Sandy B (sbenemer) | 161 comments Incredible account of renowned psychiatrist’s survival in four separate Concentration Camps in WWII, and the internal emotions and behaviors he relies upon to carry him through the war. Atrocities are described candidly but not in gratuitous fashion. The author, Victor Frankl’s, persistent optimism and indefatigable qualities shine through the entirety of the account. The second part of the book is an academic treatise on his chosen specialty, logotherapy (a tactic using existential analysis vs looking to the past to help patients overcome emotional problems). Unfortunately, it was dry and dull. The first part is worth everyone reading on a standalone basis to uncover strategies for finding life’s meaning, even in the most desolate of circumstances. An important, timeless book. 4/5 stars only because of the dry academic part.
