One of the reasons I was wondering this was-I have two books that I need to re-read in order to read the third book in the trilogy and I didn’t know if I had to add my rereads to my TBR shelf (if that makes sense): I read Angela‘s Ashes a long time ago and I recently read Tis, but Teacher Man is on my TBR shelf. I was going to re-read the first two so that the third one made sense (too much time has gone by in between reading these).

Jessica: It doesn't matter if you have your books marked as TBR on Goodreads--and that is true of any book whether it's a reread or not. All I ask is that the books read for the 2021 Mount TBR have been owned (or pre-ordered) by participants prior to January 1, 2021.

Heidi: You don't have to submit a list. Some people like to have added incentive to read certain books off their TBR piles, so they make a list that they personally want to hold themselves to. You're welcome to just list the books as you read them. And yes, you can post your reviews under your topic to keep track of the steps on your climb.

Just to add my 2 cents worth to Bev's response - while you can put your review in your thread, you don't have to. Some people post reviews, others link to their review here or elsewhere and still others (such as myself) just give a rating without a review. It is up to you how you want to do it.

Yes--indeed. Reviews are not required. You can definitely track your reading any way that suits you.

Yes, indeed!
Yes, indeed!

Sorry I'm getting back to these late (the last half of December was a whirlwind!) I will leave this up to you--and anyone else--if you really ascribe to the idea that once you were married then you share all things ("What's yours is mine and what's mine is yours"), then I'd say, yes, you can count it as owned. Personally, I wouldn't count any of my husband's books as mine or my books as his. We share a lot of things--our cars are definitely "ours" since we're both on the title, for instance. But we definitely don't share our books--I imagine he'd have a huge auction selling off all my vintage mysteries if I leave this world before him. :-)
And--if you use a book from any family member other than a spouse/partner, then it definitely cannot count as owned.

Sheila wrote: "Hi - just a clarification. I have a bind up of 5 books in one (The Complete Father Brown stories). I'm assuming it counts as 5 books?"
Sheila & Jora: Yes--anthologies with more than one book may count for the number of books contained (in this instance five)...provided that you read all five and that all five have been published individually. Sometimes publishers have put together anthologies of previously unpublished works--those would not count separately since they could not have been read separately. Does that make sens?

Yes - thanks Bev.

Amber that's up you. I like to put myself at the level I'm aiming for to try and keep myself on pace to finish. Others like to start small and build. Whatever works best for you!

Yep, there's a Virtual Mount TBR 2021.

Any time, lol! I probably spend too much time reading Goodreads group comments when I should be reading. :D

Rachel--absolutely. It's not necessary to have planned any of your reading (other than for your own personal reasons). As long as they're yours and you haven't counted them before, they can count.

Beautiful, thank you!!!

I don't know of any but that sound like such a cute idea! I would search for mountain stickers.

Definitely a neat idea! I hadn't even thought of that. :-)

I ended up making my own! https://imgur.com/a/kiELzcl
If anyone else wants them I would be happy to send some in an envelope to you (as long as you cover the stamp and print cost).

For me I would count them as "borrowing". I had some Audible Plus titles in "My Library" but recently cancelled Audible. Now all of those titles are no longer available to me. Also, some titles in Audible Plus are removed and no longer available to listen for free (without using a credit). It's a rotating catalog. You can't rely on a specific title always being available in the Plus catalog.

You know, I was leaning towards counting them as "borrowing" and adding them to the Virtual Mount TBR challenge.

But if you've downloaded it, even if they remove it from the catalog, you still have the download? Or is it removed completely from accounts?

If your access is limited so it can't become a part of your permanent library, then Audible would count as borrowing (and would be eligible for the Virtual Mount TBR). If once you download it, it could (if you wanted) stay on your device forever, then it could count here as part of Mount TBR--provided you downloaded it before January 1 of this year.

I didn't download any of the titles, so I can't say about that part. I didn't even check to see if I could download. I suspect even if it is downloaded and you cancel your account they will remove the book.
Possibly for those that just get removed from the Plus list, you will lose them, unless you turn off the Audible app's access to wifi or internet so that the app can't talk to the company.... so maybe?

