Annalisa | 1659 comments Hi Team Back to the Future!

I’m really looking forward to playing UNO with all of you. I’m going to be sending out friend requests to all of you. Please accept those it makes it a lot easier for me to check your books throughout the month. You may also want to send friend requests to the rest of the team as it will make it much easier to find reverse cards.

Please introduce your self in your first post. Let us know if this is your first time playing UNO or if you have played before, where you are from, and what you genres you enjoy reading. You can also post a few favorite reads and if you feel like it the worst book you read last year. (I always find it really interesting to see what people hate.) Also, somewhere in that post please post a link to your Uno shelf.

Hi team, I’m Annalisa. This is my fifth year playing UNO and my first year as a team captain. I have been a co-captain the last three years. I’m from The mountains of Western North Carolina in the US. I enjoy reading historical romance, fantasy, science fiction, romance, historical fiction, and I’m pretty much willing to read any genre although I’m not much for horror.

My least favorite read from last year was The Business of the 21st Century by Robert T. Kiyosaki

My favorites were Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston , Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall , The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune , and The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry (Harold Fry, #1) by Rachel Joyce (the edition I listened to had a green cover)

Sunny (Jupiter's Solo Bibliophile) (bibliophilefromjupiter) | 33 comments Hey team! Your co-captain Sunny this side! I'm from Delhi, India and this is my second year of UNO (after 2019) and first as a co-captain. I love reading all genres except horror, but somewhere my heart lies more with children's books!

Looking forward to an amazing bookish game with you all!

Komal (komalm) | 163 comments Hi all - this is Komal. I'm from India. This is fourth time, me playing UNO.

Over the years, I have realized that even in a game like UNO, it is more important to enjoy the process, and the books we read. So I try to map what I have to read towards a card with my likes and preferences. Have fun guys!

My least fav of 2020 (although I love fantasy) : A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #1) by Sarah J. Maas

Please don't hate me if this is somebody's favorite! :)

My most loved books of 2020 :

A cute little boy's conversations with a writer : Dear Mr. Henshaw (Leigh Botts, #1) by Beverly Cleary

It's in the name - dark - packed with complicated emotions : My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell

Oh, boy! I love the chills in Jo Nesbo's books : The Son by Jo Nesbø

Who can not love a classic suspense : Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

and Bran San is the God of Fantasy! Warbreaker (Warbreaker, #1) by Brandon Sanderson

Annalisa | 1659 comments Welcome Melissa, Faith, Sunny and Komal.

Faith if you have any questions please let us know. I remember how confusing UNO was the first time I played.

Komal read Court of Thorn and Roses years ago and I was very disappointed. You are not alone in you opinion.

I’m really excited to get to know all of you as we play uno!

Elise F (elise_literaryhabitat) | 33 comments Hi team!
I'm Elise from Sydney, Australia. I haven't played UNO for a few years, but I've previously captained a few teams.
I read pretty widely, but not a lot of romance or horror.
I had a look through my reads for last year - I didn't read as much as normal as I had a baby! A lot of rereads! I loved House of Earth and Blood.

Here's my Uno shelf

Reading is a passion of mine. I love escaping to a different world with the first page of every new book I've read. I'm from New Jersey and my favorite genres are YA and mystery/thriller. I'm not huge on romance but I can use a little love sometimes.

Shay Hi everyone! This will be my first time playing UNO, but I'm so excited!
I'm still figuring out what I like to read (I thought it was YA, but I haven't been enjoying it very much), but I've been leaning towards mysteries and a whole lotta nonfiction & essay collections.
My favorite books last year were Utopia For Realists, Atomic Habits, and The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle.
My least favorite was a cozy mystery called Tart of Darkness.

Michael McMahan (mcmahamg) | 55 comments Hello! Sorry for being a bit late, was away from the computer for a few days.

Little bit about myself...I am a high school math teacher at a very small school in southeastern Oklahoma, and had a daughter last year, which was of course the best time ever to have one! I really got into board games during last year, went from owning around 10 or so, to closing in on 100 now. Those, reading and, of course, helping to take care of a new born made for a very jam-packed 2020 for me.

This is my second time doing UNO, and had a lot of fun with it last year. Read a lot of books because of the reverse cards that I ended up loving!

