IGGPPC : Iggle BookWorms discussion

This month we are reading Hogfather by Terry Pratchett, as part of our Jolly December theme. It apparently was also read in December 4 years ago, we must really like it!

It's the fourth book in the Death series, but I think this can work fine as a stand-alone!

"Susan had never hung up a stocking . She'd never put a tooth under her pillow in the serious expectation that a dentally inclined fairy would turn up. It wasn't that her parents didn't believe in such things. They didn't need to believe in them. They know they existed. They just wished they didn't.

There are those who believe and those who don't. Through the ages, superstition has had its uses. Nowhere more so than in the Discworld where it's helped to maintain the status quo. Anything that undermines superstition has to be viewed with some caution. There may be consequences, particularly on the last night of the year when the time is turning. When those consequences turn out to be the end of the world, you need to be prepared. You might even want more standing between you and oblivion than a mere slip of a girl - even if she has looked Death in the face on numerous occasions..."


If you, like me, have never read it before, what do you think when reading this discription? And are you familiair with Discworld and/or Death already or is this your first introduction?

I'll be joining the read after the 11th, as instructed by my Santa this year. ;-)

I am familiair with the Death-character from Discworld, but I haven't read Hogfather yet. Even worse, I didn't know there was a Christmas-story in Discworld. Should have known right?! I'm really curious and if I like it (which I probably do) I can already imagine it being a yearly re-read.

I read this at least every other year in December. It's as close to a holiday tradition as I get. Death is by far my favorite character in the disc world series. And I just love how this book takes some of the classic elements of christmas stories and turns them upside down. Ie the Little Match girl part. Always makes me happy

I've read lots of Discworld/Death books before, but I don't think I'd actually read The Hogfather before! It loved how a lot of the fun and nostalgia was drawn from childhood and children's stories, rather than being super Christmassy. I found the underlying message about the power of the things we believe in really moving, particularly in a year where it feels like everything's quite chaotic and out of control - I especially loved the different ways of interpreting what the sun coming up means. I kind of wish we'd seen more of Teatime, he's a really interesting villain who we don't get to know much!

I've watched the BBC version but this will be my first time reading the book.

I don't know that one. Is it good? Can you share with us after having read the book?

I finally started reading! So far I am about 100 pages in and I really like it. It's actually better than previous Death books, I like Susan! And since this is my first physical copy it's great getting to read the annotations throughout the story instead of in the back of your ebook. :-p
