule but Detective Fix throws him a curveball - he has a warrant for his arrest, unbeknownst to him that the real thief was actually arrested 3 days earlier in Scotland. The misunderstanding is soon ironed out, Fogg is released and charters a train to London with very little time to spare and certain he has lost the wager.

Read a book where someone is arrested (tell us who) or read a book that you checked out at the library and had to renew because you ran out of time.

27. London, England
Wedding
Fogg, Aouda and Passepartout finally arrive at London but are five minutes past their deadline. Fogg is feeling defeated and has spent every penny he owns. He apologizes to Aouda for bringing her on this journey but she confesses her love for him and asks that he marry her right away. Passepartout goes to find a minister and learns that they have mistaken the date - because they have traveled eastward, they gained a day crossing the International Date Line. Fogg not only has won a bride but is able to get to the Reform Club in time and wins the wager too!

Read a book that includes a marriage proposal or ceremony or read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in INTERNATIONAL DATE LINE (three word minimum).

Hope you enjoyed the trip!!!

Around the World in 80 Days Journey
October 1, 2020 to December 14, 2020
27/27
Option Two: Complete the tasks IN ANY ORDER.

ITINERARY

√1. London, England - The Reform Club

✱ Read a book that has a male MC (tell us who) Inspector Wexford in The Veiled One by Ruth Rendell 10.23.20

√2. Dover, England

✱ Read a book that was published in the month of October Harm Done by Ruth Rendell 10.2.20 was published October 10, 2000

√3. Calais, France

✱ Read a book with a title that begins with a letter in LACE (you can use or ignore A, An or The). Clutch of Constables by Ngaio Marsh 10.9.20

√4. Paris, France

✱ Read a book with a three word title Shadows in Death by J.D. Robb 10.14.20

√5. Turin, Italy
Our adventurers’ train stops in Turin, a major political center in
northern Italy that served as the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy from 1861 to 1865. Today it is an important business and cultural center known for its rich architecture, numerous art galleries, churches, palaces, opera houses, piazzas, and museums.

✱ Read a book that takes place in a capital city (tell us where) :Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg by Irin Carmon takes place in the US capitol city of Washington, D.C.

√6. Brindisi, Italy

✱ Read a series book #4 - #4 in the World War II Brave Women Fiction Book series The Jewish Spy: A WW2 Historical Novel, Based on a True Story of a Jewish Holocaust Survivor by Hayuta Katzenelson 10.19.20

√7. Mediterranean Sea

✱ Read a book that takes place in a country that borders the Mediterranean Sea. My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante 10.16.20

√8. Suez Canal, Egypt

✱ Read a book with a character that is a detective - Miss Silver, Private Detective She Came Back by Patricia Wentworth 11.6.20

√9. Aden, Yemen

✱ Read a book with an MC whose first name starts with a letter in ADEN. Eliot Wray in The Clock Strikes Twelve by Patricia Wentworth 11.2.20

√10. Bombay (Mumbai), India

✱ Read a book with a total page count that includes both 5 AND 0. Judas by Amos Oz 11.24.20 305 pages

√11. Allahabad, India

✱ Read a book where a funeral takes place. The Peacock's Cry by Paul Doherty - Ranulf's colleague Vicomte is killed and the funeral take place at the nunnery - 10.3.20

√12. Calcutta, India

✱ Read a book with a double T (tt) or double O (oo) intact in its title or author’s name. two Ts in title and two 0s in author's name: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot 11.21.20

√13. Singapore

✱ Read a book tagged ROMANCE on its GR Homepage The Hideaway by Lauren Denton 10.4.20

√14. Hong Kong, China

✱ Read a book where drug or alcohol abuse is important to the plot (tell us how). John by Cynthia Lennon 10.25.20 = drug abuse by John led to break up of their marriage - and he ignored his son, Julian, because he was always high

√15. Shanghai, China

✱ Read a book that takes place in a metropolitan city (tell us where). Berlin - Field Gray by Philip Kerr 11.10.20

√16. Yokohama, Japan

✱ Read a book that has the word CIRCUS in the text (share text). "Hitler's circus master of anti-Semitism" Loc 1552 In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin by Erik Larson 10.31.20

√17. Trans Pacific Crossing

✱ Read a book a character that is an immigrant (tell us who). Cold Breath by Quentin Bates 11.4.20 Osman is one of the immigrants

Denise | 2870 comments Journey Continued

√18. San Francisco, California USA

✱ Read a book with TWO of the following numbers in its total page count: 1, 8, 4, 5, 9 (share page count). 193 pagesA Guilty Thing Surprised by Ruth Rendell 10.28.20

√19. Ogden & Salt Lake City, Utah USA
The train crosses the Sierra Nevada mountain range into the state of Nevada where it must stop and wait for a giant herd of bison to cross the tracks. They enter Utah and marvel at the Great Salt Lake, the largest salt lake in the Western Hemisphere. The train then has a 6 hour layover in Ogden, Utah so our travelers take the opportunity to cure their curiosity about Mormonism and visit Salt Lake City, the Mormon capital founded
in 1847.

