Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Yeah, okay, but this isn't the earliest it's ever been done.

Loose goals:

Read more books that I already own. Aim for 80% already-owned reads (or attempted reads - sometimes the slushpile needs manual attention). Library checkouts should be restricted to already in-progress series, because I'd also like to get some of those knocked out too. I also want to read more non-fiction.

Due to the potentially varying nature of this coming year's reading, I think I will set my goal lower, maybe 30, and see how it goes.

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments I would love to re-order the group folders and put this one under 2020 (for now) but not all the folders are listed when I try to edit the folder order. *sigh*

message 8: by Christa, The Renewed (last edited Nov 15, 2020 01:35PM) (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Well. In reply to my ticket about folders not showing in Edit Folders:

"Hi Christa,

Thank you for taking the time to write in about this! We have escalated this issue to our developers so they can take a further look. I've added your report to the developer ticket and I'll be sure to let you know when it's resolved, though at this point there's no timeline for fixing it, unfortunately.

In the meantime, if there's anything else I can help you with, however, please feel free to reach out. I can also recommend visiting Goodreads Help with any additional questions you might have.

Best,
Brian"

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments And so it begins. Thank the Gods that year is over.

message 20: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments I'm starting out the year with back-to-back Murderbot! Currently reading Exit Strategy, and the next book was on sale for 2.99 so I bought it instead of waiting weeks for the library hold.

message 21: by GA (new)

GA (garussell) | 349 comments And Happy New Year to you, Christa!

message 22: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments First book of the year is in the bag. I also realized that I said I would set my goal to 30 but set it to 52 anyway. LOL Oh well.

My plan for back-to-back Murderbot was derailed by a library hold that came in. I actually expected it to never come in, as it was one where the library had run out of loans so it wasn't available at all, but apparently enough people put it on hold to convince the library to re-purchase the license.

message 23: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments Congratulations on completing the first read of the year!

message 24: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Nyssa wrote: "Congratulations on completing the first read of the year!"

Thanks! Took me a few days longer than expected, but I'm not really in any hurry this time around. :D

message 25: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments Exactly.

I'm not either. The only reason I've been able to read so much this week is that I'm waiting for my new job to start, and I managed to hurt my arm (while sleeping, of all things), so I have a lot of rest time.

message 26: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Oh no! I've done that. I managed to mess up my shoulder a year ago while napping. And I was stubborn about resting it so it took ages to get better.

Sleeping can be hazardous apparently.

The sad thing is that this is the second time in my life that this has happened, and I'm not sure when I'll get to a doctor.

I have to take a drug test for the new job, so I don't want to risk using anything for the pain (except lidocaine on my shoulder). Thankfully, I still have my sling from last time, so I'm using that to help take some of the pressure off of it. It's not perfect, but it will have to do.

message 28: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments The sling should help a lot. If I'd made myself a sling, I probably would have healed 3x as fast.

I really hope The Automatic Detective is as good as I want it to be. LOL I really like scifi noir but it's not exactly a common genre so I want every single one to be great to make up for the lack of options. :D

message 29: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments Best Wishes!

message 30: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Thanks! Hope your arm heals quickly!

message 31: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments Thanks. :)

message 32: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments 2021 is shaping up to be the year I don't finish a lot of the books I start... I don't actually have a problem with that, life's too short to read books that I'm not into. But it's a bit disappointing because I really thought I'd like the book but it was just meh. So on to the next thing, which is a horror novel, because those tend to work when I'm feeling fickle. THEN, after that, will be the next Murderbot.

message 33: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments Do you think you'll try the previous book(s) again after resetting w/ the horror novel?

message 34: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Probably not but maybe. I already sent it back to the library so I can check it out again if I get the urge. It was The Automatic Detective. It fell flat for me. But I've also been rather distracted lately so I think it might be harder for stuff to hold my attention than usual. I get that way some times.

I should read some westerns soon. That's all I watch on TV these days so maybe after Murderbot #5 I'll dig into my virtual pile and see what I've got in that area.

message 35: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments Christa wrote: "I've also been rather distracted lately so I think it might be harder for stuff to hold my attention than usual. I get that way some times."

