Maya Amlin (mayaamlin) | 2 comments I am pretty new here so I may be wrong in this, but I checked the group description. Why does it only include books by "Asian-American"? Why not South Asian or Southeast Asian or even South Asian-American?

I hope this just raises a small discussion to clear my doubt and not end up into an argument.

Ardene (booksnpeaches) | 72 comments I am infrequently active here, but my impression is that this group focusses primarily on American authors and I think most likely uses Asian American because it includes Japanese and Chinese and perhaps Indian as well as Southeast Asian Americans.

Are you asking to separate these categories?

Hello Ritika,

Yes, South Asian, Southeast Asian or South Asian-American would all be included under the “People of Color” banner. Those mentioned in parentheses are not all-encompassing they’re just examples of groups we discuss. Hope that answers your question.

Maya Amlin (mayaamlin) | 2 comments Ah thanks, this clears it a lot. I don't necessarily mean to separate the categories, but it's just that South Asian and Southeast Asian literature is very different even if we're just looking at the Asian-Americans; and from what I have often observed, South Asian-Americans are barely ever included in the Asian-American category. (Just a personal experience thing.)

But thank you for clearing this up. I can't wait to start reading with you guys. :)

You are right about the differences, and of course Indian literature is very different, and even between countries in the same parts of Asia (as in South-east) Japanese literature is different than Thai lit, etc, etc.

Given that only 16 percent of the world's population is of European descent, "people of colour" is actually an extremely broad umbrella as it includes so many others, including many Island nations, the Inuit (in Canada it's Inuit, First Nations OR Métis for North American peoples who were here before Europeans, Asians of any type or Africans--I'll stop here. Suffice it to say that terms that are Politically Correct in the US aren't the same as what is PC in all English speaking countries :)

Plus the Australian aboriginals, and last I knew that is the PC term there.
