Opera Hat by Clarence Budington Kelland is a short story that was the basis for an immensely popular and lauded movie Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936), directed by Frank Capra and starring Gary Cooper and Jean Arthur. There is a remake too, Mr. Deeds (2002), with Adam Sandler and Winona Ryder in the main roles.

The story about an ordinary man who inherited a fortune to be then at once besieged by conmen, was published in six installments in The American Magazine in 1935. I am sorry, I found only that one link for reading online. I didn't have luck even with the magazines themselves, they are not all digitalized on Internet Archive. There is a script for the 1936 film available for free reading online, if you would like to check that one: UC Press Ebooks Collections: Six Screenplays by Robert Riskin.
