Part 2 having ended with Roberta's drowning, Part 3 moves abruptly to the investigation. As Clyde, tortured with various regrets, tho not of the seeming right kind - did he slip up somewhere, make a mistake, did he really kill her? (surely he didn't, it was all a terrible accident, he had changed his mind!), are the authorities already after him? - attempts to reassimilate himself into his new 'crowd', the authorities are indeed following the trail and unraveling what actually happened, with somewhat astonishing speed.

It strikes me how similar AAT and Portrait of Dorian Gray are, both centered on a character undergoing great psychological stress as a result of his own deeds. Someone mentioned Crime & Punishment when we were deciding on the Wilde, and I think he's right. It's been interesting reading these side by side.

Erika Kozlowski His lack of conscience is just unbelievable! He questions where he "slipped up" and not ONCE does he ever voice regret Roberta dying. Infuriating!!!