I understand; that's how a lot of books end up back on my TBR pile.
I try to give them a second try, at some point, after I'm able to clear my head. Sometimes it works; other times, it just stays on the pile until I'm ready again.

message 36: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments So The Bank is going on hold at about the halfway point because I just couldn't.

And last night I started reading historical romance. And it seems to be working! So maybe that's what I needed to shove off the slump! Guess we'll see.

message 37: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments My Kindle is somehow marking books as read before I finish them. Seems that when I started reading a different book, it marked The Bank as finished...? Whatever. I fixed it. But weird.

message 38: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments I think that happened to me a couple of weeks ago, as well, except I had already marked the book as read. I started a new one, and the previous one got marked as read a 2nd time.
I'm about to read a short story on it now; I think I'll restart it beforehand - JIC.

message 39: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments I finished a book the other day. Finally! LOL Then I started and dumped two more before finding the next one I actually want to read. Another historical romance.

That last one I read, Holding the Fort, was a clean romance. I didn't know that before I read it. And that's fine, I've no problem with clean romance but I kept waiting for the steamy and there was no steamy. LOL What's funny is that when he actually touched her shoulder I was like "OOOOOOH!" because it was kind of a big deal in the midst of all that modesty and propriety. :D

Nyssa | 1569 comments Christa wrote: "What's funny is that when he actually touched her shoulder I was like "OOOOOOH!" because it was kind of a big deal in the midst of all that modesty and propriety. :D"

LOL!

message 41: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments I finished another book. Yay! I also changed my challenge goal to 15 to reflect my current pace. LOL

message 42: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Finished Burn for Me (Hidden Legacy, #1) by Ilona Andrews . I have the next book in the series on hold at the library but it will be a week or two before it's in. In the meantime, I started A Deal with the Elf King (Married to Magic, #1) by Elise Kova that I picked up on Kindle Unlimited.

message 43: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments I won't jinx myself by saying that I'm over the slump but things are moving along now. LOL

The next book in the Hidden Legacy series came in right before I finished the Elf King book so I started that last night.

message 44: by Christa, The Renewed (last edited Mar 26, 2021 10:17AM) (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Well, 4 books this month so far! Of course, one of those was finished way sooner than it would have been because the power went out late yesterday afternoon and there was literally nothing else to do but lay in bed with my Oasis and read, so yeah. LOL Power came back on by the time I got up this morning, though. Yay for hot coffee!

I started playing Minecraft after literally years of thinking I wouldn't be able to because the pixel look messes with my eyes / brain. Turns out, all that was needed to fix that was a texture pack. So now my life is Minecraft after 10+ years of missing out. :D

Edited to add: Went ahead and bought the next two books in Hidden Legacy because I REALLY want to get into Catalina's story and the library holds are killing me. LOL

message 45: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Updated covers. Is it really June tomorrow? Already??

message 46: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments It's past halfway through July and I'm finally responding. :P

message 47: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments LOL Time flies! :D

message 48: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Updated covers post.

August. Wow.

Thinking about doing a Harry Potter re-read soon. Was watching the movie Jungle with Daniel Radcliffe yesterday, that's probably why it popped into my head. Though I've never seen the HP movies and never plan to because I like the version that I have in my mind from reading the books and I want to keep it.

message 49: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 459 comments Good goal. I'm relistening to the series but with Stephen Fry instead of Jim Dale. I save reading mostly for books that I can't get in audio due to vision issues, so it's just a preference.

I do get it about the movies/books imagery, but mostly can keep them separate. Not always. Some movies were better than the books. Princess Bride is a good example of that (although the screenplay was written by the author, so not so very different).

message 50: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments I can keep them separate for some things, but I think the thing with Harry Potter is the sheer amount of time that I spent with the books fixed the characters and certain scenes in my mind so firmly that anything else looks "wrong". Though I have to say, Alan Rickman as Snape was REALLY close to how I imagined him.

I was a manager at a Regal movie theatre when the movies started coming out, and was still there all the way through Order of the Phoenix, so even though I didn't watch any of the films, I saw all of the posters, and trailers, and stuff. So the actors have bled in a little bit regardless. But the scenes themselves haven't, so I hope to keep it that way. :D
