Well, my fellow mountaineers, our 2020 climbing expedition is coming to a close and it's time to get ready for the Final Mountaineering Checkpoint. Considering how 2020 seemed to go on forever, it's still hard to believe that our current trek is almost over. I'm ready to hear how all our mountain-climbing team members have done out there on Pike's Peak, Mt. Ararat, Mt. Everest....whichever peak you've chosen. Checkpoint participation is absolutely voluntary and is not considered necessary for challenge completion.

For those who would like to participate in this checkpoint, I'd like you to at least complete the first of these two things. And if you feel particularly inspired (or generous about humoring me during the holiday season), then please do both.

1. Tell us how many miles you made it up your mountain (# of books read). If you've planted your flag on the peak, then tell us, take a selfie, and celebrate (and wave!). Even if you were especially athletic and have been sitting atop your mountain for months, please check back in and remind us how quickly you sprinted up that trail. And feel free to tell us about any particularly exciting book adventures you've had along the way.

I managed to complete my original goal and planted my flag on the top of Mount Everest back in November. So, I hopped in a space ship and headed for Mars. Right now I'm caught up on reviews and have knocked 118 books off the TBR stacks. I might claim one or two more before the ball drops on New Year's Eve, but I'm not counting on it.

2. The Words to the Wise According to Mount TBR: Using the titles of the books you read this year, see how many of the familiar proverbs and sayings below you can complete with a book read on your journey up the Mountain. Feel free to add/subtract a word or two to help them make sense. I have given my titles as examples:

A stitch in time...[saves] The Shadowy Third
Don't count your chickens...[before] Betsy and Tacy Go Downtown
A penny saved is.... (a) Golden Rain
All good things must come... (to) Partners in Crime
When in Rome... Look Your Last
All that glitters is not... Silver Wings For Vicki
A picture is worth... The Gimmel Flask
When the going gets tough, the tough get... Bound to Murder
Two wrongs don't make... A Halo for Nobody
The pen is mightier than.... The Hound of Death
The squeaky wheel gets... What Remains of Heaven
Hope for the best, but prepare for... Something the Cat Dragged in
Birds of a feather flock... Where Shadows Dance

And what do you get for all that hard work? The Checkpoint will close at 11:59 pm on Saturday, January 9. On Sunday I will crank up the Custom Random Number Generator and pick a winning climber. He or she will have the chance to add to their TBR stack via my gently-used book vault (prize list will be sent). This prize may be included in your 2021 TBR climb.

Even if you're not in the mood for a prize or if you got distracted by pretty scenery or side trails (library books or what-have-you), I'd love to have you check in and tell us how your 2020 mountain climb went!

Hilary (A Wytch's Book Review) (knyttwytch) | 94 comments I got to the top of Olympus yesterday and forget the selfie I am currently lying down and panting with exhaustion!

Sam (aramsamsam) 1. Tell us how many miles you made it up your mountain:
My trip up Pike's Peak has not been athletic at all. I reached the top panting. A shaky selfie was taken, but I don't look too happy on it. While climbing, a new mountain was materializing on my shelf - and there I thought I was on a trip to conquer the tbr! What with one thing and another, the year has been all kinds of busy and boring at the same time and not normal for any of us, I guess. So I will make a new attempt in 2021.

My favourite views were Doomsday Book and Goodbye to Berlin. Both are highly recommended. I read the former during the first lockdown, without prior knowledge of its leitmotif, epidemics. There even were some asides on how toilet paper became a rarity. How clairvoyant!

2. The Words to the Wise According to Mount TBR:
The squeaky wheel gets... Suspicion
When in Rome... (say) Goodbye to Berlin
Don't count your chickens...[before] We Need New Names
Birds of a feather flock... (to) The Jews' Beech

When the going gets tough, the tough get... The New Sorrows of Young W.
A penny saved is.... (a) Catch-22

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) 1. Tell us how many miles you made it up your mountain:
My original goal was El Toro and I summitted it in June! So I headed for Mt. Everest and by the time October ended I summitted that as well! I chose to languish atop Everest and have achieved 113 books but I've got one more to read before we hit midnight on December 31 so I will be at 114.

message 5: by Holland (new)

Holland Vande Krol For my first climb, I set the lofty goal of Mt Vancouver, but was distracted by many side trails along the way, such as Goodreads giveaways and graphic novels from the library, climbing only 83% of the mountain.

Charlotte Igelkott | 6 comments 1. I set out for Pike's Peak in January, full of good intentions, but somehow only made it a little less than halfway to the top (5 books out of 12). Then again, two of those were chunkster non-fictions and most of them had been sitting on my shelves for a very long time, so not a complete failure after all.
My favourite among the five is Inkheart (I only wish I could have read it when I was 11 or 12, when I would probably have liked it even better).

message 7: by Gabriella (new)

Gabriella | 15 comments 1. I started from the bottom at Pike's Peak with 12 books and worked my way up until El Toro, but then a reading slump started in October when I was missing only three books to get to 75, and I haven't picked up one of my books since. I'm still happy that I got to read 72 books I had bought until 2019, and then 24 more I bought this year. Can't wait to see how much I'll read in 2021.

