Greetings everyone and hoping you all have a healthy Halloween!

Have you been reading spooky tales?

Please be sure to check out the threads for the 2021 Secret Sender so that you don’t miss out on the fun of specially chosen books arriving mysteriously at your door! Also sign up foe the Christmas exchange. Thanks to @Allison and @AllisonHikes for keeping us organized!

2021 BINGO has also been posted and thanks you to @AllisonHikes for adding all the helpful links!

Who will be watching the Gillers? I will miss my meet up with @May in Toronto again this year. :(

What have you been reading? What is next??

Have a great day!

Allison ༻hikes the bookwoods༺ (allisonhikesthebookwoods) | 1782 comments Good morning everyone!

I did read some spooky books in the leadup to Halloween, but I stopped recently to finish off the Giller shortlist. My "Halloweenie" titles this year were:
Mexican Gothic
Magic Lessons
The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein
Odd Thomas
The Turn of the Screw
Lincoln in the Bardo

I will definitely be watching the Gillers. I'm currently working on my last two books from the shortlist: How to Pronounce Knife, which is getting on my nerves because the short stories are a bit TOO short, and Ridgerunner, which I'm enjoying but finding I never feel compelled to get back to it. I also listened to Here the Dark: A Novella and Stories and the quality of those stories far exceed How to Pronounce Knife IMO.

Susan | 851 comments Happy Friday! We had an eventful week with Hurricane Zeta coming right through New Orleans. Now I know what a Cat 2 hurricane is like. We lost power for only 12 hours and many others are still out, so we got very lucky.

I didn't intend this but I ended up reading three apocalyptic-type novels in October (Leave the World Behind, Severance, and A Children's Bible), so I guess that counts as spooky reading in a way?

This week I finished Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents. Not a fun book, but interesting and well done. I knew a lot of the info in this book already, but I learned a lot as well. I also finished Spirit Run: A 6,000-Mile Marathon Through North America's Stolen Land, which I liked overall even though I found it a bit disjointed and confusing at times.

I also read A Children's Bible, which I didn't care for. It's shortlisted for the National Book Award and is a biblical allegory and a climate disaster novel and a satire (I think?) all in one. This is the second novel I've read by this author and they were both 2-star reads for me, so I think she's not for me.

I'm currently reading Here the Dark: A Novella and Stories, which I'm enjoying (I just have the novella left to go), and The Big Door Prize, a lighter read set in a small town in the South. Looking forward to the Giller next week!

✿✿✿May | 672 comments Happy Friday and an early Happy Halloween! It will be a Blue Moon tomorrow night, so make sure to keep an eye out for that!

This week I finished The Unhoneymooners, a light romance. I needed that after having read a whole bunch of heavy-duty non-fictions. Also finished the audiobook Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Currently reading a book club read Ties That Tether, which is on the CBC books Fall preview. It is a debut YA novel, set in Toronto and so far I am enjoying it.
Have a great weekend everyone!

Sarah | 386 comments Happy Friday all! I just finished The Handmaid's Tale as my second read (for a bingo square). I read it in my high school English class and remember loving it. I also wanted a refresher b/c I haven't yet read The Testaments and am dying to (so I can now delve into that one!). I am now reading They Left Us Everything: A Memoir and so far enjoying it. I am also reading small bits of White Fragility everyday, needing lots of time to ponder, reflect on my own actions and discuss at the dinner table. It's really fired up the brain cells!

On audio, I finished Red at the Bone, a short one I quite enjoyed. And have just begun Wish You Were Here: A Murdered Girl, a Brother's Quest and the Hunt for a Serial Killer. I've been drawn to true crime of late.

Have a great weekend everyone, and a fun/scary halloween!

Wanda | 767 comments Hello everyone- Hard to believe it is Halloween and November this weekend. I have hit a real reading lull lately which is just not typical for me. I am going to try and kick start my drive again this weekend and get back to Hamnet and Judith as I was loving it until I hit this wall. Change in season I think, the Fall blahs. I hope everyone is healthy and doing well. Lots of diverse reading as always in the group, I enjoy seeing all the suggestions. Take care, Wanda

Petra | 707 comments Happy Halloween, Friday and Weekend everyone!

I've been quiet in the weekly updates because, like Wanda, I've hit a reading slump. I'm slowly working my way through it and reading a few more pages each day (mostly).

In October, I finished 4 books, mostly short ones:
The Sorrows of Young Werther
The Romance of Certain Old Clothes
The Turn of the Screw
The Summer Guest (audio)

All were quite good. I enjoyed them all.

I'm currently reading The Johnstown Flood and listening to The Swerve: How the World Became Modern. After these are finished, I'll be caught up on the books that I was in the midst of when the reading slump hit and be able to start fresh books.
