I just finished the chapter 8 and -- omg, I have things to say.
First off, STURMHOND ! I kind of always like those cool-ish always taking risks 'pirates', they always do something you're not expecting and they're always great characters. Wasn't disappointed by him!
He's great, really. He's crazy lol I wasn't expecting them to go to the Fold and all the modern guns and flying ship and all. He's a genius!
When his charms removed and he said he didn't wanted the Darkling to recognize him "because last time he saw him he was 14", I KNEW he was a prince. I couldn't remember the 1st book about what happened to the King's sons or how many there were, but I knew he was one of them. That's getting interesting!
And wasn't expecting Alina to push him in the face but that made me laugh.

Talking about Alina, I actually am not liking her -yet-.
She hasn't aged, she hasn't changed even with all the weeks they've spent running. But then suddenly she's feeling greedy over her power and whan that firebird amplifier? Weird.
Mal has changed a bit, because a bit more mature, and I honestly hope he'd stay as a Sturmhond's crew soldier to avoid being punished for desertion. He seemed happy on that ship!
The Darkling has became even more powerful than he was before - was that even possible?? I'm curious about his new powers, even if we didn't saw much about it yet.

I'm wondering what will happen next.
Knowing that:
- 1st book has a stag design = 1st amplifier
- 2nd book has a dragon design = 2nd amplifier
- 3rd book has a phenix design = 3rd amplifier
I'm wondering if it'll just slow down now?
As they already got the Rusalye's scales for the 2nd amplifier, and already know about the firebird... Are we just going to get slow and all about Alina vs Darkling all over again until the next book ?? If so, that's gonna be a bit disappointing...

But maybe Mal's super tracking abilities is actually some sort of magic? It seems to be very intuitive for him to the point he can spot beasts in the dark fold and track a legendary ice sea ish dragon? Somehow I'm getting the vibe that Mal might not be that super "not grisha" like the Darkling wants to make Alina believe. At the same time I don't think he is light or dark... Maybe something else? I'm thinking back at the first scene where Alinas power were first discovered, maybe he also unlocked something too but also suppressed it or it's super intuitive? (He did kinda suppress his crush for all those years too, seems to be his character.) I mean, it's not impossible for unknown magic to exist because Alina is the proof of that. But I think I'm just overthinking this. But still when he helped Alina with the serpent I was kind of worried he also gained some connection to it. But I'm holding this case until further evidence supports or destroys the theory.
Anyways. I'm totally behind schedule for this series! I'm sorry to be late but also it was my choice, mostly because I don't want to force myself reading and I wasn't super excited after the end of the first book. I want to go into a book with positive vibes and a longing to know what happens.
So far I think this book is very promising tho! I had a HUGE grin on my face at the end of chapter 8 when she punched Stormhond in the face. Totally understandable! This is the escapism I crave because I would never be able to punch someone irl even if they deserved it lol.
On the topic of Alina, we sort of spend a lot of time in her head but at the same time I feel like her character is very vague. This I feel like is due to the style of the novel, we are meant to step into her shoes and focus on the story (and romance, which is why so many hot guys get introduced) not from her eyes but rather ours. But I don't dislike her. I think she is just by design meant to be vague. I just wish she weren't so indecisive.
Hm. I don't think I have anything more to mention. I think it's great so far. When the red book came back again and she didn't really read it but admired the illustrations... Yea. I'm assuming tho that there is more to the story about the saints that will be revealed later. I really just love world building I guess so I want to explore everything. I assume that the priest who gave her that either know of that truth or just wants to create another saint to make profit of (or he actually believes that she died and was resurrected, but it's also a bit iffy to spread around information like that).

I'm w..."
Great point! It all makes sense now, right?
I do really hope tho that this won't be a stalling middle book for the finale. Now that we know about the phoenix I want to see it, assuming that Stormhonds planes will enable them to hunt it. Kinda convenient but I'm feeling the destiny everything falls into place sort of vibe, and I love it hehe.
