Greetings readers, if there was any doubt, fall has arrived (at least in Southern Ontario) bringing rain and cool weather that has brought the leaves down). it feels like time to curl up with a book, a tea, a fuzzy blanket, in front of a fire!!

What have you finished? What is next?

Are you reading any of the Giller books?

have a great day!

Story (storyheart) Happy Friday. Definitely autumn here too, Susan.

This week I'm working on two Canlit reads. First up, Ridgerunner. I have high hopes for this one as I loved her Outlander so much but I have to say that 40 pages in, it's not grabbing me. Might be my restless mood though.

Also reading Martha Baillie's The Search for Heinrich Schlögel and quite liking it so far. I'd never heard of Martha Baillie until I read about her on this LitHub list:

Nine Great Canadian Contemporary Writers https://lithub.com/the-best-canadian-...

Has anyone else read anything by her?

Allison ༻hikes the bookwoods༺ (allisonhikesthebookwoods) | 1782 comments Good morning! I haven't started on the Giller shortlist yet, except for the one title I've read already. I like reading spooky books or those about witches in the days leading up to Halloween. I'm a sucker for Halloween. I love it!!

This week I'm reading The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein, which isn't the fantastic retelling I was hoping for. Elizabeth is the protagonist but portrayed as quite a shrewd, nasty person. Not how I saw her at all reading Frankenstein.

My audiobook this week is Magic Lessons and I'm liking it very much.

This week I finished Clyde Fans, which was okay for me. I admired how much work went into the illustrations but the story didn't connect with me as strongly. I also finished Polar Vortex, which I didn't like at all. I found it extremely tiresome.

I also devoured Leave the World Behind, which is shortlisted for the National Book Award. I'm glad I didn't know much about this one before reading it, so I will just say that I thoroughly enjoyed it and leave it at that.

I'm still reading Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents and Halsey Street.

Hi all,

I finished The Answer Is…: Reflections on My Life (not great writing but interesting anecdotes and nice to learn a bit more about Jeopardy), 28 Summers (total beach read but nice to have something a bit lighter).

I also read my first Giller read, How to Pronounce Knife and enjoyed the short stories of adapting to life as an immigrant.

I started Polar Vortex but took a break to read Looking for Alaska - my niece is reading it for Gr 9 English and enjoying it so I thought I would read it so we can talk about it... I am a bit shocked by the sexual content but glad that we can connect about the book.

No plans this weekend other than a couple of local hikes so hoping to get lots of reading done.

We are wrapping up my office read of The Skin We're In: A Year of Black Resistance and Power which led to some amazing discussion and starting the next book which will be Seven Fallen Feathers: Racism, Death, and Hard Truths in a Northern City. it has been great to have the autonomy to run a One Book One West and have over 100 participants learning and reflecting together!

I managed to finish A Time to Kill and audiobook The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. I really enjoyed the latter as it was well written and the audiobook was well narrated.
Currently reading an advance copy of The Lost Apothecary and am enjoying it!

I don't think I will be reading any more Giller shortlist. I read The Glass Hotel and it was just meh for me.

Have a great weekend everyone!
