I got a link to this post from Off the Shelf in my email, and thought I'd throw the question out to the group: Which literary sleuth would you trust to solve your murder?

https://offtheshelf.com/2020/11/liter...

have fun with this. I have to give it some thought in my own case. And please, please, PLEASE don't promote your own books.

Scott Stevens The Hardy Boys. Two brains are better than one!

David Freas (quillracer) | 2954 comments Sherlock Holmes is the obvious choice. He could easily think his way to the solution (even if it took a couple shots of cocaine),

My back up would be Spenser. He'd never give up until he had all the answers and could handle anyone trying to stop him.

RJ - Slayer of Trolls (hawk5391yahoocom) Scooby Doo and those meddling kids; they always catch the bad guy.

Bruce | 3119 comments I was going to say Jacques Clouseau, until I saw it was literary.

I would say Sherlock, because of his genius, but I’m going to have to go with Marlowe on this one. He’ll come to some resolution, and then mess things up for a ton of other guilty people.

I was about to say Marlowe but you beat me to it.

Inspector Francis Xavier Flynn
Ellery Queen

Curlyhair | 187 comments I’d want reliable, take no nonsense, carry on until he solves anything, Det Harry Bosch (before he retired) to look into my murder.

Renee (elenarenee) | 182 comments I would like Poirot to solve my murder. I think I would rather be the murderer because I would love to meet Poirot

Katharine | 96 comments Armand Gamache. If he wasn't available, then Poirot's little grey cells would do the trick.

It is fun, isn't it?

message 14: by Bill (new)

Bill It's been mentioned once before, but Phryne Fisher.. She's naughty and dresses so well...

Or Inspector Brunetti, as long as he invited me home for dinner to meet his wonderful wife Paola or let me meet Signora Elletra..

message 15: by W (new)

W It will have to be Miss Marple. But if she is suffering from rheumatism,Sherlock Holmes will be the back up.He,of course, should not be indulging his cocaine habit.

I'm not too fond of Poirot, but as he doesn't seem to have any health problems or bad habits,he would do,too.

message 16: by Monique (new)

Monique | 34 comments Great question. Definitely Harry Bosch because he just wouldn’t stop until he had the truth.

message 17: by Georgia (new)

Georgia | 554 comments I totally agree Monique. I wouldn't want anyone else ,but I think I would consider too, Sherlock Holmes!

Lord Peter Wimsey

Armand Gamache
Ian Rutledge
the Hon. Phryne Fisher
Sherlock Holmes (with or without Mary Russell)
Spenser/Hawk
Brother Cadfael

I asked my husband this question ... first words out of his mouth were Inspector Clouseau.

message 24: by Tara (new)

Tara | 470 comments So hard to choose, but I'm going to throw in a name I haven't seen on the list yet: Sir Roderick Alleyn.

message 25: by Bruce (new)

Bruce | 3119 comments Nancy Oakes, well, Clouseau did solve the murders in A Shot in the Dark, which was based on a Broadway play, although in the original play his name was Paul Sevigne, played by William Shatner. It was changed to Clouseau for the film, after the success of the Pink Panther. Walter Matthau won a Tony for his role as Benjamin Beaurevers. In the film it was changed to Ballon, played by George Sanders. And the play was published, so it is literary in a way.

Great series.

No one wants Lew Archer?

Okay, I'll take Lew. Lew would look into it, find a bunch of ugly stuff under every rock, and after a few coincidences the guilty would be recognized, the end might look somewhat hopeful, and the kids are alright, though probably permanently warped by the surrounding adults and their money-lovin' society. All of this would be tinged with a kind of melancholy, of course, but would take placing in 40% more sunshine than normal where I live in N.Y. Oh, and Lew would do it all in under 300 pages, and most often under 225 (mass-market pb, at that).

Yeah. I'll definitely take Lew.

Jupiter | 336 comments Pendergast!

message 29: by Richard (new)

Richard Schneider | 39 comments Cormoran Strike. He'd solve the crime and be discreet about any private stuff he found. Plus, it would bring him closer to Robin.

message 30: by Kimiko (new)

Kimiko | 88 comments What, other than Miss Marple, no one has listed any female detectives?

Kinsey Milhone
Chief Joanna Brady
Detective Casey Duncan
Dr. Kendra Michaels
Chief of Police Kate Burkholder

just to start with..........

message 31: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn Harry Bosch or Alex Cross

message 32: by Bruce (new)

Bruce | 3119 comments While there’s differences, Marlowe, Spade, Lew Archer, and Kinsey Milhone fall into the hard boiled private eye genre, and all to a degree make it messy and rake up dirt. I’d pretty much settle for any of them to solve my murder.

There’s others I’m probably forgetting or don’t know about.