✱ Read a book tagged NON-FICTION on its GR homepage Project 333: The Minimalist Fashion Challenge That Proves Less Really Is So Much More by Courtney Carver 11.29.20

√20. Medicine Bow, Wyoming USA

✱ Read a book with a train, bridge or river on the cover (post cover). The Secret River The Secret River by Kate Grenville by Kate Grenville 10.27.20

√21. Fort Kearney, Nebraska USA

✱ Read a book that has a kidnapping or rescue in the plot (briefly share details) Jane is held hostage by Max who has become deranged after his wife's death; she is rescued by the police. The Risk of Darkness by Susan Hill 11.15.20

√22. Omaha, Nebraska USA

✱ Read a book from your TBR that is numbered in the 200 range (200 - 299) when sorted by date added 0 #218 Olive, Again by Elizabeth Strout 11.7.20

√23. Chicago, Illinois, USA

✱ Read a book that is set in one of these US states: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, or New Jersey Confessions of a Curious Bookseller by Elizabeth Green 12.14.20 is set in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

√24. New York, New York USA

✱ Read a book with the letters (intact) HEN or MISS found in the title, series name or author’s name. Series Name: Miss Silver mysteries In the Balance by Patricia Wentworth 10.21.20

√25. Queenstown (Cobh), Ireland

✱ Read a book that has had a title change for republication (share book titles) The Gazebo by Patricia Wentworth 11.9.29 was originally published as The Summerhouse

√26. Liverpool, England

✱ Read a book where someone is arrested (tell us who) Miss Jones The Case of William Smith by Patricia Wentworth 11.16.20

√27. London, England

✱ Read a book that where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in INTERNATIONAL DATE LINE (three word minimum). If The Dead Rise Not by Philip Kerr 10.17.20

✱ Read a book tagged ADVENTURE on its GR homepage or read a book where a funeral takes place.

12. Calcutta, India

✱ Read a book with a double T (tt) or double O (oo) intact in its title or author’s name.

13. Singapore

✱ Read a book tagged ROMANCE on its GR Homepage or read a book with a romantic activity in it (tell us what it was).

14. Hong Kong, China

✱ Read a book with a teacup or teapot on the cover (post cover) or read a book where drug or alcohol abuse is important to the plot (tell us how).

15. Shanghai, China

✱ Read a book tagged SCIENCE FICTION on its GR Homepage or read a book that takes place in a metropolitan city (tell us where).

16. Yokohama, Japan

✱ Read a book with a title or author name (first or last) that starts with Y (ignore A, An or The) or read a book that has the word CIRCUS in the text (share text).

17. Trans Pacific Crossing

✱ Read a book with the ocean on the cover (post cover) or read a book with a character that is an immigrant (tell us who).

18. San Francisco, California USA

✱ Read a book with over 35,000 ratings on its GR homepage or read a book with TWO of the following numbers in its total page count: 1, 8, 4, 5, 9 (share page count).

The train then has a 6 hour layover in Ogden, Utah so our travelers take the opportunity to cure their curiosity about Mormonism and visit Salt Lake City, the Mormon capital founded
in 1847.

✱ Read a book tagged NON-FICTION on its GR homepage or read a book that taught you something new (tell us what).

20. Medicine Bow, Wyoming USA

✱ Read a book that got your heart racing (tell us why) or read a book with a train, bridge or river on the cover (post cover).

21. Fort Kearney, Nebraska USA

✱ Read a book that has a kidnapping or rescue in the plot (briefly share details) or read a book with a title that starts with a letter in SIOUX (ignore A, An or The).

22. Omaha, Nebraska USA

✱ Read a book from your TBR that is numbered in the 200 range (200 - 299) when sorted by date added or read a book with sails on the cover (post cover).

23. Chicago, Illinois, USA

✱ Read a book that is set in one of these US states: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, or New Jersey or read a book that has fire as a central plot theme.

24. New York, New York USA

✱ Read a book with the letters (intact) HEN or MISS found in the title, series name or author’s name.

