F.C. Schaefer | 174 comments I read it over the summer, thought it was 2/3rds of a very good book.

I'm currently reading it x3. Also, for a 13-year-old, I would recommend Elevation because it has minimal profanity and no sexual content

Joseph (jsaltal) Cujo ? It has a dog, or would it be too violent?

In my personal opinion, (view spoiler)

Kandice, I would agree with you and say those books would be suitable for that of a 13-year-old.

Definitely The Eyes of the Dragon and The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. I haven't read The Long Walk yet. Great recommendations!

Kandice | 4387 comments The Long Walk is the "heaviest" of the three, but no more so than The Outsider, so I think it's ok and the MC is only 16.

I almost suggested Cujo, but some teens can't "do" animal violence.

Daniele (danielezan) | 24 comments I loved "The Eyes of the Dragon". King wrote it for his daughter Naomi when she was about that age, so why not this one? Otherwise I would probably say "Night Shift" and "The Long Walk"

Laura | 23 comments I read both Cujo and Christine when I just started out with adult books. I remember that I liked them a lot, thought they were cool stories about a mad dog and a posessed car.
I guess that was because I did not understand their meaning fully yet: This year I reread both: I thought Christine was pretty creepy. And I put Cujo down after the first few pages because I don't 'do' animal violence as an adult either. I have always had a problem with that, so no idea how I read it the first time haha.

Joseph (jsaltal) My brother liked Christine when we were young because he liked cars.

Nico (njstrachan) | 3 comments The first one I ever read from him was Needful Things. I was about 11 maybe. My mother had brought it from the library for me, and she used to ask them which books were child-safe...

There was a child collecting baseball cards, and I was in my Pokemon/Yu-Gi-Oh Phase... I don't remember anything too scary, obscene or horrific about it. It made me a fan and it's one of my best book memories.

JD (jdprickett) | 12 comments When I was 13 or so, I read - and fell in love with - The Talisman. I still think it’s perfect for a teen.

That's a good list!
What do you think about, say, "The Body," or "The Lang..."

The Body is a good one, that I forgot. The Langoliers subject may not appeal to someone that age, but it's shorter, so might fit the bill. Gwendy is an excellent one to add to this list.

The other thing about Cujo is that (view spoiler), which you may not want your 13-year-old to encounter.

Even The Eyes of the Dragon has some pretty explicit talk about sex in it. Really, I'd say if one is looking to "shelter" one's 13-year-old in the first place (which for the record I wouldn't and didn't with my two daughters), I'd avoid Stephen King altogether.

message 20: by Kandice (new)

Kandice | 4387 comments I'd like to echo Jerry that when children ask to read something, for the most part, you have to trust them to read it. Mine were all voracious readers and in our experience, when they were too young to care about the sex (titillation, disgust, awe, whatever) it just went over their heads. It's a lot like watching certain movies you loved as a kid and realizing there was a TON of innuendo that you just didn't get.

I didn't remember that about Cujo.

Wyatt | 90 comments I’m thirteen and I think Misery is great, graphic (but Infrequent) violence is the main issue. Basically zero sex and minimal language.
