For me the hero HAS to have a good name otherwise it'll bug me throughout the book. I like:

Jack (Wicked Ties, Shayla Black)

Peter (Cold as Ice, Anne Stuart)

Christian (Flowers from the Storm, (Laura Kinsale)

Matt (Paradise, Judith McNaught)

Circenn (The Highlander's Touch, KM Moning)

Sebastian (Black Ice, Anne Stuart)

Killoran (To Love a Dark Lord, Anne Stuart--that wasn't his first name but everyone called him that)

Bowen (Wicked Deeds on a Winter's Night, Kresley Cole)

Lachlan (A Hunger Like No Other, Kresley Cole)

Caine (Caine's Reckoning, Sarah McCarty)

Kol/Cole (The Sea King, Jolie Mathis)

Kelly (never read an alpha with the name yet but I think it could work!)

Any other finds??

"Jack" is a really cool name and so is "Cade".

message 3: by Crystal (new)

Crystal | 16 comments I love Bastien. Something about that name is so sexy.

Also, I've always loved Stephen David Elliot Westmoreland from Judith McNaught's Until You. There's nothing special about his first name, but when you string all his names together it sounds very yummy.

message 4: by Kathrynn (new)

Kathrynn Roarke, Bastien is a good one, too. Cade, Jack--Teryl's list--I like it!

Lucien...

Gabrielle...

Michael...

[*embarrassed*}......could someone explain "alpha" and "uber"? I am new to the reading world and have never heard these expressions before. I know.........I have a lot to learn and a lot of reading to catch up on. I can assume, but you know what they say when you assume (LOL) and I would love clarification. Thanks

Robin

Auntee | 494 comments Hi Robin!

To me, an alpha is a 'top dog', a guy who can take charge, knows what he's doing, can handle any situation thrown at him-- nothing can stop him, he's got it all under control, nothing scares him--except maybe the feelings he has for his woman!

And an uber? To me, an uber-alpha is just an alpha to the max! Just very, very alpha! lol!

Anyone else?

message 7: by Eastofoz (new)

Eastofoz | 666 comments Mod
Hey Robin!

I agree with Auntee on the uber/alpha meaning. I remember when I first heard of alpha, beta, gamma heroes and I was like "what??!!!" And then some kind soul explained it all so ask away so you can enjoy your books even more :D

message 8: by Addicted2Luv (new)

Addicted2Luv | 7 comments What is gamma?

message 9: by Eastofoz (new)

Eastofoz | 666 comments Mod
Addicted2luv, a gamma hero is your dark and brooding mean s.o.b --like one of Anne Stuart's ICE heroes. They act really evil to the heroine but in the end they end up redeeming themselves (usually!) They're the alpha in extreme you could say :) Stuart has the best gammas in my opinion.

Got a ticker up for Rydstrom's story (Kresley Cole's KISS OF A DEMON KING, book #7 in the Immortals after Dark series). He's got a cool name --but of course he would, he's Cade's brother after all (lol!) ;)

message 11: by Kathrynn (new)

Kathrynn Cool East! Seems so far away...can't wait.

message 12: by Eastofoz (new)

Eastofoz | 666 comments Mod
It does seem like an eternity doesn't it! :(

message 13: by Auntee (new)

Auntee | 494 comments Love the 'ticker'--it's so cute!:)

message 14: by Eastofoz (new)

Eastofoz | 666 comments Mod
Thanks Auntee :D I was thinking of adding another one for Ward's next BDB and the next Hell's 8 book.

message 15: by new_user (new)

new_user Oh, Ward's next book, is it coming out soon?

Hey, did you guys know that some authors have widgets for MS Vista now? LOL, technology these days...

message 16: by Eastofoz (last edited Oct 27, 2008 12:16PM) (new)

Eastofoz | 666 comments Mod
Well it's coming out May 5 2009 (LOVER AVENGED) so it's still a wee far off --lol!

TUCKER'S CLAIM by McCarty is out sometime in April 2009.

message 17: by new_user (new)

new_user *grumbles* Nothing's coming out soon, LOL. I haven't tried McCarty's new series yet. Any good?

message 18: by Eastofoz (new)

Eastofoz | 666 comments Mod
Oh ya! I really liked SAM'S CREED (book #2) but not as much CAINE'S RECKONING book#1 (though it has a better cover! LOL!) You don't have to read them in order I thought. She's a very good writer and you really get that western feel. That's usually not my first choice of books but she's definitely an author I'm liking. I'm reading her Promises series now and book #1 is really good!

message 19: by new_user (new)

new_user Yeah, she's a good one. I've been thinking about trying out more Westerns. They can get really cheesy though-- not so much a problem with Regencies, I find, LOL. Promises is a good series. Reading #3 right now. :)

message 20: by Eastofoz (new)

Eastofoz | 666 comments Mod
Have you ever read Heather Graham's westerns? I have APACHE SUMMER and RIDES A HERO on TBR that I've been meaning ot get to.

message 21: by new_user (new)

new_user Nope, I didn't realize she wrote any. Might give her a try. :)

message 22: by Auntee (new)

Auntee | 494 comments Did anyone mention 'Rafe' for an alpha name?

message 23: by Pamela(AllHoney) (new)

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) Its not a bad name but I keep getting images from my younger yrs when I used to party and upon occasion "rafe". sorry not a nice picture :)

message 24: by Auntee (new)

Auntee | 494 comments Okay Pamela, I'm not following...does "rafe' mean something? I'm getting some ideas, but...?

message 25: by new_user (new)

new_user Rafe is a good name. Er, I'd like to know what it means too, LOL.

message 26: by Pamela(AllHoney) (new)

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) Ralphing was a term used for, um, how do u put it nicely? throwing up!

message 27: by Eastofoz (new)

Eastofoz | 666 comments Mod
Ewww Pamela (lol!)