25. Queenstown (Cobh), Ireland

✱ Read a book that has had a title change for republication (share book titles) or read a book set in a coastal town.

26. Liverpool, England

✱ Read a book where someone is arrested (tell us who) or read a book that you checked out at the library and had to renew because you ran out of time.

27. London, England

✱ Read a book that includes a marriage proposal or ceremony or read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in INTERNATIONAL DATE LINE (three word minimum).

23/27

Option One: Complete the tasks IN ORDER.

ITINERARY

✔1. London, England - The Reform Club

✱ Read a book that has a male MC (tell us who)-Gene Forrester in A Separate Peace by John Knowles-10/7/20
or read a book that takes place in the 1800’s.

✔2. Dover, England

✱ Read a book that was published in the month of October (any year) or read a book that is narrow (100 - 150 pages long).-128p.- A Long Walk to Water: Based on a True Story by Linda Sue Park 10/21/20

✔3. Calais, France

✱ Read a book with something “bright” on the cover (post cover) or read a book with a title that begins with a letter in LACE (you can use or ignore A, An or The). - Ask the Cards a Question by Marcia Muller-12/2/20

✔4. Paris, France

✱ Read a book with a three word title - The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead 1/4/21
or read a book whose author's first and last initial can be found in ORIENT EXPRESS.

✔5. Turin, Italy

✱ Read a book that takes place in a capital city (tell us where) -London- The Shoemaker's Holiday by Thomas Dekker 1/10/21
or read a book that mentions one of the following (include text): art gallery, church, palace, opera house, piazza, or museum.

6. Brindisi, Italy

✱ Read a series book #4 - Games to Keep the Dark Away by Marcia Muller-3/25/21-series#4
or read a book with the letters SEA intact in the title.

7. Mediterranean Sea

✱ Read a book that has a ship in the story or on the cover (post cover) or read a book that takes place in a country that borders the Mediterranean Sea.-France- The Uttermost Farthing by Marie Belloc Lowndes-5/6/21-

8. Suez Canal, Egypt

✱ Read a book with a character that is a detective - Inspector Rutledge in Cold Comfort by Charles Todd-5/7/21-
or read a book that mainly takes place during the month of November.

9. Aden, Yemen

✱ Read a book where the MC travels to a dangerous location (tell us where) -the MC gets locked in a dungeon while conducting investigations in Urn Burial by Kerry Greenwood-6/1/21
or read a book with an MC whose first name starts with a letter in ADEN.

10. Bombay (Mumbai), India

✱ Read a book that takes place in India or has a jungle setting - Mrs. Pollifax on Safari by Dorothy Gilman -6/14/21
or read a book with a total page count that includes both 5 AND 0.

11. Allahabad, India

✱ Read a book tagged ADVENTURE on its GR homepage or read a book where a funeral takes place. - The author discusses the funeral of Divine in Mr. Know-It-All: The Tarnished Wisdom of a Filth Elder by John Waters-6/28/21

12. Calcutta, India

✱ Read a book with a double T (tt) or double O (oo) intact in its title or author’s name. - The Judge and His Hangman by Friedrich Dürrenmatt-7/4/21

13. Singapore

✱ Read a book tagged ROMANCE on its GR Homepage or read a book with a romantic activity in it (tell us what it was). -It may be mostly in the mind of the narrator...but she imagines a romance in several situations in My Tender Matador by Pedro Lemebel 7/9/21

14. Hong Kong, China

✱ Read a book with a teacup or teapot on the cover (post cover) or read a book where drug or alcohol abuse is important to the plot (tell us how). - Most of the characters are drunk or in the process of becoming drunk in Greenwich Killing Time by Kinky Friedman-4/30/22-

16. Yokohama, Japan

✱ Read a book with a title or author name (first or last) that starts with Y (ignore A, An or The) - Year of the Monkey by Patti Smith-6/28/22 -
or read a book that has the word CIRCUS in the text (share text).

17. Trans Pacific Crossing

✱ Read a book with the ocean on the cover (post cover) or read a book with a character that is an immigrant (tell us who).-Liz, a Scottish woman immigrates to Argentina in The Adventures of China Iron by Gabriela Cabezón Cámara-7/19/22-

Ed Lehman | 707 comments 18. San Francisco, California USA

✱ Read a book with over 35,000 ratings on its GR homepage or read a book with TWO of the following numbers in its total page count: 1, 8, 4, 5, 9 (share page count). -152p.- -Pouliuli by Albert Wendt-7/21/22-

The train then has a 6 hour layover in Ogden, Utah so our travelers take the opportunity to cure their curiosity about Mormonism and visit Salt Lake City, the Mormon capital founded
in 1847.

