Beth (bbulow) | 2403 comments November's Book of the Month is Masquerade at Middlecrest Abbey by Abigail Wilson!

GR Summary:
When the widowed Lord Torrington agreed to spy for the crown, he never planned to impersonate a highwayman, let alone rob the wrong carriage. Stranded on the road with an unconscious young woman, he is forced to propose marriage to protect his identity, as well as his dangerous mission.

Trapped by not only the duty to her country but her limited options, Miss Elizabeth Cantrell and her illegitimate son are whisked away to Middlecrest Abbey by none other than the elder brother of her son’s absent father. She is met by Torrington’s beautiful grown daughters, a vicious murderer, and an urgent hunt for the missing intelligence that could turn the war with France. Afraid of what Lord Torrington might do if he learns of her son’s true identity, Elizabeth must remain one step ahead of her fragile heart, her uncertain future, and the relentless mystery person bent on her new family’s ruin.

Katrina Lybbert | 886 comments I am so excited for this read. I had put the e-book on hold at my library but there is still a 6 week wait, so not wanting to miss reading it with everyone this month... I decided to go and get the paper copy from my library. So yay, I can start it right away.

Beth (bbulow) | 2403 comments Katrina, I'm glad you found a copy! She has been one of my favorite author discoveries this year. :D

Beth (bbulow) | 2403 comments Happy weekend, everyone! I'm so sorry, I totally blanked on coming back with questions. Hopefully some of you will have some thoughts on these! :)

1. After so much abandonment in her life, Elizabeth has been conditioned to rely on herself alone. Are there areas of your own life that you feel the same way?

2. Elizabeth puts her son's needs first when she makes the decision to marry Lord Torrington. Would you be able to make the same decision?

3. Elizabeth planned out every step of her future until the carriage accident. Has an incident in your life caused a complete change of plans? How did you deal with it?

4. What type of situation would you have to be in to agree to a marriage of convenience? Or it is something you would consider easily?

5. Elizabeth keeps the name of Isaac's father a secret to protect her son. Have you felt the need to maintain a secret to protect someone else, and how did it affect you?

6. Lord Torrington believed he was unworthy of love or marriage due to his past mistakes. Have you ever felt that way about moments in your past?

7. Elizabeth comes to trust the least likely person she thought she would in Lord Torrington. Has anyone in your life turned out different from what you expected?

8. Would you have handled any decisions Elizabeth made differently? Why or why not?

9. Who do you think grew the most throughout the novel?

Katrina Lybbert | 886 comments It is question # 3 that is really standing out to me right now. I think all of us have had an incident in our lives that caused a complete change of plans. 2020 has been very different. So I can totally relate to that. The best way I have found to deal with it is allowing God in my life. Prayer and scripture study daily bring me peace and hope and the ability to keep enduring.

With question #7 -- I have experienced people who at first meeting were not who they seemed. I have learned that you can never judge a person on just a few acquaintances. Take time to really get to know people and you may find the best friends ever.