I made my original mountain (Kilimanjaro) by March, I think. I ended up with 200 books off the mountain by October, and indeed eliminating my mountain altogether. I mean, that's changed now, but...

Jamie Barringer (Ravenmount) (ravenmount) 1. I ought to have reached the top of Everest, but....(insert excuses here). I am at 76 now, and by the end of the year, in a couple days, I will be at 77, maybe even 78, but not at the top. I got started on a few series of audiobooks that happen to be on youtube, and of course those are not books I own. So, I am nearly done reading all of JG Ballard's novels, about halfway through all of Philip K. Dick's novels, and partway through several series by Simon Brett. I've also been thoroughly enjoying the Napoleon Bonaparte series by Arthur W. Upfield (Aussie classic murder mysteries, same era as Christie and Marsh, with a non-white super-sleuth inspector). But I won't make it to the top of my mountain this year. Oh well.

Linda (rudylkr) | 86 comments 1.
This was my first climb so I set the bar low with Mt. Vancouver which I hit the top of on 5/26/20. I then continued the climb up Mt. Ararat, hitting the top on 7/22/20. This let me climb even higher on Mt. Kilimanjaro and I was able to get to the top of it on 10/7/20. I continued the climb up El Toro but December was not kind to books I owned so I only managed 70/75 books. Still not bad for the first climb.

message 12: by Meg (new)

Meg Hendry I reached the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro with 60 books after taking several side detours. There were a few books that I bought this year and so didn't count toward the total, as well as lots of library books. There's already another stack for next year's Mount TBR, so I'll be back next year.

message 15: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn Watters | 14 comments I picked Mount Blanc and thought it would be fairly easy for me but I was hit by an avalanche in March when my children came home for Spring Break and didn't return to school until August. Usually I can get reading done in the summer while they work on their library reading challenges but it turns out that earning virtual badges in not nearly as much of an incentive for reading as free tickets to a baseball game and a party at the local waterpark. I didn't take a selfie, sorry.

message 16: by Steven (new)

Steven (wyldemusick) | 169 comments Flag finally planted a couple of feet over Olympus, with 152 books read out of the various TBR piles, the last with nine minutes to spare.

Honestly, I feel I should have been further along than my overall 210 total for the year, but I had unaccountable slowdowns, including one when I was in hospital last January (I spent my time catching up on TV.)

message 17: by Elena (new)

Conny 1. I reached the peak of El Toro late in the afternoon on 12/30; I've never had such a close call! But I planted my flag and enjoyed the view and then climbed all the way down only tostartover today.
I actually only rated two book under 3 stars the entire year, so it's been a very pleasant reading experience throughout. My final tally was 108 books read, 77 of which I knocked off the TBR.

Bethea Scovic (bethea) | 7 comments I made it to the top of Mt. Ararat with a 48 mile climb! I took 4 extra miles worth of side trails with reads that didn't count, so I barely made it to the top. I planted my flag and am viewing the scenery. I forgot to bring my camera, so I'm taking a mental picture. I saw other mountains that were a lot bigger in the distance, so I've set my sights on Mt. message 23: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (dgrachel) | 14 comments I made it to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro with an extra book as the cherry on top (61 total). It was a real sprint at the end and I wasn’t sure I’d make it. I was very deliberate in planning out what to read in December, so nine out of the twelve books I read counted. I even managed to knock off a couple freebie Kindle titles I’ve had languishing in my Kindle library for YEARS.

message 24: by KeenReader (new)

KeenReader I aimed for Mt Ararat, but I went through strange period in the second half of the year when I just couldn't read. So I only got 21 steps up the mountain this year. Never mind, I'm not giving up, I'm aiming at Mt Vancouver for 2021.

It's the best I've done ever, and it make the journey even sweeter as I resisted getting too many new books so my net gain/loss was -2. First time my mountain has not grown! Nikki (nikki_framke) | 21 comments 1. I was able to make it all the way up my Mt. Ararat climb. I struggled in the beginning and at the end, also including some DNF books. Overall I averaged about 50 books, though I feel I cheated on some...so I would disqualify myself from winning any prizes, but I did at least manage to get through some of my personal library. My most surprising read I ended up really enjoying was Carry On.

Well done everyone! Thanks so much for climbing along with me in 2020--it was a rough year all round. I'm sorry to be a little late with the prize drawing, but the end of last week really threw me (and everyone here in the US) for a loop.

I finally revved up the Custom Random Number Generator and convinced it to choose a prize winner....and our winner is...Comment #9 Jamie! Congratulations, Jamie! I'll be sending you a message soon.

See you over on the 2021 mountain range!
