StarMan (thestarman) | 1942 comments Thanks for putting up the discussion, Vickie Snail :)

I don't read tons of contemporary fiction, but this sounds like a pretty good good book (and has a high GR rating of 4.25 stars).

I think the setting is a small town in Sweden?

Yes, he i Swedish and he has written a bunch of bestsellers and is very popular in Scandinavia. I have never read anything by him, so this will be my first.

I had to place a hold to get the audio version in my library, (11 weeks), so i am reading whenever and joining the discussion then.

I guess i will be reading my bucket list the rest of the year, i have set all the books i want to finish in 2020 as "reading", to twist my arm lol

Pien | 601 comments Never read a book like this before I think, sounds interesting. And my library has this, and many more books of this writer!

Vickie (bookfan4ever) His books have been on my pile for a while. A couple weeks ago I read A Man Called Ove, and oh my gosh, I loved it! Don't normally read this genre much either, but this author is one I'll definitely read. Slowly making my way through his books.😊

Cool, he might become a new favorite, i have sset a goal to read all the adult books of John Boyne, and maybe Fredrik too - love this 😊

Vickie (bookfan4ever) He's definitely becoming a favorite for me! And, yes Aya, that's what I love about our group, we get to discover all sorts of great books and authors from our fellow snails!🥰❤

Ushashi (ushashib) | 63 comments I read A Man Called Ove a few months back as well and absolutely fell in love with Backman's writing. Now I have got such high expectations from all his other books that I'm kind of scared to start them!

I hear ya, but I'm finding that my friends are loving his other books as well, so I'm hopeful.😉

That's great to hear. I am trying to start reading it next week. Hopefully I will have a similar experience too. 😊

Ushashi (ushashib) | 63 comments I just finished it. Absolutely loved the book. Now I am really looking forward to talk about it.

Vickie (bookfan4ever) That's awesome Ushashi! I've been a bit behind but hoping to make up some ground over the next few days.

Vickie (bookfan4ever) Just finished this one tonight and loved it! Some pretty heavy topics, though. Phew! It was tough to read at times.😖 I think I need a day to process it all.

Yes it was tough at times. It wasn't even expected from the way the first 1/3rd was going. It suddenly changed the tone. I think that reflects how an incident like that can suddenly change the tone of peoples' lives too.

Absolutely!

Pien | 601 comments Waiting for lockdown to end, so I can get this one from the library! (Probably somewhere this week)

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

I got myself a membership for books (like Audible) and I am listening to it now.

Vickie (bookfan4ever) Awesome!

Janessa I just started the book this week: my hold at the library finally became available!
By the sounds of the comments, I am not really at the major events yet, but I can already relate to the setting quite a bit. As someone who just moved to small-town northern Canada, it's definitely easy to picture a little Swedish town out in the wilderness and have little going for them beyond hockey dreams. We have plenty of those out this way.
Excited to see how the rest of the book goes; I've only heard good things about Backman's work.

Sue | 41 comments Hi all, just starting it now and looking forward to getting going!

Finished and was not too impressed but it was a good story after all. I wish I was a sports person.

Vickie (bookfan4ever) Sorry this one didn't work for you, Aya.😕
