I made the folder "A Place For Buddy Reading" and the topic "Future Joint Adventures" in 2014. This is an updated place, fresh at the top of discussion posts and easier to reference. I think new folders from time to time trims the number of book titles with conversations. I want a current one this time at least.

I am carrying over my happily dwindling proposal list. Please feel welcome adding to it. It is true that I read from my own books at home. There is a good chance I might have what other members propose but it is okay if I am not in some buddy reads. This is your own forum too. Sincerely, Carolyn.

Here is my new list of books to read, in 2020.

Series: Sue Grafton 1, Nevada Barr 1, J.K. Rowling 1 (yes, I am last to indulge), Frances Fyfied 1, 1st solo novel in her name Frances Hegarty, "Half Light", David Handler 4, P.D. James 1, "The Wizard Of Oz".

Patricia Burroughs (pooks) | 2 comments I've been thinking of revisiting Harry Potter. Keep me posted!

The Starless Sea has been on my radar for a long time. I'll try to keep an eye out for when you read that one, too!

As for my own lists--lists don't work for me. They almost do the reverse--I can have several important things that need to be addressed, spend time feeling efficient and like I'm getting things done by making a list for the day--and finding my brain sliding off all of it, and me ending the day having hyper-focused on something totally different. It's an ADD thing, and even meds don't 'cure' that symptom for me!

I have been reading a lot of good YA Fantasy in the past few years if you want any ideas to put on your someday/maybe lists. One question though--Do you mind dark subject matter? Lots of YA stuff is dark. And I guess that should involve letting me know what your turn-offs or triggers are, because there are all different aspects and definitions of dark! I've been leaning in a dark direction myself, which isn't surprising since my own fantasy series is about the dark daughter, the one they hide. LOL

It is nice to hear from you, Patricia! Not one for Kindle or libraries, I draw from the glorious stock I have gathered at home over the years! If it is paranormal, mystery, Canadian, and a broad variety of non-fiction and classics; there is a good chance I own it, Patricia! Everything I list "to-read", I own.

I dislike war, evil, or sad and refuse anything portraying sexual assault or animal harm. I love the magical, mysterious, and quests. Your favourites might appeal to others who have slumbered in our group. :) I don't know a bigger YA fantasy fan than my wonderful young friend, Darce. She doesn't monitor the group but you could certainly visit her.

I have a good mix of fantasy: Daving Eddings, Guy Gavriel Kay (from Winnipeg!), Isaac Asimov, Ursula LeGun, Monica Hughes, Vicki Blum, Jodi McIsaac (all three Canadian).

Lists are fun and handy to make and need never be concrete. Many of mine are pushed back for years. They are nothing more than what I think I am in the mood to read soon. If I change my mind, I do. :)

I will be pleased to let you know about "The Philosopher's Stone" and "The Starless Sea" as they come up. Later this year, since they are hardcovers that I am rather savouring!

Anne Frank, Diary Of A Young Girl is on my to-read list, too. I saw Agatha Christie "Roger Acroyd" in my university library, I can get it by the end of this month. Keep me posted if you want to start these two. Ian Rankin and P.D. James seem cool, and I didn't forget The Angel's Game (The Cemetery of Forgotten Books, #2), I still looking for it.😉

Welcome, Shirin! I am happy you are here! Feel free to add your ideas, or make a folder for yourself in your name. I am glad you have "Anne Frank" and access to "Roger Acroyd". Do you own "Knots & Crosses" (Ian Rankin #1) and "Cover Her Face" (P.D. James #1)? I will read any of these anytime you like. I added "The Angel's Game" in message #3. Three of us are starting the 3rd "Anne Of Green Gables" tonight.

Thanks, Carolyn. I have the epub version of "Knots & Crosses" (an Edinburgh cop, I like to try book set in Scotland) and "Cover Her Face". So we have four books in common to start.:) I hope you will have happy reading, It's how bad I didn't read 2rd book sooner.

Good! Let me know which one you are in the mood for, Shirin. We are still discussing "Anne Of Avonlea" in the folder by its name. We slowed down a lot before Christmas. Then certainly, when I was taking care of our dear Spirit cat full-time; then the hardship of having lost him 3 weeks ago.

