Stephanie (stephanie-somanybooks) | 719 comments This is a new challenge for 2021. I hope you guys like it, Connie and I based it on Cathy's "Book Ladder" idea and we're really excited to try it. I'm sure there will be questions so please feel free to ask. Basically, you will start with a book of your choice, and then the next book in the chain can be related to the Author Name OR the Book Title. You continue to add links to the chain until the end of the year. The reader with the most books in their chain wins!

For example, I start with "The Stand" by Stephen King, and my next book is "Major Pettigrew's Last Stand" by Helen Simonson. Then I read "Helen of Troy" by Margaret George, and then "Curious George by H. H. Rey. Then I add "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and so on until the end of the year.

We came up with a few rules and I'm sure there will be some new ones added as we work through it:

1. You can add to the top or the bottom of the chain but not the middle.
2. You cannot re-order the chain after you've added a book to it.
3. The linking word or author may be used more than once in the chain but not consecutively, so no chaining of the same author name or series title.
4. You can use the same author or word more than once in the challenge, just not over and over again.
5. We will accept a pluralized word as a linking word, i.e. Baby, followed by Babies. We will also accept variations of the same verb, i.e. Runs and Ran or Running.
6. Common words cannot be used as a link in the chain (i.e., "the", "and", "with", etc.)
7. Books can also be used as points in annual challenges or monthly challenges.
8. ANY book read in 2021 can be used as a link in the chain, as long as you follow the other rules about adding to the chain.

We hope you like this one, and as always, let us know if you have questions or suggestions to make the challenge more fun!

This sounds fun! Can we go back to earlier, unused books if we find they fit our chain, or is it strictly in the order we read them?

Upon discussion, we have decided that ANY book read in 2021 can be used as a link in the chain, as long as you follow the other rules about adding to the chain. I will add above to the rules.
