Christine PNW (moonlight_reader) | 131 comments I can' believe that tomorrow is already October! We're reading the noir classic Bunny Lake is Missing by Evelyn Piper this month.

Originally published in 1957, this novel was brought back into print by the Feminist Press at City University of New York as part of their Femmes Fatales imprint, which restores to print the best of women’s writing in the classic pulp genres of the mid-20th century. From mystery to hard-boiled noir to taboo lesbian romance, these rediscovered queens of pulp offer subversive perspectives on a turbulent era. Enjoy the series: Bedelia; The Blackbirder; Bunny Lake Is Missing; By Cecile; The G-String Murders; The Girls in 3-B; In a Lonely Place; Laura; Mother Finds a Body; Now, Voyager; Skyscraper; Stranger on Lesbos; Women's Barracks.

I haven't sourced my copy yet, although it is available for kindle in the U.S. I'm hoping to get to it this coming weekend!

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) I bought mine for about £14 ($20 USD maybe?)

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) Also if you want to read another book by this author instead, The Nanny is super cheap on the kindle.

Kathy E | 2345 comments I’m enjoying the book so far. I’m very much empathizing with Blanche. Piper does a great job of portraying Blanche’s thinking as she’s searching for Bunny and interacting with the other characters. It’ll be interesting to see how the story will be resolved.

There is a film version of the book. My husband was watching it on Turner Classic Movies a couple of weeks ago, in a different room. I asked him not to tell me anything about it, in case I get a chance to read the book sometime.

yes you won't want to know. It was changed to take place in London, an excellent film, which I have seen quite a lot.

Kathy E | 2345 comments This book was fun! I enjoyed the drama of it all. I really didn't know what was going to happen until the very end.

Don't read the back cover of the book! My copy had a bit of a spoiler.

I enjoyed it also, Kathy, and like you didn't figure it out until the end. I call that good mystery writing.

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) Well I have read the book now and this is rare for me but i would have to say that I much preferred the film!

I gave it 5-stars although I was thinking I should give it 4, but my personal rating is: If i would like to read it again it gets 5-stars. So 5-stars it is!

Great book really. I'm glad I nominated it last year so that I ended up reading it ☺️

Kathy E | 2345 comments It was a great choice, Jazzy. My copy was published as part of the Femmes Fatales: Women Write Pulp series from the Feminist Press at the City University of New York.
Bunny Lake is Missing by Evelyn Piper
But my cover is different - bright orange title and bright orange spine. The cover isn't on GR. I think the publisher used the actors from the movie on the cover.

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) Yes Kathy I have the same one. It's out of print on the website now. Nice book. I loved the author description in the back.

Kathy E | 2345 comments It is a nice book. It even feels good to the touch!

message 16: by Jazzy (new)

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) Oh yes and the pages are so gloriously thick and aesthetic!

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) Where did you get yours Kathy? I got mine at the bookshop Waterstone's in the Newcastle city centre. They no longer have any copies left.

message 18: by Kathy (new)

Kathy E | 2345 comments Through Amazon in the U.S. They have a few others from that series available.

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) I will go to the UK site and have a look, thanks!