Therefore, if you do read the second novel soon, jump in and reply to our conversation.... and the same with "Anne Of The Island" when you are ready. Add to conversations of any books you have read, no matter how long ago our reading or yours.

Dearest Shirin, your care meant a lot, in my update when I made the sad, hard accouncement about our Spirit. Thank you for that. We begin in this community with books. However, many of us become friends and what that really means.

Yes, please jump into any conversation about any books you see here, that you have read. If you read the second and third Lucy Maud Montgomery novels a little later, there is no time limit to coming and speaking your mind, my friend. I am very happy this group has conversations of all kind lately. Animals, plants, music, movies, world news.... anything.

~Group reading proposals~ Kerri, Leeanne, and I are reading "Anne Of The Island" and conversing about "Anne Of Avonlea". Shirin and I discussed in messages #6-8, that we have 4 other books handy to enjoy soon. Patricia, in message #4, is keen to accompany me with the last 2 shown and seeks buddies for dark fantasy. Reply if you will join us. Add anytime to any conversations in our folders, about books you know.

"The Murder Of Roger Ackroyd" Agatha Christie
"The Diary Of A Young Girl" Anne Frank
"Cover Her Face" P.D. James
"Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone" J.K. Rowling
"The Starless Sea" Erin Morgenstern.

I was impressed with Ian Rankin in "Knots & Crosses". Another fine Edinborough author I have planned to read soon is "Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde" because it is a classic referenced often. It turns out Ian's first couple of novels are an ode to it. If anyone has a copy and wants to read it in the next month or two, let me know. It is a short story that will jog along quickly, therefore I would time it with companions to the day.

Me too! Shirin, Leeanne, Patricia and group members: are you interested? It is a short classic that we would want to start on the same day. That gives us a better opportunity for short notes in progress, instead of reviewing a story that we finished.

I would like to be familiar with the famous "Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde" before I read Ian's next novel, "Hide And Seek". He praised the sole reviewer in the 1980s who understood his title. I do not read authors back to back, so it'll be a couple of months before I revisit Ian. But I am ready for Robert Louis Stevenson as soon as we have our roll call.

The full novel, "Treasure Island" is on our list too. :) If you have seen "Journey To The Centre Of The Earth 2" with Dwayne Johnson in place of Brendan Fraser, you might recall a "Vernian" society or fan group, wherein they believe clues in famous novels of a similar time period led to a real island. I need a copy of Jules Verne's "Mysterious Island" but have Robert's full novel, "Treasure Island" waiting. It is on the list of clue novels and is on our proposed join reading list. Feel free to add titles of your own. :)

Good morning, group members! My friend, Shonna runs the Canadian reading theme at her blog with Canada Day, July 1, as the start date. That means we are entering the last month and I see how many more Canadian books I can include. I think I will read Lucy Maud Montgomery's autobiography, "The Alpine Path" in the next week. Please let me know if you have it and are interested in reading along with me.

I ask for prayers for my dear Dad, for cancer surgery this Monday. He is giving up a bladder so that he can continue life on Earth. He has a very good attitude about it. My Mom & dear cat Spirit, are proud of Dad and will watch over him. Your friend, Carolyn.

I hope your Dad's surgery went well and he recovers quickly.

I let you know important stuff in e-mail. Dad came out of surgery okay. Marigold surpassed the doctor's estimate Friday and is all right too! We are going to stay on top of kidney cleansing and assisting food and treatments, paired with energy medicine, accupressure, and prayer. Something is working, thank goodness!

My reading slowed. It is gardening season and suddenly hot. We were 38 C, 100 F on Friday! A little less yesterday. A couple of weeks prior we had -3 C one night. That is Manitoba as spring turns to summer. I have treated myself to a little TV. When I go to bed, usually the only place I read, I just get cozy and sleep. I have most of our flowers to plant, thus this is not the period to sneak in reading by day.

I will get back to my reading roster tonight and know next week when to fit "The Alpine Path". A nice, thin book in the last month of the Canadian reading challenge.

I'm glad it went OK! I've had a busy few days and haven't gotten to my email get, but will soon! Great to hear about Marigold as well!

I hope you are enjoying the weather and the gardening. We of course are getting colder, darker earlier etc, so my reading time is increasing! I've been getting through quite a few books that I've been looking forward to for a while.