You're welcome to join in and see how far you can get in the remainder of the year. There will be another round in 2022 (look under "Looking Ahead to 2022" for the link).

I don't use audible and don't know a whole lot about it. But, as mentioned above: If your access is limited so it can't become a part of your permanent library, then Audible would count as borrowing (and would be eligible for the Virtual Mount TBR). I was trying to figure out how to classify the Plus catalog a couple months ago. So once you download it, even if it comes off the Plus catalog the next month, it's yours to keep, they don't take it back, it's a part of your library until/unless you remove the download. I was doing it as "borrowed" this year but next year I'm going to do it as "owned" and include the ones I've downloaded this year towards Mount TBR 2022.
EDIT: I will still be keeping Kindle Unlimited as "borrowed" if only because they cap you at so many borrows (upped to 20 now!) and you HAVE to return them in order to get more. Audible Plus has no cap, I've downloaded like 30 in a month.
Mt. Wycheproof: 6 books from your TBR pile/s (for those who would like to just get a taste of climbing OR who only accumulate small stashes of books)
Pike's Peak: Read 12 books from your TBR pile/s
Mount Blanc: Read 24 books from your TBR pile/s
Mt. Vancounver: Read 36 books from your TBR pile/s
Mt. Ararat: Read 48 books from your TBR pile/s
Mt. Kilimanjaro: Read 60 books from your TBR pile/s
El Toro*: Read 75 books from your TBR pile/s (*aka Cerro El Toro in South America)
Mt. Everest: Read 100 books from your TBR pile/s
Mount Olympus (Mars): Read 150+ books from your TBR pile/s
The Rules:
*To choose a level, open a topic under one of the challenge level folders and name your climb. If you decide to climb higher, just open a new topic in the new level's folder.
*Once you choose your challenge level, you are locked in for at least that many books. You are welcome to voyage further and conquer taller mountains after your commitment is met. All books from lower mountains carry over towards the next peak.
*Challenge runs from January 1 to December 31, 2021
*You may sign up at any time--no matter when you see this challenge. All qualifying books read after January 1st count.
*Books must be owned by you prior to January 1, 2021--items requested or ordered prior to January 1, may count even if they arrive in the new year. No library books~. If you're looking for a library book challenge or one that counts books on your non-owned TBR list, then please see Mount TBR's sister challenge: the Virtual Mount TBR Challenge
~The ONLY exception to the library rule: If you own the book in any form and have a reason to check out a version from the library instead, then you may count it. For example--if you own a hard copy, but are planning on taking a trip where listening to the audio version would be a great way to knock out a book while you drive, then by all means check out the audio version and have a wonderful trip! Please check with me if you have questions.
*Rules for Rereads: Any reread may count, regardless of how long you've owned it, provided you have not counted it for a previous Mount TBR Challenge.
*There is no minimum page number for books read. If it was sold individually as a book, then it counts. Children's books (if owned by you, count. ARCs also count.
*Audiobooks and E-books may count provided they are yours prior to January 1.
*You may count any "currently reading" book that you begin prior to January 1--provided you had 50% or more of the book left to finish when January 1 rolled around. I will trust you all on that. The only exception is if you have participated in Mount TBR in 2020 and were unable to finish the book in time for the final Check-in Post. Then--if you finish the book post-January 1, you may count it as your first step of the new challenge.
*You may count "Did Not Finish" books provided they meet your own standard for such things, you do not plan to ever finish it, and you move it off your mountain [give it away, sell it, remove from e-resources, etc.]. For example, my personal rule (unless it's a very short book) is to give it 100 pages. If I decide I just can't finish it and won't ever, then off the mountain it goes and I count it as a victory--the stack is smaller!
*Books may be used to count for other challenges as well.
*Feel free to submit your list in advance or to tally them as you climb.
***Addendum: Anthologies which contain more than one full-length book may count for the number of books included in the edition--provided that you read all books included AND that the books were published individually at some point. For instance, I own a large number of 3-in-1 Detective club editions. Those editions would count as three separate entries on Mount TBR. Occasionally, publishers put together editions of "previously unpublished works." Those editions would only count as one entry if those works have not been published separately at any time.
