3 stars
I had never heard of Annie Proulx until I came across this book at a book sale. I enjoyed Annie writing style, her way with words and her ability to draw you into a scene is amazing. I just did not care for some of the stories, some of them are are just so depressing, others are so short you just could not get the big picture of things. I did enjoy a couple of stories but even they were so sad. I know life is not always cheerful, ugly things happen and ugly people exist but a whole book filled with short stories with them, is just too much to take for me. I am giving it three stars because of the writing and the fact Annie told stories that are raw and real. I enjoyed the watercolors by William Matthews, they were placed throughout the book, nice touch. Warnings, if you can't handle cursing or same sex relationships, move on, not your book.

I agree. I am going to give her other books a try.

I love her writing, though.
