Michael (michaelk19thcfan) | 142 comments The family and I watched this movie on Christmas Eve night via Amazon Prime. The 2017 movie is based on a book "The Man Who Invented Christmas". It is the story of how Charles Dickens saved his career as a novelist by writing "A Christmas Carol".

As with a Dickens novel, one experiences the whole range of emotions from joy to sadness. The movie goes into detail about the personal demons Dickens was still suffering from when his father went into debtors prison and Dickens was forced to work in a boot blackening factory at the age of 12. I said to myself "Good Gawd" when the adult Dickens sees a cart with the logo of the boot blackening factory he worked at. How this experienced resulted in a strained relationship with his father.

I enjoyed when Dickens would run into William Makepeace Thackeray at a gentleman's club and Mr. Thackeray would needle him about his career as a writer is going. Also, any Dickens fan would have a big smile on his face as Dickens would collect names from real people he met and use in his future works.

Dickens would have these great conversations with his alter-ego Scrooge played by Christopher Plummer.

The family and I enjoyed this very much and it is a wonderful alternative to say watching some of the other Christmas movies. I will give this four bonnets out of my scale of 1 to 5 bonnets.
