Pat the Book Goblin | 687 comments The Worm Ouroboros by ER Eddison is a heroic high fantasy novel first published in 1922. The book describes the protracted war between the domineering King Gorice of Witchland and the Lords of Demonland in an imaginary world that appears mainly medieval and partly reminiscent of Norse sagas.

Enjoy!!

I started this. Wow, the language is difficult! The book's a hundred years old but he was writing like it was hundreds of years older.

That’s good to know. Thanks, Book Nerd. I’m planning to try fitting this in for January.

Pat the Book Goblin | 687 comments I really enjoyed this one!

Mikiko (mikikoschot) | 52 comments I'm listening to this while reading and it has me already by the background info and introduction.
Enjoying it and think it will make my drive to work tomorrow morning (05:30) more bearable.

God these are some looong paragraphs.
And there's endless descriptions of clothes but I want to know what witches, imp, goblins, pixies, etc look like. All we really know is that demons do in fact have horns.

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) I'm about 1/3 of the way into it, really sweet! I like the name Spitfire.

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) Finished it last night! I never heard of it before so many thanks for recommending it Patrick!

Pat the Book Goblin | 687 comments You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed it!

Emma Ruppell | 31 comments I've joined in. Quirky, it is definitely quirky. I read the All Souls trilogy last year, this could be a (distant) origin of some of the premise maybe? Just introduced to the second lady character, they seem promising enough.

I decided to save this book for another time, when I'm in the mood for fantasy.
Right now I am on a vintage mystery reading binge.

Emma Ruppell | 31 comments Ok now the demons are mountaineers! That was unexpected.

message 15: by Annette (new)

Annette | 234 comments I tried but I’m failed to get engaged by this book. Maybe another time.

It's better to stop if you're not in the mood for a certain type of book, Annette.

I agree, Rosemarie. Annette, you can always come back to it later and if you don’t, that’s okay, too.

I definitely plan to read this soon, but I cannot say how soon. I did buy a cheap ebook copy of it, though, so I’m ready whenever.

Pat the Book Goblin | 687 comments The story can be tiresome at times. It's a very important work of fantasy that was published before Lord of the Rings. Tolkien gets credit for being the grandfather of fantasy but it's interesting to read fantasy books that came out before the Hobbit.

Mikiko (mikikoschot) | 52 comments Patrick,
I'm not really familiar with the history of fantasy writing and haven't read any epic fantasy novels that were written before Tolkien so thank you for recommending this.
