Landmarks of the World - Neuschwanstein Castle
November 1, 2020 - December 31, 2020
7/7
Tasks
1. Few places on Earth are more reminiscent of storybook illustrations than this castle nestled in the heart of the Bavarian Alps. With its towers and turrets, Neuschwanstein looks like it was plucked right out of one of your favorite fairy tales. In fact, this palace was built by King Ludwig II (known as the “Fairytale King”), in hopes of it being his “happily ever after” place. Today it is the most visited castle in Europe and considered one of the most photographed buildings in the world.
* Read a a book with the words “fairy tale” or the name of a fairy tale character included in its text (Prince Charming on Page 34 "as soon as Prince Charming came along"). Threading My Prayer Rug: One Woman's Journey from Pakistani Muslim to American Muslim| Sabeeha Rehman 11/21/20***

2. The story behind the castle is an interesting one. The king of Bavaria commissioned his cliff-side castle in 1868, just two years after Austria and Bavaria were conquered by Prussia, effectively stripping Ludwig of his powers. Seeking other ways to reaffirm his royalty and to have a place to live out his dreams of being a sovereign king, he hired a theatrical designer to create a medieval castle in the authentic style of the old German knights’ stories. The king, who was a bit eccentric, had romantic notions of being a knight himself and as he became more reclusive his fantasies grew. The majestic two story Throne Room fashioned after the Legendary Grail hall and the proposed “knights’ bath” for ritual bathing vividly displays Ludwig’s obsession.
* Read a book with an eccentric character (Arabella). The Observations | Jane Harris 11/8/20***

3. Ludwig was also a great admirer, friend and supporter of Richard Wagner, the world-renowned composer of German opera. The castle was, in fact, dedicated to the composer and Wagner’s influence is quite tangible in its design features. Many rooms were inspired by Wagner’s characters and include paintings depicting them. The incredible ballroom known as the Singers Hall occupies the entire fourth floor and is covered in murals of Wagner’s operas. Even the castle’s name which literally means “New Swan Castle”, is a reference to Wagner’s opera character, “The Swan Knight”. Though the name was not actually given to the castle until after Ludwig’s death.
* Read a book whose author's initials can be found in SWAN CASTLE: Christmas to the Rescue! | Anne Chase 11/23/20****

4. Although the castle takes inspiration from the middle ages, surprisingly it was fitted with all the newest technologies of the time. There was running hot and cold water and toilets with an automatic flushing system. It also included an electric bell system for servants, telephones, a hot air central heating system and a lift. Unfortunately, due to these ambitious designs and the precarious building site which required the use steam-powered cranes, construction took more than 7 times longer than expected. Ludwig didn’t move in until 12 years later, and the castle was still only partially completed.
* Read a book with both 1 & 2 (in any order) in the total page count. (212 Pages): Christmas at the Lakeside Resort | Susan Schild11/27/20****

5. Soon after moving in, the story of the “Fairytale King” takes a less than happy turn. When foreign lenders attempt to seize the castle, Ludwig II handled the situation poorly which lead the German government to publicly declare him insane. His mysterious death the following year is thought to potentially be suicide, though some speculate that it was assassination. He was found in a lake 55 miles away from his castle. And his psychiatrist, who helped determine his insanity, was found dead with him. His fairy tale ending tragically turned into an unsolved mystery.
* Read a book tagged MYSTERY on it GR homepage: Three Odd Balls | Cindy Blackburn 11/7/20***

6. In order to pay off the king's large debts, the authorities opened the castle to the public as a museum, just 7 weeks after his death. It soon became a popular destination and now receives over a million visitors a year. One of those visitors was Walt Disney and his wife Lillian. Disney was so impressed with the castle that he used it as the model for the Sleeping Beauty Castle, which is the centerpiece of his “Magical Kingdom” theme parks and the iconic logo of Walt Disney Pictures. The castle was also one of the filming locations for the movie, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
* Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in MAGICAL KINGDOM (2 Word Minimum). Killman Creek | Rachel Caine 12/31/20****

7. Despite Ludwig’s grand plans of over 200 rooms, only 14 rooms are currently finished and on view for visitors. On the guided tour, you’ll have access to the cave-like grotto, the king’s bedroom and dressing room, the Throne Room and the Singer’s Hall. One of the highlights beyond the castle’s walls is Marienbrücke, the bridge which hangs over a waterfall and offers the most iconic views and photo opportunities of Neuschwanstein. After your tour, be sure to spend some time exploring the wooden trails around the castle, which provide countless opportunities to admire the surrounding Bavarian Alps.
* Read a book that takes place in a mountain setting: Finding Justice | Kathi Daley 11/3/20***

Unfortunately, due to these ambitious designs and the precarious building site which required the use steam-powered cranes, construction took more than 7 times longer than expected. Disney was so impressed with the castle that he used it as the model for the Sleeping Beauty Castle, which is the centerpiece of his “Magical Kingdom” theme parks and the iconic logo of Walt Disney Pictures. Tasks
* Read a book that is based on a fairy tale or tagged RETELLING on its GR home page OR read a book with the words “fairy tale” or the name of a fairy tale character included in its text (include text).
* Read a book with a character that is a king or a knight OR read a book with an eccentric character (tell us who).
* Read a book where music is important to the plot OR read a book whose author's initials can be found in SWAN CASTLE.

Tasks
* Read a book that is based on a fairy tale or tagged RETELLING on its GR home page OR read a book with the words “fairy tale” or the name of a fairy tale character included in its text (include text).
* Read a book with a character that is a king or a knight OR read a book with an eccentric character (tell us who).
* Read a book where music is important to the plot OR read a book whose author's initials can be found in SWAN CASTLE.
* Read a series book #7 OR read a book with both 1 & 2 (in any order) in the total page count.
* Read a book tagged MYSTERY on it GR homepage OR read a book with a tragic or sad ending.
* Read a book that takes place in a mountain setting OR read a book with a castle, mountain, waterfall or bridge on the cover.