I think "The Alpine Path" should be an interesting read. I also have a biography written for children about L.M. Montgomery, and am on the lookout for another biography about her (I can't remember the title right now) but I'm not going to read either of them until I have finished the "Anne" books, and perhaps a few of her others as well.

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) | 1498 comments Mod
Yes I know you are rushing onward. I try not looking at your number so I am not bumbed out by that! I chuckle to myself "Maybe focusing on e-mail will slow her down and allow us to be at an even pace again". I started out with a few more books this year and it is too bad my pace had to drop. But you know the year this has been in more ways than Spirit's ascension in January.

We can start "The Alpine Path" tonight if you like. It is funny, I chose "Bathroom Book Of Cat Trivia" as one of my closing books for the Canadian reading challenge of my friend, Shonna's, that ends this month. I momentarily forgot about Lucy Maud Montgomery and was wondering this morning, what thin book would do well. Haha!

The thin healing one I started last night, "Your Body's Telling You: Love Yourself!" is a manual listing problems. I might ask Shonna if I can count it if I read the written descriptions besides the list of problems, only looking-up a few that pertain to our family. The root causes and advice are repetitive after awhile.

I am replying to the wonderful, personal part in my own group folder. Please find a celebratory entry there!

Shirin & I are shortly going to read "Except The Dying" by English-Canadian, Maureen Jennings. If I understood Kerri's "to read" entry, she has a copy too. I welcome anyone to join us, say next week.

I will certainly finish it this month, before concluding the Canadian reading challenge hosted by my friend, Shonna, who is in this group. The new year opens on Canada Day, July 1st, should any of you wish to hop aboard this time. All you have to do is review and link as many Canadian books as you can, with the target being 13 of them to match our 10 provinces and 3 territories that comprise our country.

They can be by Canadian born or residing authors, set here, or featuring Canadiana in some way. For example, "Back To The Future: The Story" is neither by nor about Canadians. However, it is unforgettably connected to Canadian Michael J. Fox, whom the photo album highlights.

To simply join our buddy read or conversation about "Except The Dying", please watch for a new topic by that name in this "Buddy Reading & Conversations" folder.

Hi Kerri! When did you decide to join Shirin & I and order your first Maureen Jennings book? You had heard of it and marked it to read a year or so ago, so I am pleased. From where do you order? You are in good time, as long as I finish and review my ride along with William Murdoch by June 30. I want to fit in a couple of other Canadian novels on my own that are short and less well-known. Our conversations on any books past and present may certainly exceed it.

I will read Maureen Jennings for next year's Canadian reading theme, starting anew on Canada Day. The cat trivia book is dragging, probably because grief is not a time for jokes or jocularity. I think I would find the presentation random and incomplete at the best of times. I have been craving novels, like the two short youth ones I want to fit into this year's theme. I keep falling asleep a few pages into that boring trivia. How did you hear of a Canadian series? The novels or TV show?

Ron & I have a funeral service to plan and put on today. I must write the best possible words for Marigold, on behalf of McCartney, Angel, Petal as well and for our dear Conan, who did not see him Mom or Spirit again on Earth. That is a shame but Ron & I will do our best to make this uplifting and bright. He is preparing her resting place.

I haven't heard from Shirin about Marigold and am sure she would e-mail support right away, so I re-forwarded our announcement last night. McCartney is yelling for a second serving of breakfast, a happy sign from cats, so I shall indulge him. He is taking the herbs now and accepts it in his food, as well as the broken arthritis supplements. :)

Kerri (kerrisbooks) | 483 comments Mod
I hope your funeral service went well yesterday. I'm sorry that's something you're experiencing again, especially so soon. I am glad to hear that McCartney is feeling happy, and eating all his supplements.

With the Murdoch series, I heard of the books before the show, though I can't remember how. I'm not sure if I'll watch the show because I don't always enjoy watching murder mystery shows, but for whatever reason I enjoy them in book form!

The service was very good: thank you, Kerri. Again, we used the library one-room building, so McCartney, Angel, & Petal were in close quarter attendance with us.

Yes, I have not been able to stand seeing our dearest Spirit's name on a temporary stick marking his resting place; now our dear Marigold rests there too. But it was a beautiful serivce with all of our hearts combined, for her and for us. More personal details for e-mail but thank you for the basic care right here.

