SOLVED: Adult Fiction > SOLVED. Adult Dystopian. A failed floating city is still moored to the ground, poorest live on the lower levels & rich live on upper levels (ran out of money/ fuel to launch it?). Somewhat similar to Ballard's High Rise? Read around 2013. Spoiler. [s]

Ian McGeough | 8 comments Setting: A floating city which never took flight and is still moored to the ground, where the poorest live on the lower levels with the rich on the upper levels.

Story: Male protagonist is looking for something/someone (?) + concludes with he and some others passing though a portal into some kind of war in a jungle (?)

I read it c.2013 and afterwards read that Spielberg had bought the rights but he never made it.

Ian, what type of fuel is needed for the floating city and why did they run out of it?

Where is the floating city located?

Who's in charge? Type of government?

"In 1996 his second novel, Spares, was released, a novel in which the lead character, Jack, goes on the run with clones who are used for spare body parts for rich people, when he realises they are people with feelings. Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks purchased the film rights for Spares, but a film was never made." - I'm now 90% sure this is it! Gonna get a copy asap and confirm :-)
