Have you always wanted to read a book, recommended, lots of hype, great reviews.

You are really excited.....

Then -

You read the book and it's rubbish....

Here is a list of books that people felt were not as good as expected...

David Freas (quillracer) | 557 comments I didn't find the Harry Potter books disappointing, which is unusual as they are far outside my normal taste.

In general, it has been my experience that books (and everything else) everyone raves about leave me cold.

Ishita | 23 comments I think a lot of times we get disappointed with hyped up books, even if they are actually not that bad, because our expectations are too high which leaves us dissatisfied.
I recently read a thriller The Silent Patient which has been given great reviews, but i ended up not feeling satisfied with it even though it had a great plot and ending.

Lots of awards and I just couldn’t figure out why. Here’s a link to my review. I’d love to hear other people’s thoughts.

Lots of books. I don't read the "favorite of the day" but so many books let me down with endings that I find dull. I read a book by an Ivory League English professor and it was terrible, and he's teaching students how to write?

I'm listening to "Rebecca" on audio and find myself screaming at the main character. Yes, I get it that it's a gothic thriller and was written seventy years ago, but I have a twenty-first century mentality and the wimpiness of the second Mrs. de Winter drives me crazy. I can only listen to it for 15 minutes at a time.

Marie It has happened to me a few times, but sometimes I try not to read the reviews and go in blind because that way I can make up my own mind about the book.

Barbara Lately I'm finding that how good a book is, how much I'm going to like it is in an inverse to how much hype it gets. I was very disappointed in the Dan Simmons Sherlock Holmes book, that book about the crawdads, The Boys in the Boat, the Megan Abbot ballet school book, the latest Jack Reacher books.

I actually listened to the audio book, and the reader was lovely. The accent probably made it even mor beautiful than it would have been had I read it on the page. I wasn't happy with the ending, but I forgave that for the journey.

Aditya | 1631 comments Blood Meridian, or the Evening Redness in the West by Cormac McCarthy,

Came highly recommended but hated it. A rare book I could not finish, lots of violence that did not advance plot or characters.