You are opposite, hearing of the books. This show is so long-running and present, I can find it any time I turn on the satellite dish. I only indulged once, so I start from the beginning after I have the DVD set. The show I got was very tame, even with charm and a little humour. It is historical fiction, which reduces the shocking things. I shouldn't be as confused as TV fans, that the books have William's romance with a landlady instead of doctor colleague.

I did hear from Shirin: would you believe, half an hour before we held Marigold's service. It felt good and was another boost we needed. I will put this update in its own thread but to be sure you see it, she helped me obtain the "Shipwrecked" PDf and we will start with this one today. If you can do likewise, of course please do join us. Love and gratitude for good friends, Carolyn.

P.S. I hear McCartney giving us the Siamese trumpeting, so it is time to sprinkle arthritis supplement pieces into the second breakfast he is obviously eager to have.

Ladies & Gentlemen of our group, I hope you are well and enjoying summer or winter around the world. Western Canada to Ontario has been in a long heat wave but we are all right. Our prayers and care are for those citizens and animals who were in forest fires; mainly in British Columbia that I know of.

Please add prayers for the families and friends, whose Aboriginal children were buried at former residential schools this year. If we cannot manipulate time to change things for all who suffered by natural or human-made causes, we can protect and respect our people, animals, and land now. Every race, religion, and choice to practice spirituality free of religions (like me), is "our people" equally.

I notice that I recently got a copy of a classic, "The Time Machine". As a dedicated "Back To The Future" fan and also someone who felt the impact of the old film of "The Time Machine" when I was a kid, I would enjoy reading this as a buddy collaboration. Like most classics go it seems, the page quantity is brief. I added it to Message #3, from which I also removed books we have read. Your friend, Carolyn.

Hi Carolyn,

If we cannot manipulate time to change things for all who suffered by natural or human-made causes, we can protect and respect our people, animals, and land now -- I think this is one the best sentences I have read recently that captures what I had been thinking towards the topics you mention in your post. Beautifully put.

I have a copy of "The Time Machine" as well, and would be happy to read it at any time. It's another one of those classic books that I know from a movie version, and references in other books, films, TV etc, but haven't actually read.

I had no doubt you would be game and perhaps other friends. I am glad you haven't read it yet. My impression of the story is that it will be so detailed and poignant, as well as pioneering of numerous stories in the genre to succeed it, that it will be ideal to marvel at with friends. I would love to prioritize this ahead of future proposed stories.

I remember the old fashioned machine seat from my Uncle's favourite film and that the protagonist fell in love with a cavewoman. I remember how odd watching time must look and feel to occupants who don't ride around, like in Emmet Brown's Dolorian. I remember a body turning skeletal on a cave floor as the rider returned to the present. Did his house used to be a cave, or did he move his vehicle? We will see.

Good for you! When you give me dollars without a currency, is that because you are referring to Canadian funds?

I have figured out by rereading this that you were talking about a purchase for yourself. I need an unabridged "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" but am glad you have "Around The World In 80 Days" for yourself. Since my copy includes "Five Weeks In A Balloon" and it is Jules Verne's first novel, I will start there.

I will happily read "The Time Machine" as soon as we are genuinely free to buddy-read actively. My last paragraph in "Under The Dragon's Tail" explains what I mean by that. A conversation stays alive and finishes best if we leave notes daily while reading and converse back & forth afterwards for as long as we wish, with no longer than two days in between each person's responses. Does that make sense to all of you too? Loving this novel better as I suspect we will, I think shall help. :-)

What fodder for conversation a science fiction classic and Mike Fox connection will have! I am happy to read "Anne Of Green Gables" volume IV (you read Roman numerals, right?) as soon as the rest of you wish to. Leeanne is busy in school but I have her e-mail address and will ask her when she expects to be free. Love to you all, Carolyn.

I actually meant NZD, just forgot to specify! I'm still on the lookout for all the other Jules Verne books and will update as I find them. I've come across a couple of second hand copies but abridged - those versions seem to be surprisingly common but I want the full story!