✱ Read a book tagged NON-FICTION on its GR homepage - The Summer Friend by Charles McGrath - 8/5/22
or read a book that taught you something new (tell us what).

20. Medicine Bow, Wyoming USA

✱ Read a book that got your heart racing (tell us why) - a serious love story- Call Me By Your Name by André Aciman-9/2/22-
or read a book with a train, bridge or river on the cover (post cover).

21. Fort Kearney, Nebraska USA

✱ Read a book that has a kidnapping or rescue in the plot (briefly share details) or read a book with a title that starts with a letter in SIOUX (ignore A, An or The). - Semiautomatic by Evie Shockley - 9/6/22-

22. Omaha, Nebraska USA

✱ Read a book from your TBR that is numbered in the 200 range (200 - 299) when sorted by date added #254- Under Fire by Henri Barbusse- 11/23/22-
or read a book with sails on the cover (post cover).

23. Chicago, Illinois, USA

✱ Read a book that is set in one of these US states: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, or New Jersey or read a book that has fire as a central plot theme. -Indiana- A Cut Above by Judi Lynn-4/1/23

24. New York, New York USA

✱ Read a book with the letters (intact) HEN or MISS found in the title, series name or author’s name.- planning (Miss Marple series) The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding by Agatha Christie

25. Queenstown (Cobh), Ireland

✱ Read a book that has had a title change for republication (share book titles) or read a book set in a coastal town. -The MC moves from London to a seaside village in ;The Sea, the Sea by Iris Murdoch-1/4/24

26. Liverpool, England

✱ Read a book where someone is arrested (tell us who) or read a book that you checked out at the library and had to renew because you ran out of time. -the killer is arrested in the end of The Crow Trap by Cleeves, Ann -1/23/24-

27. London, England

✱ Read a book that includes a marriage proposal or ceremony -The title character accepts a marriage proposal in Agatha Raisin and the Witch of Wyckhadden by M.C. Beaton-3/7/24
or read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in INTERNATIONAL DATE LINE (three word minimum).

ITINERARY

1. London, England - The Reform Club

✱ Read a book that has a male MC (tell us who) or read a book that takes place in the 1800’s.

2. Dover, England

✱ Read a book that was published in the month of October (any year) or read a book that is narrow (100 - 150 pages long).

3. Calais, France

✱ Read a book with something “bright” on the cover (post cover) or read a book with a title that begins with a letter in LACE (you can use or ignore A, An or The).

4. Paris, France

✱ Read a book with a three word title or read a book whose author's first and last initial can be found in ORIENT EXPRESS.

5. Turin, Italy

✱ Read a book that takes place in a capital city (tell us where) or read a book that mentions one of the following (include text): art gallery, church, palace, opera house, piazza, or museum.

6. Brindisi, Italy

✱ Read a series book #4 or read a book with the letters SEA intact in the title.

7. Mediterranean Sea

✱ Read a book that has a ship in the story or on the cover (post cover) or read a book that takes place in a country that borders the Mediterranean Sea.

8. Suez Canal, Egypt

✱ Read a book with a character that is a detective or read a book that mainly takes place during the month of November.

9. Aden, Yemen

✱ Read a book where the MC travels to a dangerous location (tell us where) or read a book with an MC whose first name starts with a letter in ADEN.

10. Bombay (Mumbai), India

✱ Read a book that takes place in India or has a jungle setting or read a book with a total page count that includes both 5 AND 0.

11. Allahabad, India

✱ Read a book tagged ADVENTURE on its GR homepage or read a book where a funeral takes place.

12. Calcutta, India

✱ Read a book with a double T (tt) or double O (oo) intact in its title or author’s name.

13. Singapore

✱ Read a book tagged ROMANCE on its GR Homepage or read a book with a romantic activity in it (tell us what it was).

14. Hong Kong, China

✱ Read a book with a teacup or teapot on the cover (post cover) or read a book where drug or alcohol abuse is important to the plot (tell us how).

15. Shanghai, China

✱ Read a book tagged SCIENCE FICTION on its GR Homepage or read a book that takes place in a metropolitan city (tell us where).

16. Yokohama, Japan

✱ Read a book with a title or author name (first or last) that starts with Y (ignore A, An or The) or read a book that has the word CIRCUS in the text (share text).

17. Trans Pacific Crossing

✱ Read a book with the ocean on the cover (post cover) or read a book with a character that is an immigrant (tell us who).

