Which English Mystery book would you like to read with us during November? This month it is for more recent or contemporary mystery works.

Please place your nominations here. Thanks!

Michaela | 262 comments I nominate The Guilty Ones by Joy Ellis, of the Jackman & Evans series. Good audiobook! ;)

I've added mine :) Could we have a few more nominations please? (One each.)

Pamela Mclaren | 365 comments How about A Finer End by Deborah Crombie? I believe that it is sixth in the series, though ...

message 6: by Susan (new)

Susan | 606 comments I'd like to nominate The Crossing Places by Elly Griffiths.

Added, Susan, thanks.

Sorry Pamela, but Deborah Crombie is American, so not suitable for our group read. You could do a buddy read of it though, as it's set in England - or talk about it in our US thread :)

We need a couple more, and/or secondings please.

We have just 3 choices so far. What English mystery would you like to read with the group next month? Anything published since 1960 please.

message 10: by Adrian (new)

Adrian | 631 comments The Girl for the Gold by C.A.W. Parker published this year.

A golden age detective story with some wonderful twists and turns

It sounds great! Is it only available as an ebook though? I've found two versions, but some members like paper or audio ...

Any more? It's nearly time to set up the poll.

message 13: by Barbara K (new)

Barbara K Well, I've read (and enjoyed) Magpie Murders and The Crossing Place. If we didn't already have a nomination for an Elly Griffiths book I would have suggested The Stranger Diaries. Maybe another month. Another English mystery in my current TBR list is Truth and Lies, the first in the Amy Winter series - but reading the precis it seems as if it might be a bit too grisly for this group. Thoughts?

Now I'm cross! Not from anything here, but because I had a look at the GR page for Truth and Lies, to see what you mean Barbara, and the very second review I read told me what you are clearly not meant to know at the start!! Why do people do this? :(

Yes, it's certainly not cosy, so would be borderline - and the author is Irish. Would you like to nominate the other book, The Stranger Diaries, Barbara? They aren't in the same series, so it would be OK.

message 15: by Barbara K (new)

Barbara K OK, I will nominate The Stranger Diaries by Elly Griffiths. I believe that it won an Edgar this year, but I don't remember the category.

Thank you Barbara. I'll add it.

Barbara - since we didn't have any further nominations, it seems a better idea to keep it back for the next modern poll. Otherwise it splits the vote for Elly Griffiths.

Instead, I've added a twice runner-up. I hope you approve! Please do feel free to suggest this next time we are due for a contemporary mystery though, so The Stranger Diaries is nominated. Thanks!

message 18: by Barbara K (new)

Barbara K No problem, Jean. I've just cast my vote, and I will nominate Stranger Diaries another month. It seems like a good fit for this group.

Thanks!

The poll is posted now, so I'll lock this thread.
