Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Suggestion: Make a copy for yourself. The option to do so is under the File drop down. Kate and I needed to do this to color in squares as we used them.

Please feel free to lock in Main Page Genres. I probably will not acknowledge them as you do so, but that way you'll have them.

Example:

RID for Dressed for Death by Donna Leon:
R-B (Series has an R)
I-B (takes place on an island - Venice)
D-E (double letters)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments On your My Books, Goodreads Authors are shown with an asterisk.

Reminder: To find ratings by other group members, search on the Bookshelf for your book title. Click on "View Group Reviews" on the results page. Only group members will be displayed there. Members do not have to be active members of the group.

As you've probably seen, there will be another year of Goodreads Choice Awards in early December. The Awards list will be updated as soon after the announcement as I can get to it.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments I have some MPG to lock in:

Nordic Noir, for The Exiled

Thriller & Mystery for In Pale Battalions

message 5: by Ed (new)

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments So.... we can use two or more letters for each book I presume?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Ed wrote: "So.... we can use two or more letters for each book I presume?"

All words should be 3 letters or longer. This is a lot like Blackjack where you added up the numbers on the cards, but in this one you make words with the letters.

message 7: by Ed (new)

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments Ahhhhh.... I was misunderstanding.... each book must fit 3 or more squares spelling a word. I was thinking that we had to read multiple books corresponding to a letter to form a word.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments I'm glad you asked and sorry we weren't clearer. For future, you can be assured RwS won't have tasks where you'll need to read more than one book to fulfill the requirement.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments I've edited my post #2 with a sample.

Valerie Brown | 3263 comments Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "I've edited my post #2 with a sample."

Thanks for the example. I didn't understand last night, but I thought maybe it was bc I was tired! ;)

message 11: by Connie (new)

Connie G (connie_g) | 1894 comments Is it OK to use the same 3 or 4 letter word more than once, using different squares?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Connie wrote: "Is it OK to use the same 3 or 4 letter word more than once, using different squares?"

Yes! The restriction is different squares.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Possible strategy: I ensured all 3 letter words and then I looked for squares I had not used that might turn a 3-letter word into a 4-letter one.

message 14: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5271 comments Thanks for the example --- now I've got it! I was thinking of it like you were, Ed;)

message 15: by Rosemary (new)

Rosemary | 4275 comments This is so much fun! :)

Does Great Britain count as an island?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Rosemary wrote: "This is so much fun! :)

Ha! Yes!

message 17: by Rosemary (last edited Nov 15, 2020 11:19AM) (new)

Rosemary | 4275 comments I'd like to lock in:
MPG Romance for You Don't Know Me
MPG Thriller and Mystery for Red Harvest
MPG LGBT for Boyfriend Material
MPG Historical Fiction for The Story of the Lost Child

Also to note that The Critical Path is currently the author's last book (first, last, and only), and I hope it stays that way...

And that Dick Francis is on the Literature Map for Agatha Christie.
https://www.literature-map.com/agatha...

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Nice comment on the last published book, Rosemary. I'll make the same claim for

Washington Black

I think the literature map is pretty stable, but Ruth Rendell is also on the lit map for Christie.

message 19: by Ed (new)

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments For GR Authors.... the link provided also lists nominees.... but you just want winners, correct?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments For Goodreads Choice Awards, just winners. But there is another square for GR authors and all of those work.

Kathleen (itpdx) (itpdx) | 1720 comments L-D says “an author’s last or most recent novel (book)”
Do non-novels qualify?

message 22: by Denise (new)

Denise | 1804 comments Is the next to the last square in column D meant for novels only? I can't figure out why it says "book" in parentheses. Apologies for being dense!

An author's last or most recent novel (book)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments You're both on the same wavelength!

This appears to be one we didn't clean up after we finished brainstorming. We will accept either and not require the "last" to be one or the other. In other words, you may use it for last novel even if a non-fiction/story collection has been published later and vice versa.

message 24: by Denise (new)

Denise | 1804 comments Argh, I didn't see the post before mine. Thanks for the reply!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments No apologies - just proves you two proofed better than I did!

message 26: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah (bekalynn) We still have to read 10 books, right? So in your example, you could make a 7 letter word to go with RID? Or a 4 letter word (WITH ) and a 3 letter word (SLY)? And do we have to can we take letters from multiple words to make just one (DEW)?

message 27: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah (bekalynn) Oh and don’t forget the Plan post please!

message 28: by Bea (last edited Nov 16, 2020 03:48AM) (new)

Bea Published in the teens - any century....please define teens.

Is it only those years with teen in the name of the number 13-19 or is it any year with a 1 as the first number of the two?

I'm particularly wondering in 2011 would work?

My example is just one book. Several seasons back we asked what kinds of things you'd like for sub-challenges and one of the recurring comments was a way to have combos. Think of it this way: You choose a book that fits one of the task squares. Now you have to find at least 2 other squares that fit that book and that will make a word; OR (another way to say it) you choose a task and 2 combo tasks. In this, you don't get to use the combo tasks over again.

Yes, you read 10 books. Your 10 books will be chosen so as to use at least 3 squares where the letters in the rows make a word. Yes, WITH and SLY are possibles. Fortunately "Reading With Style' has a lot of common letters!

Goodreads has now restricted the number of threads one can open in an hour, so things might be slow in coming.

Yes, "teens" are 13-19. No, 2011 won't work for that square.

I'm not sure if you have got it, Rebekah! When we have plan posts, I think you will see how the whole 10 books works.

message 32: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Brown | 3263 comments Taking note here that The Hound of the Baskervilles has an MPG of 'thriller'.

You’re right. I’m slow on catching on, even in school, I would ask for examples in concrete form. ( smile )

message 34: by Rosemary (new)

Rosemary | 4275 comments I think I should also lock in Buried Alive having 172 pages, in case the most popular edition changes

That was my worry. OK...

message 36: by Rebekah (last edited Nov 18, 2020 01:04PM) (new)

Rebekah (bekalynn) Does MPG mean the most popular genre meaning the first one listed on the book’s page or can it be any genre listed on the book’s page?

If latter is true I’d like to Locke in “adventure” for Grandma Gatewood's Walk: The Inspiring Story of the Woman Who Saved the Appalachian Trail

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Rebekah wrote: "Does MPG mean the most popular genre meaning the first one listed on the book’s page or can it be any genre listed on the book’s page?"

MPG means Main Page Genre. You're good with that, Rebekah.

message 38: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 3094 comments May be a stupid question but... just making sure 'YIN' is an acceptable word for this?

message 39: by Bea (new)

Bea Locking in MPG:

Adventure - The Last Wish
Thriller - Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore
Historical Fiction - Mother Earth Father Sky

message 40: by Denise (new)

Denise | 1804 comments I don't see the restriction about using 10 different authors which Blackjack had. I hope I'm not overlooking it?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Tien wrote: "May be a stupid question but... just making sure 'YIN' is an acceptable word for this?"

There are no stupid questions. Yes, to YIN. (I think the Y has interesting applications in this game.)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Denise wrote: "I don't see the restriction about using 10 different authors which Blackjack had. I hope I'm not overlooking it?"

There is no restriction and you may repeat authors.

And it is set at least partly in Alaska, which made me think about you. I thought it was really neat that she took a boat trip along the Alaskan coast. It will be my first book of the new season, and I am looking forward to it!

Mary | 1398 comments Great game! One question though . . .

Can you explain cell D8 Wild Card. How is it used? Can it only be used for a “W” or could you use it for another letter that is not in “reading with style” (say “P”) in the word you are claiming
