Lizzy Siddal (Lizzy’s Literary Life) | 302 comments There have been a number of requests to continue the group into 2021. Request granted!

I’ve volunteered to wear the hostess mantel for next year, having enjoyed 2020’s group so much. (Many thanks to Britta and Mel for that.) Plus lockdown seems to be stretching interminably here in the UK, I need a project to stop me dwelling on it.

The question is how do you want to do this?

Would you like to start afresh or shall I just rename the group to Reading German Books and tidy up the folders a bit so that we can continue forever if we are so inclined?

Do you want to repeat the mountain challenge again next year?

What other ideas would you like to incorporate into the group?

Personally I’d like to see more book discussion, so I’ll probably set up some folders for discussion by genre or something along those lines.

What other things would you like to see included in the group?

Please let me know by responding in either English or German.

Alwynne I haven't really thought this through. I'm happy for the group just to be renamed. I don't have any strong feelings about the challenge structure, although I think the mountain format may have helped me focus on reading in this area. I would definitely like more discussion, perhaps more group or buddy reads or themed reads, I did have a sense of all of us reading in parallel at times without making connections, and I'd like to be able to discuss what I'm/other people are reading in greater depth. I can't immediately think of anything else other than to thank you for taking this on, and obviously if you are the sole moderator the structure should be one that doesn't take over your free time!

Penelope | 167 comments This is good news. I do seem to have an ever growing number of books still to read!
To be encouraged to enter into more discussion is a good idea. I seem to do well when involved in a read a long, buddy reads and other encouragements to enhance the experience.
This would be a way to have more connection with each other as Alwynne points out.
I found it hard to find books in translation which were written recently. Some direction there would be good. I especially enjoyed Lizzy’s trip around Germany during German Lit. Month in November. I found the connections made between, authors, titles and areas in Germany enlightening. That sort of guidance would be very welcome.
Overall whatever is decided is the way to go. So glad you are taking this on Lizzy. Thanks

Erin | 64 comments Oh goody! I felt like I missed the boat this year! I somehow managed to read along with Das achte Leben even though I didn't know this group existed! I'd love any sort of 'features' you'd like to add, book discussion, readalongs, challenges, and just participate where I can. Not sure I'll ever manage more than a dozen German books a year, as I also read very widely in English and try to manage an equal number of Spanish books to German... and I have to get through the end of the Erlendur series (Icelandic) and the other half-dozen books I have her translated into German from various other (non-English) languages... but I'm excited to meet other readers of German, and hopefully to discover new books/authors!

H | 13 comments Thanks for continuing the group. I purchased a number of books for the 2020 challenge and would like to work through them and more if possible. I’ve read one more now in 2021. So I’ve started.

MindOverMatter | 1 comments I'd love to join the 2021 challenge and also think that renaming the group each year and keeping a subfolder for each past year would be great.

It may also make sense to say in the introduction that the group is a yearly effort and that past efforts can be found in the forum. :)

Lizzy Siddal (Lizzy’s Literary Life) | 302 comments Welcome to the group.

I’d love to reorganise with subfolders, but goodreads isn’t that flexible. I could rename the existing ones but the urls then change, and folk might lose sight of their previous content. Same happens if I rename the group. Which is why I haven’t done it. If we want to continue next year, I’ll probably start a new group with a folder structure that allows things to continue indefinitely without ongoing maintenance. In the meantime, I will refresh the intro text though.
