From the safety point of view you can now get 'rechargeable flickering electric candles'

When we moved house, I discovered I had a stock of over 200 candles. Some were the nice, smelly ones, others were standard stock in case of a power cut. Others were for... well you get the idea. The time has come to reduce their numbers (I suspect they've been breeding).

Sounds like a plan :-)

2021 – Surely not

We made it! We’ve got past 1984, the millennium doom mongers, and I hope you’ve avoided the virus too. 2021 might be the year for ‘all systems go’. I’m hoping for bags of energy. I’m off to a good start, I’ve published my January blog post on the first day of the month!

How do authors think of an opening line to the first book they write? Until I wrote my first book, I don’t think I ever thought or even cared how they came up with something snappy or enlightening. But first lines of books have become famous. Think of ‘Pride and Prejudice’ or Graham Greene’s ‘Brighton Rock’. (OK, OK, I had to look that up.) Well the blog gives you one idea of how it happens. Rather embarrassing really.

Few authors can nail it in a single sentence but Jane Austen did. It makes you think, it tells you what's to come, and much more.

I had to work a long time to find out how to start my first, because there was already a prologue and several epigraphs to set the tone, but not everyone reads those.

So I dragged a reader into the state of mind of the main character, a woman about to go on a late-night national talk show knowing it will expose the secret she's been keeping for many years - for a good cause.

Thanks - I dump you right in the middle of it - explain later (some in the same scene). But the protagonist is stressed, which seemed a good way to show character.

It strikes me as an excellent way to start.
It also strikes me as in the spirit of Chandler's Law, "When in doubt, have a man come through the door with a gun in his hand."

I hope you’ll take a look at the answers to the question “Why do you write?” Three authors have responded. It’s a bit like saying “What makes you tick?” Let’s see what goes on in their heads!