I'll check your paragraph from the "Under the Dragons Tail" discussion, but yes I agree it works best if we are free to write and chat daily and update as we go along. It flows better. I think both "The Time Machine" and the next "Anne" book should be well suited to group discussion - - especially "Anne" because we will be building on our previous discussions.

Good morning to all my friends! I say we read "The Time Machine" the next time everyone interested is free to chat along with it. It is high time I acquaint myself with this giant science fiction reference. A fan of Michael J. Fox would positively delight in it, I should say!

Anyone interested in buddy-reading "The Time Machine", jot down a note about when you expect to have a copy and to be available for a read-along. "Anne Of Green Gables" #4 is on tap anytime folks have a copy and are free too. Your friend, Carolyn.

Thank you, Kerri. I was re-reading of hard dates around June and message #29 got missed. I sometimes separate book topics into a message next to personal updates. That one was pretty poignant, so I think you or Shirin would reply if you saw it.

McCartney has difficulties this week that we are certain are from arthritis. However, positive energy goes into caring for and loving a kitty with mobility or eating challenges. I pray there is relief for him soon. Ron & I hoped not to worry or go into daily energy healing mode for loved-ones this year but thank the good Lord we have this wisdom.

I've just read #29 and think I must have missed it at the time, or at least meant to answer and then got distracted by the message after it. I'm glad the service was good and McCartney, Angel, & Petal were able to be there too. I know how feel about not being able to stand seeing Spirit's name on the marker -- it's a heartbreaking sight.

It's interesting to see the little details about the ways the "Murdoch Mysteries" show differs - I have to say that some of the things make me wonder if I might end up enjoying the show more than the books, especially since the show has so many seasons. I can't remember if I asked this already, but on the show do they solve one mystery per episode or have a bigger one that lasts the season? Either would be interesting but it would be tricky for the writers to come up with so many scenarios if it was one an episode!

I'm sorry to hear that McCartney is having difficulties -- I hope he improves soon. As you say, thankfully you have things you can do to help him and I'm sure he appreciates all the help!

God bless you for all of your kind words and support, Kerri. You were there when we laid Spirit & Marigold to rest a month apart (although thankfully she did not ascend quite so soon after him). Flowers grew quickly for Marigold in the middle of the summer she savoured. Spirit took a spot on a side of Love that already had perennials. It gives brightness to a sad place.

Your well-wishes for McCartney to heal and improve are appreciated with our gratitude. Donna Eden's energy techniques are helping and essential oils to try are on the way.

Which "Murdoch Mysteries" differences are you referring to? I would love to talk about them and can't see what you were replying to. I am going to move discussions to our "Items Of 2022" buddy-reading folder. Let me know which message box in this folder inspired your reply. https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

I'm glad that the flowers grew quickly for Marigold -- it really is incredible how different it can make everything look.

What essential oils are you trying for McCartney?

I think the differences you had mentioned was that his love interest/spouse is different on the show than in the books. I gather there are many other differences as well, which makes sense since it's been going so long. I've seen DVD's of the show on TradeMe, so I'm just keeping an eye out on a finding a reasonably priced copy of the first season.

I'll follow-up on "Murdoch Mysteries" under our 2022 buddy-reading folder and on McCartney in e-mail. He is well. You never know who reads groups. We want private lives out of sight for safety. God bless you for asking about us as always.

This is an old buddy-reading thread. It would be chaotic to follow, if everyone churned out lists. Often, people add "to read" books they do not have. Better to select what interests you one list. It is neatly organized in categories, which I trim every time we finish.

I don't borrow from librairies, download on dial-up internet, or read e-books. I turn to books I have, which proves to offer flexibility and selection. It makes sense for me to keep the list and for folks to see what we have in common.

I have encouraged Kerri, Shirin, Leeanne, and the others to create their own folders so messages meant for someone specific can go directly to them but usually our writings are communal. :) Your hostess, Carolyn, also moderated by Kerri and Shirin.

This is our 2024 buddy reading list. They are books I have in unabridged copies. If some author’s books aren’t shown, I do not have them or am uninterested. I reflect the volumes we are at per author. Please defer to our “Canadian” category ahead of biographies, series, non-fiction, and classics.

This list is from the more recent “Buddy-Reading Suggestions” thread but it is a good idea to add it here, in case this old one is browsed. Sincerely, your hostess, Carolyn.
