4 stars

Maisie Dobbs is the first in a mystery series set in the early 20th century about a woman detective in England. This first book sets the stage for the reader by introducing Maisie and giving her detailed backstory. While there is a mystery in this book, the main part of the book tells the story of Maisie's life and how she came to be detective. The book takes place during World War I and the themes of the story touch upon PTSD and the horrors of war once the soldiers return. I found the characters in the book interesting and I enjoyed the historical setting. I am looking forward to reading more of the books in the series now that we know who the characters are and how they got there.

Robin P | 5760 comments i like this series a lot. There is a point about a dozen books in where it seems to lose its way but it gets back on track later.

When I read books set in England/Europe during this time, I always feel concern for the characters (even though I know they aren't real!) that they got through this awful war but they and their children will have to endure a worse one in 20 years.

Ellen | 3515 comments I so love Maisie Dobbs! I've read nearly all of them; not all are stellar but I've enjoyed the series very much.

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments I've only read the first two in this series, but always mean to get back to it. They always have a good mix of learning in the historical fiction element.
