Early interactions between Nicola and Beth Adamson were tense. Did they feel strange at the time? Were there any clues that made you think Beth might not be real? When did you begin to suspect, if at all, that she wasn’t?

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3474 comments I didn't think there was a problem with Beth being real until late in story. The relationship felt like real twins who don't see eye to eye but love one another. Not really a good twin and a bad twin but one who has a difficult time dealing with the past, and one who buries the past and moves forward.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) That was an absolutely great twist! I never suspected for a second. Although with hindsight I went back and re-read some of their scenes and there were some clues with the timing of conversations and interactions between the sisters if you looked for it.

Shelby (whiskeygirl75) | 31 comments I like how she wrote that Beth went to the strip club and stated that they let Nicola go, then turned around and went to work later as Nicola. It was a brilliant twist

It took me a while to deal with my unease regarding their interactions. I kept wondering why they continued missing seeing each other. That’s why I began to suspect that one wasn’t real before it was revealed. But! It took me a long time.

I agree, Lisa...it was a spectacular twist.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3474 comments When they were missing each other, I thought that was one of Beth's way to get on Nicola's nerves. When we were kids, my brother went in my room when I wasn't home and moved one of my favorite records. (Records those were the days.) I think that is why it didn't ring any bells for me.

It was a great twist.

I know! The first couple of times I bought. But when it persisted (because I was looking forward to seeing their confrontation), I grew suspicious.

Lynn (ftbooklover) I kind of knew right away or at least suspected. I mentioned in the answer to another question that I've seen this used so much as a plot device that I've become a bit annoyed with it.

Great going Lynn. I never saw it coming at all and had to re-read that chapter to make sure I got it straight.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 1808 comments It's been a while since I read the book, but I recall that around the halfway mark, I thought it was strange that Nicole and Beth were never seen together by other people.

From there it was easy to guess that Beth was dead and Nicola must have MPD. The revenge motive was clear then too.

I’m not sure of the “when” but the same thing occurred to me.

Robin (robinmy) | 2450 comments It was a great twist to the story. I didn't think anything of the fact that we never saw the twins together until Beth went to see the cops and told them to stay away from her and her sister. I thought it was strange that she would do that and I started wondering why the twins were never seen together. I still didn't really figure the whole thing out before it was revealed.