Jess Penhallow | 55 comments 18. San Francisco, California USA

✱ Read a book with over 35,000 ratings on its GR homepage or read a book with TWO of the following numbers in its total page count: 1, 8, 4, 5, 9 (share page count).

The train then has a 6 hour layover in Ogden, Utah so our travelers take the opportunity to cure their curiosity about Mormonism and visit Salt Lake City, the Mormon capital founded
in 1847.

✱ Read a book tagged NON-FICTION on its GR homepage or read a book that taught you something new (tell us what).

20. Medicine Bow, Wyoming USA

✱ Read a book that got your heart racing (tell us why) or read a book with a train, bridge or river on the cover (post cover).

21. Fort Kearney, Nebraska USA

✱ Read a book that has a kidnapping or rescue in the plot (briefly share details) or read a book with a title that starts with a letter in SIOUX (ignore A, An or The).

22. Omaha, Nebraska USA

✱ Read a book from your TBR that is numbered in the 200 range (200 - 299) when sorted by date added or read a book with sails on the cover (post cover).

23. Chicago, Illinois, USA

✱ Read a book that is set in one of these US states: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, or New Jersey or read a book that has fire as a central plot theme.

24. New York, New York USA

✱ Read a book with the letters (intact) HEN or MISS found in the title, series name or author’s name.

25. Queenstown (Cobh), Ireland

✱ Read a book that has had a title change for republication (share book titles) or read a book set in a coastal town.

26. Liverpool, England

✱ Read a book where someone is arrested (tell us who) or read a book that you checked out at the library and had to renew because you ran out of time.

27. London, England

✱ Read a book that includes a marriage proposal or ceremony or read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in INTERNATIONAL DATE LINE (three word minimum).

✱ Read a book that takes place in India or has a jungle setting or read a book with a total page count that includes both 5 AND 0.

11. Allahabad, India

✱ Read a book tagged ADVENTURE on its GR homepage or read a book where a funeral takes place.

12. Calcutta, India

✱ Read a book with a double T (tt) or double O (oo) intact in its title or author’s name.

13. Singapore

✱ Read a book tagged ROMANCE on its GR Homepage or read a book with a romantic activity in it (tell us what it was).

14. Hong Kong, China

✱ Read a book with a teacup or teapot on the cover (post cover) or read a book where drug or alcohol abuse is important to the plot (tell us how).

15. Shanghai, China

✱ Read a book tagged SCIENCE FICTION on its GR Homepage or read a book that takes place in a metropolitan city (tell us where).

16. Yokohama, Japan

✱ Read a book with a title or author name (first or last) that starts with Y (ignore A, An or The) or read a book that has the word CIRCUS in the text (share text).

17. Trans Pacific Crossing

✱ Read a book with the ocean on the cover (post cover) or read a book with a character that is an immigrant (tell us who)

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) | 238 comments 18. San Francisco, California USA

✱ Read a book with over 35,000 ratings on its GR homepage or read a book with TWO of the following numbers in its total page count: 1, 8, 4, 5, 9 (share page count).

The train then has a 6 hour layover in Ogden, Utah so our travelers take the opportunity to cure their curiosity about Mormonism and visit Salt Lake City, the Mormon capital founded
in 1847.

✱ Read a book tagged NON-FICTION on its GR homepage or read a book that taught you something new (tell us what).

20. Medicine Bow, Wyoming USA

✱ Read a book that got your heart racing (tell us why) or read a book with a train, bridge or river on the cover (post cover).

21. Fort Kearney, Nebraska USA

✱ Read a book that has a kidnapping or rescue in the plot (briefly share details) or read a book with a title that starts with a letter in SIOUX (ignore A, An or The).

22. Omaha, Nebraska USA

✱ Read a book from your TBR that is numbered in the 200 range (200 - 299) when sorted by date added or read a book with sails on the cover (post cover).

23. Chicago, Illinois, USA

✱ Read a book that is set in one of these US states: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, or New Jersey or read a book that has fire as a central plot theme.

24. New York, New York USA

✱ Read a book with the letters (intact) HEN or MISS found in the title, series name or author’s name.

25. Queenstown (Cobh), Ireland

✱ Read a book that has had a title change for republication (share book titles) or read a book set in a coastal town.

26. Liverpool, England

✱ Read a book where someone is arrested (tell us who) or read a book that you checked out at the library and had to renew because you ran out of time.

27. London, England

✱ Read a book that includes a marriage proposal or ceremony or read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in INTERNATIONAL DATE LINE (three word minimum).

I do prefer that it's on the MPG but if the Indie book is obviously in the requested genre I would take it. Does that make sense?
