Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube: Chasing Fear and Finding Home in the Great White North de Blair Braverman

"Love the north? Want to comfortably experience it from afar? This excellent first book is an account of an achingly young person growing into the realities of young-womanhood in all its nuanced harshness, set in situations even harsher - wrestling hungry dogs, negotiating the social hierarchies of frost-bitten mushers and stoic Norwegians. The story is as gentle as a sled ride over rough terrain, but with pitch-perfect dialogue and crisp, unflinching portraits of difficult people and difficult places

Mâna stângă a întunericului de Ursula K. Le Guin

"The Left Hand of Darkness has some of the most chilling descriptions of chilly conditions you'll find in fiction; the reader and poor Genly Ai, who like us comes from a milder planet, very rarely get warm. One Gethenian creation myth begins, "In the beginning, there was nothing but ice and the sun." There are many precise and evocative words for snow: bessa, soft new-fallen snow; esyot, granular snow; neserem, "heavy snowfall on a moderate gale"."

The White South de Hammond Innes.

Ioana Johansson | 67 comments Propunere 1: Owls of the Eastern Ice: A Quest to Find and Save the World's Largest Owl

Despite a wingspan of six feet and a height of over two feet, the Blakiston’s fish owl is highly elusive. They are easiest to find in winter, when their tracks mark the snowy banks of the rivers where they feed. They are also endangered. And so, as Slaght and his devoted team set out to locate the owls, they aim to craft a conservation plan that helps ensure the species’ survival. This quest sends them on all-night monitoring missions in freezing tents, mad dashes across thawing rivers, and free-climbs up rotting trees to check nests for precious eggs. They use cutting-edge tracking technology and improvise ingenious traps. And all along, they must keep watch against a run-in with a bear or an Amur tiger. At the heart of Slaght’s story are the fish owls themselves: cunning hunters, devoted parents, singers of eerie duets, and survivors in a harsh and shrinking habitat.

Through this rare glimpse into the everyday life of a field scientist and conservationist, Owls of the Eastern Ice testifies to the determination and creativity essential to scientific advancement and serves as a powerful reminder of the beauty, strength, and vulnerability of the natural world.

Girl power:)

Sustin: Mana stanga.

Thrudr Propunere I: Dead Mountain: The Untold True Story of the Dyatlov Pass Incident

In February 1959, a group of nine experienced hikers in the Russian Ural Mountains died mysteriously on an elevation known as Dead Mountain. Eerie aspects of the incident—unexplained violent injuries, signs that they cut open and fled the tent without proper clothing or shoes, a strange final photograph taken by one of the hikers, and elevated levels of radiation found on some of their clothes—have led to decades of speculation over what really happened.

Propunere II: The Raven and the Reindeer - A strange, sly retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s "Snow Queen"

Sustinerea I: The Left Hand of Darkness
Sustinerea II: Spinning Silver sau varianta in limba romana Argintul preschimbat

Ramona Z | 6 comments Cred ca revin ca sa propun tot The snow child :D

"Alaska, 1920: a brutal place to homestead, and especially tough for recent arrivals Jack and Mabel. Childless, they are drifting apart--he breaking under the weight of the work of the farm; she crumbling from loneliness and despair. In a moment of levity during the season's first snowfall, they build a child out of snow. The next morning the snow child is gone--but they glimpse a young, blonde-haired girl running through the trees. This little girl, who calls herself Faina, seems to be a child of the woods. She hunts with a red fox at her side, skims lightly across the snow, and somehow survives alone in the Alaskan wilderness. As Jack and Mabel struggle to understand this child who could have stepped from the pages of a fairy tale, they come to love her as their own daughter. But in this beautiful, violent place things are rarely as they appear, and what they eventually learn about Faina will transform all of them."

Catalina Anca | 30 comments Propun The Bear and the Nightingale.

Casselya (casselyaashver) | 10 comments Și eu susțin The Bear and the Nightingale și propun Grădina de iarnă:

Sustin The bear and the nightingale si propun The Bat de Jo Nesbo care este primul roman din seria Harry Hole :

The Bat follows the story of Detective Harry Hole, who travels from Norway to Sydney, Australia, to help investigate the brutal rape and murder of Inger Holter, a young Norwegian woman.
