Rules have not changed must, only a few changes.

Participation points can be earned in these ways

Get Started
1. Roll over 5 points from 2022 (if you have them)
2. If you are brand new or have been a lurker and want to get started, if you introduce yourself on the Introduce yourself thread; give yourself a 5 points (for new people who did not have 5 points to roll over at the beginning of the year.
3. If you invite someone to join Reading 1001, give yourself a bonus point.
3. BOTM Participation points
--You earn 3 points for reading the book, discussing and reviewing the book. A review can be a one liner, yes it was good. No I hated it. Etc. *Please post your reviews in the folder for 1001 Book Reviews. Please check the index for links, if no link, check “search discussions” to see if anyone else has previously posted a review. If none found, create a new topic.
--If you just discuss the book, but not read it during the month, you get 1 point. We like people to discuss. This would be option if you read it previously but don’t want to reread.
--1 point if you read the book and don't discuss it, 2 points if you read and write a review in the folder for reviews.
3 points: read, discussed reviewed
2 points: read, reviewed
1 point: read
1 pt, Bonus: read, discussed and reviewed both BOTM
5 points if you host a BOTM

BOTM must be read in the month, you have a 5 day grace.

BUDDY READ: if you have read both BOTM and can get at least one person to join you in reading and discussing that book. You must moderate the book yourself.
Creator of the buddy read gets 3 points for reading, discussing reviewing and 1 point for each person that joins them, completes the book and discusses the book and writes a review.
Buddies earn 3 points for reading, discussing and reviewing just like they do for BOTM.

4. QUARTERLY: 12 points for reading, discussing, reviewing
12 points for reading, discussing and reviewing Quarterly BOTM
6 points if you read, review but don’t discuss
3 points if you read the book only
3 points if you previously read the book, but you participate in the discussion.
10 points if you moderate a quarterly book

If you have read a quarterly selection but still want to do a quarterly read option
You can choose to moderate, you will earn more points than if you read the book or
You can opt to read a previous quarterly read and participate in the discussion (see past Quarterly Reads), you will earn the 12 points for reading, discussing and reviewing.

Annual: - 14 points per quarter, for reading and discussing/answering the quarterly questions
- 7 points per quarter if you read and post a final review but don’t discuss
- 3 points per quarter if you read only, but don't post a final review and don't discuss
- 7 points per quarter if you have previously read the book, but you participate in the discussion
- 4 points for posting a final review
So, full participation will reward you with a total of 4 X 14 + 4 = 60 points.

BONUS POINTS:
24 points if you read all the BOTM choices 24 books (can substitute Buddy read)
15 points for reading all the quarterly reads. 4 books (can use alternate Past Qrtly)

Other ways to earn points
TBR takedown, see rules
Randomizer list: see changes under Randomized list, no pts for generating a list. the first book read from the list will get you 5 points and then all books after that follow earned pts the old way. See rules.

Hosting: 5 pts for BOTM, 10 points for Quarterly, 15 pts for hosting annual read.

Others: Must review the book to earn points
A book under 150 pages: 1 point
Books between 151 and 599, 2 points
Books between 600 to 1000, 3 points
>1000, 4 points
If you read a previous BOTM, Quarterly Read, Annual Read you can take a bonus point of 5 points if you read, participate in discussion (see past threads) and review.

Challenges (see individual challenges for details)

Rules
You must read a book within the designated time period. BUT-- you can go 5 days over the time, to read, discuss and participate.

Newbie rule: a newbie can read back and catch up on anything prior to their date of joining the group. If you joined in March, you can read January and February BOTM, Quarterly and annual. If you joined in February but just lurcked around until July. The start date remains February. (Make Sense?) Excluded is the TBR takedown, you are invited to make a TBR takedown list and leave blank the numbers that were previously drawn.

Confusing? I hope not. Happy Reading!

Hi Kristel - slight correct to the Randomised Points as these have changed this year to encourage people to actually read from the list generated.

Generating a list no longer gets you any points instead the first book read from the list will get you 5 points and then all books after that follow the old rules :)

I've updated the above. It did need some fine tuning thanks for catching my attention.

Amanda Dawn | 1679 comments sounds good. Just want to verify, since i've read the annual for this year, can I still read a previous annual (I'm doing Remembrance of Things Past) and discuss it for annual points?

And to double check the phrasing: if you read the annual each month and complete it, do you get 60 points + 1 point per discussion, or 120 pts + discussion points?

60 pts plus 1 pt for each discussion response made by the reader. Yes, I believe I left in the ability to read past quarterly and annuals for those that have read the ones already chosen.

Rosemary | 717 comments I read about half of a 600+ page book last year (mostly before I joined the group) and half this year. If I post a review, do I get any points for that? Or does it not count because I didn't read all of it this year?

I would count the balance of pages that you read this year and work out what points that gives you for an "other" book that way what you have read this year is acknowledged :)

Dianne | 225 comments I'm starting the annual read now -how does that work from a points perspective? How much do I read per month, or does it matter? Thanks!

Annual: take 1 pt for each discussion entry you make while reading the annual book. Take 5 pts for each month you complete which would be a total of 60 pts for completing the annual read. For the two that have read this, yes you can substitute a past annual read if you read, discuss and review.

Rosemary | 717 comments Are there points for the Bingo, or is that just for fun?

Bingo is just for fun but you can use these points for bingo books.
A book under 150 pages: 1 point
Books between 151 and 599, 2 points
Books between 600 to 1000, 3 points
>1000, 4 points

Rosemary | 717 comments I read just book 1 of Amadis of Gaul. From the number of hours on Librivox, I'm sure it's over 300 pages. Can I claim it as a BOTM read, or would we have to read all 4 books?

Hi Rosemary you can claim 3 points for BOTM regardless of how many volumes you read. It was unclear which volumes made the list. Happy Holidays!
