Who else is on the spaceship with the girl? What is the girl's job?

The main character reads her mom's journal (her mom is dead under unknown conditions) while navigating the giant spaceship where she lives. The world is dictatorship, ruled by violence and where the people subdivided by class/labor, with different people allowed to travel to different levels of the spaceship.
The journal is quoted at length in the book and it seems to mainly be detailed field notes about the mother's work scientific work on the ship, specifically repairing and maintaining the ship's power source. Towards the end of the book, the main character realizes her mothers journal is written in code. It is includes encoded instructions and a warning. There is an unstable power source at the center of the spaceship that is slowly poisoning everyone. Also, the autocrat of this spaceship world has turned the direction of the ship and is actively steering the ship away from Earth (which is not what they told people). I forgot why. Also, the mother knows about a small ship docked at the top of the spaceship - there's a way to escape and turn back. At the end of the book the girl finds her mother's skeleton there and I think also takes off into space? Can't remember how it ends maybe made that up
Characters:
- The girl has a friend who works in a greenhouse that produces medicines for the ship
- there's another friend who is her main sidekick through most of the story
- main character is in a relationship with ... some guy. Maybe hes a doctor.