I don't like the name Rafe for a hero but in the book I'm currently reading it's a short form for "Raphael" and that worked for me (lol!) I just can't see anyone really being named "Rafe".

message 28: by new_user (new)

new_user LOL, Pamela, yet another word to describe vomiting. It's shocking how many there are. But yeah, Rafe is short for Raphael-- although sometimes I have to wonder if the name was so popular, as much as it's used in Regencies.

message 29: by Auntee (new)

Auntee | 494 comments That's funny--the book I'm reading now also has a hero named 'Rafe' which is short for Raphael. I know we're not reading the same book, East!:)

Okay Pamela, is that a 'southern' term? We always used the generic 'barf' up here!

message 30: by Pamela(AllHoney) (new)

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) We used it alot while I was in the Navy :)

message 31: by Auntee (new)

Auntee | 494 comments Okay, a military term then!:)

message 32: by Teryl (new)

Teryl I didn't know Rafe was short for Raphael until I read LK's new Wallflower Christmas. It made me like the name better.

message 33: by Kathrynn (new)

Kathrynn What about, "Huggin' the white porcelain."

Ralph for vomit: I think I'm going to ralph.

Like Rafe for Raphael, the latter is really nice.

message 34: by Pamela(AllHoney) (new)

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) kathrynn lol :P

Julie (jjmachshev) (jjmachshev) | 8 comments we always used 'praying to the porcelain god' or 'technicolor burp'...
J

message 36: by Teryl (new)

Teryl Ok, you guys are being gross, LOL :)

Murphy is another cool name.

message 37: by Miss Kim (new)

Miss Kim (thatsmisskimtoyou) Technicolor burp?

I don't know how I stumbled on to this converstioan! LOL!

I like the names Jack, and Caine, Cade-- to name just a few.
Rafe is ok, depending on the hero. For some reason Rafe as a cowboy is ok , but Rafe as a suit wearing 'debonair' type is icky to me. Nerd.

message 38: by Eastofoz (new)

Eastofoz | 666 comments Mod
Cade has my vote too Kim --I've probably only "mentioned" this like 600 times already (lol!)

Jack's another good one :D

message 39: by Teryl (new)

Teryl I just read a book that had triplets named, Phineas, Phillipe, and Phoenix. Phineas and Phoenix are cool names.

message 40: by Miss Kim (last edited Nov 13, 2008 07:46AM) (new)

Miss Kim (thatsmisskimtoyou) East, I may remember you mentioning Cade once or twice.. probably about as much as I mention I love the The Tall Dark Cowboy. :)

Teryl, yeah, Phillipe--not so much!

message 41: by Eastofoz (new)

Eastofoz | 666 comments Mod
LOL Kim --we're just trying to spread the word to those who may not be in the know :p

message 42: by Kathrynn (new)

Kathrynn Speaking of "Ph" names...what about Phury and for that matter isn't it neat how J.R. Ward named her male characters?

Wrath, Phury, Rhage, Viscious...

What an imagination! And those are Alpha names for sure.

message 43: by Addicted2Luv (new)

Addicted2Luv | 7 comments The hero in Promises Keep is named after a critter, Cougar. His mama was a Native American.

message 44: by new_user (new)

new_user I like that name, Cougar.

message 45: by Eastofoz (new)

Eastofoz | 666 comments Mod
I don't like that name (lol!) and I think it's because I've read to many articles recently about women referred to as "cougars" and it bugged me 8)

message 46: by Kathrynn (new)

Kathrynn Yeah, I've been seeing the name "Cougar" used to refer to older women dating younger men. Wonder how that name came to mean THAT? I don't get the implication(s).

message 47: by SamBFN (new)

SamBFN | 13 comments Kathrynn,

In the urban dictionary:

Cougar "A woman in her sexual prime who prefers to hunt rather than be hunted. A cougar's victims are usually under 25, as cougars prefer to mate with men who still have hair. Cougars generally feed and then continue hunting, as they enjoy role reversal. "

message 48: by Kathrynn (new)

Kathrynn ROFLMBO! Thank you for that, Sam.

Wow!

message 49: by Pamela(AllHoney) (new)

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) I looked up popular boys names and decided to list a few of my faves
Aiden
Connor
Dylan
Tristan
Nathan
Chase
Evan
Brendan
Jared
Brody

message 50: by Crystal (new)

Crystal | 16 comments I love the name Chase. I always said if I ever had a boy I would name him Chase, but then the name started getting really popular. So ix-nay on the ase-chay.