My least favorite book from last year was:

The Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel (not a horrible book, just highly disappointed)

My favorite books from 2020 were:

Lady of the Lake (The Witcher, #5) by Andrzej Sapkowski

The Vanished Birds by Simon Jimenez

Me by Elton John

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab

My UNO shelf is https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

Annalisa | 1659 comments Welcome to the Team Michael!
I love board games. My group of friends moved to virtual games in 2020. I’ve been discovering a lot of digital editions of the table top games we played. I have been really enjoying Terra Mystica and Lords of Waterdeep. Do you have any favorites?

message 32: by Faith (new)

Faith | 124 comments Being my fist year playing... What should we be doing between now and February 1st? As a team to we come up with who is going to read what for each hand? I think once we get started I won't be so nervous.

message 33: by Sunny (new)

Sunny (Jupiter's Solo Bibliophile) (bibliophilefromjupiter) | 33 comments Hey Faith, we will surely decide on who's having what card/hand. I think I should discuss this with Annalisa. Thank you Faith!

message 34: by Annalisa (last edited Jan 26, 2021 07:32AM) (new)

Annalisa | 1659 comments I don’t know about everyone else, but I’m a mood reader. It can be difficult for me to plan all my reads out. We do need to do some planning for our color cards, but often you may not know all the characters in a book until you start reading.

If as you are thinking about what you want to read in February you keep in mind the color cards that would be great. We have a lot of green cards. So if you see a book with a green cover (at least 50%. If you aren’t sure just post your edition here and we can help you decided) or yellow, red or blue see if it will work for one of our cards. If you find a book that works that you want to read let us know.

Green 2 - Shannon
Green 3
Green 7
Green 9 - Annalisa
Yellow 9
Red 2 - Annalisa
Red 9
Blue 6 - Nirmeen
Four Wild Draw Fours which duplicated a color cover

We also have 8 Reverse cards for the month. So if you see a book a team member has read that you really want to read let us know. I’ve found in the past the reverses aren’t to hard to fill.

Of course if you have any questions let us know. Also if you didn’t see already the first couple posts have helpful information. Captains and uno pixie have created shelves so that it is easier to find books with color covers.

Should we be choosing our books now? Or are we assigned a color? I'm a little confused if we go by color or number?

Annalisa | 1659 comments Ashley wrote: "Hello,

You do not need to be choosing all of the books you read for the month. I'd recommend you don't as we will probably have a mini challenge part way through the month. However, if when you are browsing books you come across a book with a Blue, Green, Red, or Yellow cover that you want to read, please check if it fits one of the color cards we have for the month.

I'm not going to assign colors. However, it would be great to have people claim the color cards. I've posted an example of a completion post in one of the early posts.

As an example we have a Green 3 this month. The cover of the book needs to be green and the book needs to work for a three as well. For this example you could read The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry (Harold Fry, #1) by Rachel Joyce The cover is over 50% green and it works for a 3 because there is a character named Harold Fry.

message 37: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1659 comments I’ll claim the green 9 took ma a while to find a book with a green cover that fit one of our cards. The Lost Sisterhood by Anne Fortier it has character NickBarren.

Nirmeen (nirmeena) | 37 comments https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...

Is this book suitable for green 2 card?

Annalisa | 1659 comments Nirmeen wrote: "https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...

Oh, how I dislike those teal covers. I think this one is less than 50% of the color which I think is more blue. If anyone else wants to weigh in please shout out.

But this color was exactly my problem with finding a green book. All the books I found were border of blue and green.

message 40: by Shay (new)

Shay Yeah, I see it as a little blue leaning, too. I was finding a lot of those teal/seafoam covers, too & wasn't sure about them.

I think Transcendent Kingdom should work for green 2 though, so I'll claim that one if no one minds

Both of those are high up on my wishlist right now. I’ve mostly been playing with my wife, and hope to find a group once the world returns to somewhat normal. My favorites right now are Gloomhaven and Orleans. Didn’t think I’d enjoy the latter too much, but got an awesome deal on it. Quickly became a favorite of both of ours!

Now sorry about the lag between posts. Had a very quick weekend and I’ll get up to speed and start planning out books this afternoon.

I haven’t played either Orleans or Gloomhaven. Gloomhaven is one we have on our list to try at some point. I’ll have to look at Orleans as I’ve not really heard anything about it.

Have you tried The Castles of Burgandy? It is my favorite for playing as a two player game. It is one of the few games I’ve played that plays just as well with two players as four players. Another game that I like for two players is Fields of Green. It also scales well.

I’m sure I’m really helping with your new board game fascination.

Thanks. For books that aren’t for a color card you don’t need to post what it works for until you finish the book.

For the setting, it needs to be set there for the full novel.
